Gaga for Gaga When I told Grace that I'd buy her two performing arts tickets for her birthday, I thought I'd end up at an opera, play or dance. What I ended up getting was the concert of my life. It's hard to call Lady Gaga's performance a concert though, because it was so much more. It was a fashion show, a play, a dance, a revival and a freak show. The fashion side of it was interesting because she wore so many different, over-the-top costumes. She makes many of the costumes herself and they are about as weird as they get. She made one costume out of meat and said it was to show that she's not a piece of meat. She wore probably 8 outfits for the concert and the first one had exaggerated ... read more

First of all, apologies to our friend Barbara Saxton—in my haste to send the last blog, I forgot to insert the details of her truly wonderful CD: “A Star is Shining”. I promise you that if you like women's voices, a cappella singing and folk songs from many countries, you'll love this CD. You can find out more at http://www.borntodrone.org. Or just google "Born to Drone" and you'll find it, among other crazy references to bagpipes and vacuum cleaners. Also, Owen works at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, not SLAK (oops!) as I mentioned. August 27-28: I imagine that most of you have seen the movie “Groundhog's Day”. In it the main character gets stuck living the same day over and over again. He's an arrogant TV reporter who is doing a stand-up piece on Groundhog's Day, ... read more

We hopped back in the hire car for a drive to San Jose today. The GPS was a godsend, directing us onto the right lanes along the 101 and freeway with five lanes each way. Only one spot on the return did it go wrong and forget to tell me to stay left, so we did a little turn-about in a side street. So we got to the Flea Market after about 60 minutes, to find it not on. Yep, despite having a number of pamphlets describing it as being open dawn to dusk, none of them noted that its only on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Anyway, I've sent an email to the web contacts. So we drove into San Jose, parking near the Tech Museum for only $20 (!), then took a walk around ... read more

Day 160 (Saturday 26/09/09, NJJ) Spent the day at the pool with the Mums. Jamie and John went out for a few hours to do their own thing. Had a nice pampering day, painting nails etc. In the evening we popped to Macy's to look for shoes for Mam and then had dinner at Chilis and dessert at Denny's (although for once I was the only one who didn't have dessert - it's the truth).... read more
