Laura is back on the journal today. We woke up and the water faucet for the campsite was frozen solid. Cold, cold, cold! I am in 4 layers up top and 2 layers on the bottom + a wool hat and gloves. People are huddled over their fires and mugs of coffee this morning. We're huddling over our oatmeal. During breakfast we saw 5 mule deer wander along the river by our campsite. They didn't hear us and we were able to watch them awhile. We also saw a Stellar's Jay - a puffy black and blue bird - whose feathers were shiny and very pretty when it opened its wings.Drive to Yosemite ValleyThe drive from the meadows to the valley is a little over an hour long and takes us through a lot of the ... read more

Groveland and Yosemite 22nd September 2008 Groveland is an old gold mining town, twenty three miles east of the Yosemite National Park in the Stanislaus Forest. It is one of the old “Forty Niner’s towns” with most of the original buildings intact, including the saloon and hotels still used as such. We got here three nights ago and are staying another three, camping. It is absolutely freezing at night, not surprising at this altitude in the mountains, but we are cosy enough in our rented tent and the surrounding pinewoods are beautiful. The first two nights were noisy, the little town had its annual “49ers Festival” (some pretty good live music) so last night we slept like logs to make up for it! Yesterday was our first visit to Yosemite itself and, like most tourists, we ... read more

Bit of a sleep in this morning. This place is very relaxing - we even had a family of deer eating outside our room this morning to provide entertainment. Decided to rent some bikes and explore the valley this way. Not cheap at $25 per bike for the day, but we thought afterwards that it was well worth it. We headed up the valley to check out the Curry Village (tent cabins which I’m glad we’re not staying in) and up to Mirror Lake (what lake? - there’s not a drop of water to be seen). Spent a couple of hours walking up one side of the dry riverbead and back - but didn’t seen any bears unfortunately. Had a picnic lunch when we did find some flowing water, but the mosquito’s were so annoying we ... read more

Up very early this morning to pick up our rental car from Dollar. I’d walked past the other day and noticed about 20 people all queued down the street waiting for their car and we hoped that by arriving early we’d beat the rush. Turns out it was the best thing to do as we walked straight up to the counter and had no waiting at all. I’d been stressing out a bit before the trip as we had no control over what car we would be allocated. For all our luck we’d end up with a Mercury Grand Marquis (a real nana’s car). But no, lady luck was on our side and we got exactly the car we were hoping for, a Chrysler Pacifica - a mean as black one!!!! Made the trip back to ... read more

After a few hours sleep it was time to again jump in the trusty Chevy Imparla, leave the bright lights of Vegas behind and hit the road for Yosemite National Park. This took about 8 hours again in 40 plus temperatures and through some very dodgy looking towns with more abandoned trailers (or caravans as we call them) then we could count. The drive was actually pretty nice taking us through some nice mountain ranges. The last couple of hours we started to approach the Sierra Nevada's and entered the park from the east via Tioga Pass. This drive was fantastic and i had to really concentrate on the road so as not to drive off the 100m plus drop, but it was hard given the amazing scenery. We arrived at our camp around 9pm and ... read more

Monday 25th August Got up early and packed up, just had time for coffee, an essential element to the road trip first thing in the morning!! Then it was a windy drive down to Wawona where we found a very nice 9 hole golf course, and a beautiful hotel - obviously where the rich people stay when visiting Yosemite!! Golf was great, it was a beautiful day and the scenery was stunning. The golf went well - Gra coaching me all the way and having quite a few decent shots himself. We had both peaked at the 9th hole and wound up in the club house having lunch and checking out the best route back to Vegas. We didn't fancy another visit to Death Valley so took a longer way round back through a town called ... read more

Sunday 24th August After a good 11 hours of sleep we were ready to tackle some more hikes. This time we headed to the top of the mountain and walked to Taft Point for some spectacular views of the valley floor and where we had explored the day before. It was fun looking down, but we were both grateful for the metal railing put in to aid the view. We then hiked along the mountain edge to Glacier Point. This time we had a view of; Half Dome, North Dome, Basket Dome and much more. It was a tremendous view and after 4 hours of walking we enjoyed an ice cream and a break in the coffee shop. Then it was a push for the last view of the day and certainly the best. We climbed ... read more

Saturday 23rd August We woke up to sun steaming through the tent and the sounds of lots of people getting ready to go out hiking. We had planned to go on a hike and bike tour of the valley floor to get ourselves familiar with our surroundings. So having hired very basic tour bikes, we joined the group and Star, our tour guide. She described the area, the history, the geology, and facts about Yosemite very well and we were pleasantly surprised and glad we had taken the tour. We decided to keep the bikes for the day and use them to get to the start of several other walks. The first one we tried was a loop around mirror lake. Unfortunately it was almost dry and there was no mirror image of the mountains just ... read more

Friday 22nd August We slept in for once and left the hotel ready to gym it for a second time in South San Fran , however we weren't so lucky this time as both gyms we tried we charge day pass rates and $15 dollars each for a run seemed a little too much! So we headed to the beach instead determined to crack the surfing thing!! We hired (sorry RENTED!!) boards and this time essential wet suits. As the fog was still hanging over San Fran at 2pm in the afternoon it seemed surfing was the only thing to do at the beach. However the ocean seemed a little bit rough and we were soon feeling like we had done a fast spin in a washing cycle and neither of us had much success in ... read more
