My top 3 vacations were: 1. Telluride, CO 2. Siolim, Goa 3. Chail, Shimla Telluride, CO: We drove to Telluride from Phoenix first week of October. Ideally, this is not a journey you want to drive. It goes through the infamous highway 666 in the Navajo ntion. And as luck would have it, we ran into car trouble in the middle of the desert. The drive took us through Tuba - an interesting place with a lot of pre-historic sites, including a dinosaurs foot print. Our car trouble saw us stop over at Farmington. Farmington on a Saturday evening is rather dead. We had dinner at the RiverWalk (Best Western), a fairly good place. The next day we drove through Colorado country. This is a beautiful part of the United States. That we were driving through ... read more

Distance: 6.5 miles Rating: Moderate I get a real kick out of the winter people who complain about Colorado’s Indian summer. Most of these people are agitating over the fact that the ski season hasn’t begun yet, which is something I couldn’t care less about. Ever since I became an avid hiker, I’ve come to love the summer and despise the winter. As you might guess, that means I’m not much of a skier. With temperatures still hitting the high 60’s, I took the opportunity to head south to the Pikes Peak area. My destination was Mueller State Park, which occupies over five thousand acres of forested foothills west of the Pikes Peak Massif. The park sits at the southeastern side of the South Park valley and the Pike National Forest. Pikes Peak dominates the view ... read more

We’ve been on three overnight train trips since we last sent you a blog and traveled from DC to the US west coast, just inland from Oceanside near San Diego. Our Amtrak experience was great. Each section of the trip differed in clientele, staff and scenery - but on each the service was good! On the DC to Chicago leg, we saw much of the Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania countryside that we already knew. From Chicago to Denver we crossed the Mississippi during daylight and saw lots and lots of flat plains, corn and wheat fields. The last leg from Colorado to LA was the most scenic as we moved through high plateau’s and gorges surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides. The two days in Chicago gave us a chance to wander along the ... read more

After a couple of days of relaxing at Tony & Diana’s where I didn’t nothing but watch TV and movies Seaver and I were determined to try Grey’s and Torrey’s peaks again. This time we left two hours later and had much better snow gear. On the drive up Seaver said that the weather said it might have snowed up there the night before so we were ready for more snow. However, there was no snow and the peaks could easily be seen from the trailhead. At the point where we originally turned around most of the snow had melted in the past two days and there was maybe 3-4 inches in the deepest spots. The lack of snow didn’t make it easier however. Once we reached the spot we had turned around at before ... read more

10-5-07 I slept pretty good and got up to use their wifi for awhile before leaving. Mr Coole is a computer science guy, but is working on bikes currently. I think that is cool that he is doing something that he really enjoys. Not many people can say that. Good for him. He was actually leaving as well and I offered to take him to the bus station which he agreed to but then after researching things a little more realized it really was not much advantage to do that so he was just going to lock his bike up and have his wife pick it up. I finally left about 10:00 AM and was off to try and find some horses. I went to the BLM building and talked to the lady there for awhile. ... read more

On Tuesday, the 2nd, Seaver and I had the bright idea to hike Grey’s and Torrey’s peaks about 50 miles west of Denver. Once off of I-70 the road immediately turned rugged and we could see snow on the peaks. I didn’t realize it would be as cold as it was. Along the three mile 4x4 only road flecks of snow drifted across the hood of Seaver’s Tacoma. Once at the trailhead the wind was blowing a bit, but we were determined to attempt the summit despite gnawing fears of doubt at the cold and wind. I had a long sleeve shirt, a fleece, a jacket, and a beanie on. Seaver had about the same but he was smart enough to bring gloves. The trailhead was at about 12,000 feet and I could feel it pretty ... read more

070928 Denver, CO After Boise I headed to base dropped off some stuff then drove straight through to Denver. Seaver was at a place called the Ginn Mill. It was a long twelve hour drive and I should have driven faster because apparently the grand opening of the Ginn Mill had free beer until 10 and I showed up just after that! I stayed at Seaver’s parents’ who had an extra room and were really nice. The next day we met up with Neil, yet another co-worker, and headed to Stanley Lake to go wake boarding with some of Seavers friend, Gino and Tom. Bridgette met us at the lake after first showing up on the wrong side then eventually finding us just as we were about to get on the water. Bridgette was…yup, you guessed ... read more
