Distance: 6 miles Difficulty: easy With temperatures in the high 60’s, I couldn’t resist getting out for my first hike of the year. I generally consider myself lucky if I can get in one or two hikes in March, as the weather tends to be pretty temperamental this time of the year. This was actually the earliest hike that I’ve done in the four years since I became an avid hiker. Not surprisingly, there was still a good amount of snow on the ground in some places and the trails were quite muddy. The mountains were still getting hit with record snow fall, so I knew I’d have to stay along the foothills. The weather got ugly again the next day, so I’m glad I got to stretch my legs when I did. Well, if you want to keep me occupied in the airport, feed me gin and tonics.... great way to kill a couple of hours. Of course, after 4 you kind of have to sober up before you can present yourself at the gate. Well, this prima donna decided to NOT take the earlier flight back home tonight (could have flown standby) because it would have meant giving up his exit row aisle seat in exchange for a middle seat. So, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a few hours in my favorite pub of the week... the airport bar on the upper level of the A Concourse in Denver. You know you travel too much when: 1. The bartenders at the airport bars recognize you and know what you drink. 2. You give directions to ... read more

This is simply a little diddy to get me started. Hopefully throughout my travels throughout Europe during the coming summer I will find ample time to reflect on the emotions, sights, sounds and so fourth. Sit down and share some amusing antidotes with my family and friends. Since I've yet to begin this trip I can only start with my preparations, Check list checked, bag pack( three months early), documentation and passes bought. I guess I'm a bit anxious for this trip. I have always felt this certain need to get out and experience a different culture, I imagined myself up and leaving one day, barely saying goodbye to those close to me and starting an adventure, my own fresh start, not that I dislike anyone around me, in fact the only times I have been ... read more

It's been five months since we returned from our two-year-long, 15-country adventure. Within days of our return, reverse culture shock quickly ceded to the bliss of hot showers, comfortable beds, home cooking, and washing machines. After 23 months of laundering clothes by hand in freezing water followed by mosquito-ridden nights on bug-infested beds, America seems truly luxurious. We've been taking advantage of our respective parents' hospitality, staying first with Randy's mom in northern California, and then with Jenny's folks in southwestern Colorado. Spending two years around the Equator didn't exactly prepare us for winter—but getting in some much-anticipated time on the slopes is well worth the chilly hands. Hello to all of you, The past year has been so incredible and we have finally settled into our new home. We are living in Denver, now. The city is great and so is the weather. We also are very lucky to have a whole crew of friends and family here (although, we would love to see more of you out here). Our place is small, but nice. Uncle Fred and my dad worked so hard to help us move. They drove all away out here with all of our crap and then helped us to actually move in. We really owe them so much. Thanks you guys! Sean is working again as a nanny and I am still looking for work. In the meantime, I can assure you all that I am the model housewife. ... read more

It may be approaching the end of January, but I'm still trying to capture Christmas on this blog. Here goes... As I mentioned in my last entry, I was heading to Denver, Colorado to visit family for the holidays. A series of flights (3) from Bangkok to Denver found me at my destination on the night of December 22, 2007. The flights were basically uneventful, and thankfully, not full. I had plenty of room to stretch out. Upon arrival in Denver, however, I quickly found myself with yet another cold. Those have been coming often recently, what with all the public transportation I've been using and the amount of students coming through my classroom (about 350!). However, it didn't dampen my trip much. We went out for my birthday dinner with the adults (mom, dad, sister, ... read more

It had been a long week at work and I was very much looking forward to a break. One of the first signs I saw at the airport was "Aspen welcomes your mind, body and spirit." Amen. This was my first "traditional" vacation.... I don't count the time off between my first two jobs. This one I actually used "vacation" time to go to some spellbinding locale and knock around for awhile It took two connections (Chicago and Denver) to reach Aspen on Friday, January 18th. It was night when I flew in. The descent towards the airport was rapid... their was one particular drop where I could feel the bottom falling out... also, on approach I watched the mountains in the distance... and as we descended and moved closer the airport, much closer snow covered ... read more

Obfuscator writes: J had a couple of days off work, and we figured that since we were in Denver anyway, we should check off another state capitol. We found parking right across the street, and went on in. After a couple of capitols where we didn't have to go through security, it was annoying to have to do so again, but I guess that's what you get when you get back into states with actual populations. The capitol is fairly standard looking on the outside, more or less resembling the nation's capitol. Apparently it's the third highest capitol in the country, being at a lower elevation than only Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. On the inside, it's really pretty. Apparently they did their best to use all materials from within Colorado, and there's some ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left our cozy motel in Gothenburg and set out to see the Pony Express station in the town. Of course, we probably should have anticipated it, but it was closed for the season. It was interesting, of course, to see an original Pony Express station, but the tiny structure was in most respects, quite unremarkable. The Gothenburg museum was across the street, so we went to check that out. Unfortunately, during the winter it's only open on Saturdays, or by appointment, neither of which we had to spare. Not seeing much else of interest in Gothenburg, we hit the road again. We took I-80 as far as North Platte, where we exited to see the Buffalo Bill Ranch. Once again, winter struck.
