After meeting my cousin Paul in Sydney, we set about meeting the only remaining member of the family I hadn´t yet met. Paul´s son Jason is an ex Olympic 100m runner, and lives in San Jose working as a sports and fitness training professional. Sadly we didn´t have any contact with Paul or Jason over the last few years - these were the times that Jason was actually in the UK and Europe running for Australia and it would have been great to have met him back then. Jason´s career was cut short by injury, and he now lives with his fiance in San Jose and they are planning their wedding for the Summer. We had a great day/night together all of us - touring San Jose, visiting the new shopping malls and meeting Kari´s family. ... read more

A LOT OF MILES A LOT OF SIGHTS... It's February the 17th as I write this. Not sure when we'll get the internet next so will put this up as soon as possible. Ive tried to do a route map as good as possible from memory as well... I havent yet put photos up, there are a lot of them so it may take a while - even though my flash is broken on my camera so I cant take photos at night... We've been extremely busy since we've left Vancouver - days packed with stuff - this is going to be a big post I think! We realised we had spent too much time up north so decided to try and get as much as possible done in the remaining 3 weeks we have the ... read more

Well, I am beginning to think that I am the "bad luck" that is following me on my recent trips and as most of you know, I generally don't like to think that I am anything but a blessing to those lucky enough to be around me. This trip started with us sitting in a plane for two and a half hours just trying to get off the ground in Salt Lake City. You know it's bad when you have to try that hard just to go to work! We have basically been behind ever since. Our schedulers pulled us off that plane when it went back to get deiced and fueled for a second time......I had worn a dress for the first time since I started this job. NOT a good choice...I had figured since ... read more

I have a lot of catching up to do. Here goes with September's Mid Autumn Moon Festival: This Chinese holiday falls upon the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar throughout most of Asia with huge celebrations of the bountiful harvest brought by the monsoon rains. The moon is shines brilliantly at this time, with special mooncakes eaten by all. There is a famous Chinese folk tale about a Chinese Princess that accidentally floated to the moon from earth though the details of the story escapes me. One of my earliest childhood memories of Vietnam was celebrating this very popular Chinese holiday with family and neighborhood friends. I would compare it to Halloween without the costumes. Children would get their own lantern (usually made of colorful durable plastic) in the shape of ... read more

On Christmas Eve were asked by dad to stop by his work in Gilroy just before we went to the house for Christmas dinner. A little voice in the back of my head knew what he had in mind. A few days before Christmas eve, a 2-engine plane had crashed into the water treatment tank in Gilroy. There were three Japanese nationals on board. Naively I thought they somehow survived the crash until the news regretfully informed that there were no survivors. It was just too close to Christmas for me to believe they had all perished. When we arrived the first thing that I noticied that I had never seen were flowers left beside the gate in memory of the three Japanese citizens who met their fate on that day. I never once heard from ... read more

Wow, lesson learned. Hit save before trying to load a picture.... I was told this is a great site for travel blogging. We'll have to see about that. Check list: Pack bag- check Brazilian visa- check shots- check bikinis- check plane tickets- check hotel reservations for first night- check a laid back travel attitude- in progress I think I'm almost ready to go..... Now I'll post a test picture, but will save it this time first... 4 minutes later- tada! Looks like it worked! So proud of self! ... read more

Well, 101 days later, I've returned from Europe. I must say, the past 3 months have been amazing but it is great to be home. Let's just recap the end of Oxford and the journey home... Friday morning, after I said the difficult goodbyes to Liz and Cate, I ran some errands around town to get my mind off leaving. I grabbed some lunch, some coffee, and finished reading my library book. Afterwards, I returned the books to the library and headed back to St Michael's Hall to begin the packing adventure. Packing didn't take as long as I thought it would. It was actually surprisingly easy. I managed to fit almost all of my clothing in my smaller red suitcase and then I put all of the souvenirs and random "stuff" I had in the ... read more

I travel to San Jose (California not Puerto Rico) at least once a month on business. When I can, I go to Moonbeans Coffee on Santa Teresa Blvd before going into work. Moonbeans has the essentials of a place for my travels: (1) good coffee (2) served in a ceramic cup (3) free wireless internet access (4) no uniforms on the people who serve you I love going to Moonbeans. It is evident that a lot of local people like the place as well as there is usually a good crowd every time I visit. There is nothing noteworthy about the outside appearance of the place. It is just another business in a strip shopping center. On the inside, however, things are different. Moonbeans has chairs, tables, couches, a kids play area, and a coffee roaster. ... read more
