Our 15 seconds of Fame Anyone who's been following Dudley Dawson's Worlds' Worst Cubicle Contest in the San Francisco Examiner (or read my previous blog on this subject) knows that we submitted two entries (#22 and #23) and that #22 was in the lead. I got the news that we WON the contest (was there any doubt?) and we've been awarded a gift card. If you want to see all the entries and results, go to: http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-3040-Life-in-the-Cubicle-Examiner~y2009m8d30-Connie-Finch-wins-the-2009-Worst-Cubicle-in-the-World-award (copy and paste into any browser). You'll die laughing! But that's not the end of the story! When Dudley asked me what I was going to do with the winnings, I mentioned my charity work and that I would be buying toys for the orphanages in Romania, Moldova and The Republic of Georgia. He asked me more questions and ... read more

After experiencing the Winter (including snow!) in New Zealand it was time to seek out some sunshine in sunny California! We left Auckland and after flying over the date line arrived in San Jose before we had taken off much to my confusion! We were staying with my brother Rob, his wife Jen and my nephew Daniel for a week and really looking forward to some home comforts. It was so nice to be in a house for a while and we took the opportunity to relax in the mornings, in the afternoons and in the evenings too! San Jose has a lovely climate and it was time to reach for the shorts again something we hadn´t done for months. We managed to get out and see some of the area including a lovely trip to ... read more

June 3rd 2009 Fond farewells What a couple of weeks! It is unbelievable that everything went so swimmingly and to plan. Thanks to everyone for all my send-offs, and for taking all the leftovers from Saturday's BBQ!! Portion-size clearly isn't my speciality. After a lovely, mad dash to Edinburgh on Sunday, I finally finished packing, tidied the house and at long last hopped on the plane to San Francisco on Monday afternoon. The 11-hour flight was unremarkable - certainly not the epic 24-hour voyage to Sydney I made in January! Sat next to a tall, strapping Irish man, I was, however, reminded of the joys of being petite. The poor guy just couldn't get comfortable. Me? I slipped into my pyjamas, put on the headphones and caught up on a few movies. There are much worse ... read more

Before returning to India, we made a stop in Northern California where most of my direct family lives. We visited my mother Margaret for a few days in San Jose where she lives with her roommate Debbie. My sister Peggy also lives in San Jose with her boyfriend Ray and her son’s Frank and Joe. Peggy gave a Saint Patrick’s Day party to celebrate our visit and she invited our family and many friends from childhood. My sister Jenny showed up with her husband Dave and her son Keagan. My father Dave showed up with his wife Jan and his grand-daughter Torrie. Friends from my childhood that stopped by included Tony, Tracy, Laura, Debbie and Sean, among others. My mom, Jenny, Kim and I drove up to San Francisco for the day to go sight seeing. ... read more

Hi all, arrived in San Fran safe and well. Didnt manage to sleep at all on the 10hr flight, mostly thanks to the screaming child behind me! Sights from the plane were amazing, we saw Greenland and most remote parts of Canada which were out of this world! Last night we went to a Burito bar and shockingly had a Burito which was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen, it was about the size of a large rolling pin, very nice though. We've been out for pancakes this morning and we're off to Santa Cruz for the day very soon. Hopefully going to see some mountain lions or bears in an ancient redwood forest. Off to San Fran and tomorrow after we've been to Napa Valley to taste some fine wines. Can't wait to get ... read more

After graduation I worked for 2 years as an engineer for the insurance company and in an unexpected turn of events I was helping out a neighbor with her insurance claim and remembered how much I loved the challenge of working insurance claims. Shortly after that I transfered from Engineering to Claims within the insurance company and began two years of working the most amazing claims ever. I cut my teeth on $100k claims. And worked my way up from there. I worked a fire in San Francisco. I worked a pier collapse in San Rafael, CA. I worked an arson fire in Porterville, CA. I worked a building collapse in Denver CO and Littleton, CO. I worked a contamination claim in Santa Clara, CA. I worked with another adjuster on a claim in a molybdenum ... read more

In January of 2008, a strong windstorm hit Northern California and parts of Nevada. It was the first time I have worked from home. It was a fun experience and wonderful to be able to walk into the next room to work. I haven't been able to do that since 2002. Which was the last time I worked from home! The claims from this storm were unique in that they mostly consisted of condo associations with large amounts of buildings in each association. I have never seen the kind of wind damage outside of a tornado or hurricane. It was amazing to see that amount of damage in California! This storm had me traveling up to the very northern coast of California, into the huge Redwood forests near the Oregon border, all the way over the ... read more

In May 2006 when I finally left Louisiana I decided to take it easy heading home and stopped to see the sights. The first time I had ever done that. I stopped in San Angleo to visit my ex-father in law. I stopped in the Painted Desert at sunset. I stopped for 2 days in the Grand Canyon, decended to the depths in the Grand Canyon Caverns, drove across Hoover Dam and stayed in Las Vegas (my first trip) for 2 nights. Then a quick trip through Death Valley and a run around the bottom of the Sierra Nevada mountains and a quick dash up Interstate 5 to get home in time to drop the cat off and fly back to Southern California to see a friend graduate after nearly 8 years of going to night ... read more
