October 18, 2006, Wednesday. We left Napa and arrived at Sausalito. The Chamber of Commerce was helpful, the visitor’s center was useless, but the bike store was very helpful getting us started. This is truly a biker’s heaven. We biked out of Sausalito and up, up toward the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a bike lane but the road is heavily trafficked. So, in a low gear, we just pumped slowly uphill keeping right on a very winding road with lots of other bikers, but more cars and trucks. The day was crystal clear and warm so the views as we approached San Francisco (SF) were great. Biking after 3:30 PM, take the ocean side, because it is free of tourists and reserved only for bikers. We biked out on the bayside and returned on ... read more

I started a little earlier this morning as Pete had recommended that before I head of on my city adventures I should walk up to Tank Hill which is just around the corner from the house to check out the views from up there. Whilst it is onloy round the corner there is the small matter of the 45-degree hill that is the top of Stanyan Street to contend with first and by the time I got to Tank Hill I was sweating up a storm as it was another bright sunny day. The views were very much worth the minor heart attack, though, as you're able to get a panoramic of the entire city, from way out west on the Pacific right round to the Bay Bridge and beyond. After that I walked down to ... read more

By the time it comes to last drinks, I’ve said, “ok, this is going to be my last pint of Miller Lite” about 7 or 8 times. I run off and make a quick phone call to my Dad at home to waste the last of my phonecard credits before biometrically leaving the USA. I don’t know how I am going to physically make it out since I am so drunk and as soon as I am on the plane, its lights out all round! Goodnight America!!!!!!... read more

This is it. The next bed I will be sleeping in will be my own, not counting the long plane flight over the Pacific Ocean (plane seats were never ever made with sleeping in mind). At the very least, I get 10 or more postcards and send them home, my final calling card from the land I had dreamt of being at for so long. My sister wanted a postcard with a difference - a gay one. Not happy with the hunks in the golden sands of California, I set off to the Castro to find more gay paraphernalia to send home to my little sister. I catch a Muni from Powell St all the way down to Castro St, on the way noting that American cities had been really good at introducing light rail ... read more

It was a relatively early start today as Pete and John had to get back to San Francisco for a meeting about timeshares or something so I was dragged out of bed and we went to the restaurant across the street called "Heidi's" on Pete's recommendation. It was a nice little place, quiet cosy in its own little way and I foolishly ordered the blueberry pancakes as I was feeling a bit peckish and fancied something more substantial than a bagel. However, when the thing arrived it was enormous, there were like eight large pancakes in the stack and instead of having the bluberries cooked into them they were just liberally poured over the top, with a big ol' dollop of cream for good measure. You'll be shocked to hear that even I couldn't manage to ... read more

Last weekend we made it to San Francisco!! Out of the woods and into...diversity!?...culture!?...something different!! Its safe to say, I had a blast! I have to go back someday, when I have more time (and $$$!). We got a ride there with a friend of a friend. The trip from South Lake Tahoe to San Francisco should take 4 hours. It took us 8. Long story. Not worth getting into. We got there after dark. Adam and I had planned on staying with my friend Jimmy, and we had no problem finding his place. Thank GOD! It was good seeing Jimmy. He's all growed up! Aw! He lives in Haight Ashbury. Lots to see. We kept it simple. We went for pizza, then went to bed. Saturday morning Adam, myself, Laurie and Darren walked to Golden ... read more

I woke up with just enough time to put on some clothes and scrape on down to the free breakfast that the hostel offered before 10am. Toasted jam sandwiches with a nice cup of OJ, what a great way to start the day! I was really eager to check out the Alcatraz tour, as there were a few girls at work who had been there and done that, and really loved it. To get down to the Bay, I could have caught a cab or there was the ever famous San Francisco Cable Car, which was packed with Sunday tourists, but I managed to squeeze onto one of them on a harrowing ride up and down some of San Fran’s steepest hills. The views were amazing both over the city and over the bay. I ... read more

Before I left around the middle of October I took 5 days to go to San Francisco to see two great friends of mine. Jamie Boatner and Thorin Burke. We spent time drinking and enjoying the cold autumn weather in SF. Thorin and I went on foot one day exploring the city. I got some great shots of the Bay Bridge, Golden Gate, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the City. Some how we ended up in an old school 'Die Hard' limo with boomarang on the back and everything. Only $30 to cart 5 of us across the city. ... read more

I have a claim to San Francisco. My mother's Danish grandfather worked as a carpenter at the Palace Hotel, I think right after the earthquake. I don't know much about him, but I have a desk and a mirror that he made. My father's mother moved there during WWII after her husband died of a heart attack while my dad was overseas in the Navy. She lived in a little studio apartment on the corner of Sutter and Jones until she died in 1974. Although she lived on a meager pension, she was one of those ladies that would never be seen in public without white gloves and a hat with netting over her face. My dad was stationed there for a while during the war. Once he took me to Original Joes, and told me ... read more

After having to endure Jo's muffled restraint of Dad behind as I was checking in - I'm almost certain I heard the phrase "He's got to do it on his own" in there somwhere - not to mention my own ineptitude at even getting to the right terminal, I was delighted to finally get through security and begin the journey I''ve been planning since last Summer. Security was nowhere near as bad as everyone said it would be and I was through inside twenty or so minutes, giving me a solid hour and a half plus to kill on the other side. This was further compounded by a seemingly inexplicable delay at the gate where the people in charge just kept reading out a list of names of people to go to the desk. Then, with ... read more
