Touring the Town Today's travels do not have too much to report, for we really did not travel any. The kids and I mostly hung out around the hotel and the downtown district. We tried a different bakery this morning and spotted some awesome looking desserts for later in the day. After breakfast we went to the lobby for some internet time while waiting for some of the businesses to open. Most places do not open until 10 or 11 around here, which is just against my internal clock. Around 10 we headed to the Tech Museum. It is a hands on technology museum, but mostly geared towards elementary students. We looked at all the exhibits, interacting with a few of them. We were again surrounded by students on a last-week-of-school field trip, so that took ... read more

Goodbye Yosemite, Hello San Jose Today we said goodbye to Yosemite. Yosemite was great but crowded with people. There were cars at every pullout, walkers and bicyclists all through the valley and huge buses giving tours everywhere we went. It was hard to find the quieter places, but we did it. No mountain lion was ever found. We did learn today that the emergency we saw the responders for yesterday was a climber that was fatally hit by a rock while climbing the mountain. We also heard of a hiker who was washed over one of the waterfalls on Saturday, but he has not been located. It is beautiful in this park but dangers are also very present. We were up fairly early, packed, ate our continental breakfast we purchased last night and were on our ... read more

My cab driver obviously didn’t. He chucks me a satnav and asks me to input the address for him. When I arrive, he even asks me to fill out the receipt myself. So this is a self-service cab is it? His cab (and him) reeked too. So like Will Smith said, “smell ya later!” No dice in the mirror though. I had arrived in San Jose to undergo three days of training, a “perk” of my work. Googling for things to see and do while here, there didn’t seem to be a lot – I hoped to be proved wrong. The roads are really wide here which is consistent with the city profile; San Jose is the tenth biggest city in the US, but walking around downtown you wouldn’t know it. It’s pretty dead and there ... read more

As I promised, here's a little more about the Palo Alto, the cement tanker commissioned during WWI during the steel shortage, which was completed too late to enter the war. Seeing as how it lacked a purpose in peacetime, it was sold to an entertainment company, which beached it along the California coast and turned it into a resort. During its glory days, the Palo Alto featured a boardwalk, a fine restaurant, and a dance hall. Unfortunately, the gaiety was short-lived; the Great Depression squished any chance the resort had at profitability. It was sold to the state and turned into an extension of the wooden fishing pier. Now it is too dangerous to go out on and has become a habitat for wildlife. We woke to the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline. ... read more

So we have completed our last full day here on the West Coast and it's been another lovely warm day. We headed for another hearty breakfast this morning and then made our way to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for 10:30. After our first visit there at the beginning of the holiday in the rain and the fainting incident with Luke our nerves were a little on edge. However there was no need to worry the sun shone, Luke didn't attempt any rides that involved spinning around or falling from a great height and he had eaten plenty along the way. After watching the dolphin and killer whale show we spent the rest of the time exploring the rides. Mia was the bravest of us all going on Medusa twice (this involved a series of loops and ... read more

Silicon Valley For those who like technology, Silicon Valley is a place of myth, the modern equivalent of the western Sierra in 1849. This cluster of cities between Palo Alto and San Jose has an amazing concentration of incredibly smart engineers, along with adventurous investors. Their constant interactions and competition create ideas, products, and companies that revolutionize how people use computers, the internet, and modern life. People here create things that change the world. Local boosters like to claim that this environment only exists in this one small area. In reality, it also exists in other parts of the country (Boston MA, Seattle WA, Austin TX) but no... read more

This was a bank holiday weekend in California - Cesar Chavez, a farm worker turned labor leader and civil rights activist who achieved nationwide support for the farm workers movement. California is one of the states to celebrate his birthday with a bank holiday, government and state institutions choosing to celebrate the nearest Friday to his birthday, this year 25 March. I am in agreement with this, I was born on a Friday and therefore think my birthday should always be on a Friday. Friday's child is loving and giving, a much better motto to carry through life than the one Jess's Wii gave me - telling me in no uncertain terms that I am overweight and unstable. We chose to celebrate Cesar's birthday with a trip to the coast, taking in Santa Cruz and San ... read more

I finally got off the Greyhound in California making the long trek from the East Coast to the West Coast while meandering through the South, parts of the Midwest, Southwest and the Colorado Rockies. My Western leg included a ride through Arizona, Nevada and California from the Southern region all the way up to San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley where I got off. After arriving at the downtown San Jose bus terminal at 6am on Sunday morning, there was a remarkable shift in lifestyle as I moved from a seat in a Greyhound bus to a seat in a nearby Starbucks. This was followed by a seat in my aunt Michelle's sporty red convertible with which she picked me up from Starbucks and took me to her beautifully remodeled home. The beauty and ... read more
