Ah, my first real journal entry. I'm not sure how good I'll be at recapping everything I've been up to (or how interesting it'll be to anyone other than myself and my mother) so I'll try to keep this blog updated and succinct. As those of you who ran into me online or on a random street corner over the last few days know, Iwas supposed to deploy to The Ice a few weeks ago but got held back due to medical clearance miscommunications. Long story short, my dentist gave me copies of my x-rays instead of originals and even though I have duplicate originals made and overnight mailed them to Denver, they werent processed in time and thus I was bumped by a week and a half. It was a great week because I got ... read more

Distance: 6.5 miles Rating: Moderate When I told a co-worker about this hike, he remarked about my unusual ability to find trails in the most unlikely places. Indeed, one probably wouldn’t expect there to be much in the way of good hiking as far east as the area encompassed by Castlewood Canyon State Park. The canyon is hidden in the heart of the forested hills east of Castle Rock and south of the small community of Franktown. Only about 35 miles south of the Denver area—and therefore experiencing nearly the same weather conditions—the park is great for a late season hike. With the Indian summer still going strong, I couldn’t resist a chance to head out for what I assumed would be my final hike of the year. As it turned out, this would prove to ... read more

Finally back on the road again almost a year to the date since my last entry. After 2 weeks in North Carolina we skipped thru rainy Arkansas and Oklahoma to get some time in the mountains before it gets to cold and snowy. Echo, who has been my "latch key dog" for most of the last year is as happy as I am to be traveling again. The Colorado mountains with the first snow of the season are unbelievable. The trade off is some very cold nights in the teens. I'll spend another week or two in Colorado then head into Utah and all the canyons. I'll be back next month sometime. ... read more

We made it to Gunnison, CO to visit our boy Marty at Western State. Its been a fun weekend. Felt good to cut loose be back in a college atmosphere. The ride here was amazing, as always. We went over Lizard Head Pass right around 10, 500 ft. There was a ton of snow but the roads were dry. We are 1500 some odd miles deep and we're starting to move a lot faster. On monday we head out for Monarch Pass at 11, 300 ft, the highest elevation that we have to cross on the trip. After that its pretty much easy riding through november rain and cornfields of Kansas until we hit the applachians. We plan on powerhousing through the plains but you never know what your up against. I think when we hit ... read more

Colorado We arrived at Joyce and Russell’s house after a long 4 days on the road. We travelled from Disney in Orlando to Dawson in Georgia, then to Brinkley in Arkansas (after visiting Graceland and Helen Keller’s house in Tennessee). We drove down a section of the old route 66 and had a coffee, peach cobbler and coke floats at the Rock Café in Stroud. This café has been operating since late 1920’s and it had a real American feel to it. We drove a bit further along and saw the old historic Red Barn. We had dinner in Oklahoma City in a lovely restaurant called the Elephant Safari Bar and it was the first non-fried food we had in days. We drove a little further and spent that night in Watonga. As we were parking ... read more

Moose Enjoyed Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado. Lovely campsite with fun visit to petroglyph sites. Just got ahead of the snow to arrive in Longmont Colorado on 10/20/07. Now resting and relaxing in Longmont Colorado. Thanks to the sponsorship of Joe, Diana, and Zoe for our Longmont leg of the trip. Relaxation, good food, good rest, and titillating conversation with our friends has been a beautiful thing. Colorado is beautiful. Went to a mall in Boulder yesterday and have gone to the movies as well. Hey, nobody said we had to be roughing it every day. And the ... read more

Another early start today, we got ready and packed the trailer to head off. Drove most of the day and arrived in Mesa Verde National Park late in the afternoon, None of us knew what to expect in this National Park, we’d never heard of it before. We walked along the trail down a hill until we reached a lookout point. From here we could see a large valley and in the valley walls a small city made out of stone had been built into the cliff. It didn’t look real from the view up on the lookout point it was a spectacular sight. We waited here until the tour guide came, we had just made it for the last tour of the day. She took us down ladders to the stone city and we sat ... read more
