Geo: 38.8702, -106.986Wow. I am no longer convinced that Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. After wandering around town a bit last night, I drove out to sus out a camping spot in nearby National Forest land. Just a couple miles in, the road was all but blocked by a snow bank. Rather than risk getting stuck or sliding into a ditch, I decided to backtrack. However, the road was hardly wider than my truck, and I was forced to reverse a good half mile before reaching a place to turn around.Came back to town to check out some of the local watering holes and hunt down some music I had heard about earlier. Made instant friends at the Wooden Nickel. Round 10:30, I hopped across the street to the Eldo Brewpub. It didn't take too ... read more

Geo: 38.8702, -106.986I've had a few friends tell me in the past that if I ever went to Crested Butte I might never leave.Well, I got into town about 20 minutes ago.......and I might not leave. :)After some finnicky wireless in Hotchkiss and a pleasant cruise along the rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, I found myself having some tasty beers and honey-chili sweet potato fries at the Gunnison Brewery. Gunnison, the ice box of Colorado. Perhaps of the nation! Any time in the winter while watching the weather channel (how was that for some alliteration?), I always shudder and offer up a prayer and solace for the people of Gunnison. However, lovely summers close to abundant hiking, fishing, boating, and camping. As long as your skin is made of down-filled Goretex.Driving north from ... read more

Well good morning Montrose, Colorado !! It's bright and early and Tim is chomping at the bits to get on the road. He's always like this when we have one of those days that consist of mostly driving and a little sightseeing. We were up and ready to pull out of Wally World by 9:00 am. He found a place called The Black Canyon of the Gunnison in the book so he plotted out our route and off we went to check it out. It's actually part of the National Park Service and we were able to use our yearly pass to get in so Tim whipped it out and the nice lady let us through the gates. We followed all the signs and made our way through the park watching for wildlife along the way. ... read more

Colorful flowers blaze in a bright morning sun while hummingbirds flit around the deck as we enjoy a breakfast of Southwestern eggs benedict at Leroux Creek Inn. It’s hard to tear away from the beautiful scene to start the drive to Ouray, Colorado and the next part of our adventure. Since we have all day to make the short drive, Alan and I explore the portion of West Elk Loop that travels from Somerset to Crested Butte before rejoining the highway that continues through Gunnison, Montrose and eventually Ouray. First, the journey takes us beside the organic farms in Hotchkiss and then Paonia. Before Somerset, the road begins to climb, winding through Colorado mining country. When the West Elk Loop turns toward Crested Butte, it leaves the pavement, becoming a wide dirt road that is easily ... read more

We made it to Gunnison, CO to visit our boy Marty at Western State. Its been a fun weekend. Felt good to cut loose be back in a college atmosphere. The ride here was amazing, as always. We went over Lizard Head Pass right around 10, 500 ft. There was a ton of snow but the roads were dry. We are 1500 some odd miles deep and we're starting to move a lot faster. On monday we head out for Monarch Pass at 11, 300 ft, the highest elevation that we have to cross on the trip. After that its pretty much easy riding through november rain and cornfields of Kansas until we hit the applachians. We plan on powerhousing through the plains but you never know what your up against. I think when we hit ... read more

Hi Everyone, So my friend Matty convinced me to set up a travel blog, instead of sending out mass emails -we'll see how this works... I'm still stateside, a little less than 36 hours until I board the plane here in Colorado -and no, I'm not nervous. I know some of you find that hard to believe :) I have been wanting to go to Africa for years now. It has been my dream to visit the continent (CONTINENT, not a country Matt) since I became aware of the world outside my immediate surroundings. That said, you can understand why I have nothing but sheer excitment pulsing through my veins! I know I sent out my schedule in an email, but I'm going to post it again, for good measure (and some of you are newly ... read more

Well...Home again, home again. I miss Spain alot, but I do love Colorado in the winter time!!! During the week of March 22-26, my ski buddy, Skylar, and I took the trip to Crested Butte for the U.S. Telemark Big Mountain Extreme Championships. The conditions were rocky and icy, "Boney" as one guy put it. So, for my first competition I didn't do so bad...but I didn't do so well either. I plan to get into shape this summer, ski hard next fall and go back next year with more power. Not skiiing all fall and drinking lots of Spanish wine certainly didn't help my perfomance in the competition (but...it was worth it). Skylar, on the other hand, made it to the second day. However, even though he had a really good line that day (down ... read more

Hey everyone, it's a laundry day, which also means it's time to say hello from Crested Butte. Here's the latest. So last I wrote Dave and I were in Durango, getting a little restless. The weather was beautiful, but a lot of the roads were still closed. I found out on Wed of that week that Silverton was without power, and all roads into the town were closed, and the website had big bold red lettering telling people that anyone with a reservation for Thurs and Fri would have to cancel and get a refund. So no Silverton for Dave and I, of course the people at the mountain swore up and down that this NEVER happens, and that they hadn't seen this much snow in 15 years. So instead of making the trip to Silverton ... read more
