Decided that a greyhound from San Fran to Chicago for 48 hours might be a little tedious so we flew instead, even stopped off at Las Vegas en route (every bit as tacky as we thought, even slot machines in the airport). Stayed with Neil and his daughter Cloud in the Castro, formerly the gay district but not quite so much now. A very interesting area though and still full of rainbow flags. Spent our first afternoon wandering around Haight and Ashbury, where the summer of love has remained frozen in time. We visited the very cool chinatown in the evening, where we saw markets and music and ate in a great restaurant. We decided that local knowledge was best and so on the next morning, took a walking tour of the Castro with a San ... read more

I took the stretch limo option ($10 extra) for the ride to the chopper depot for my tour of the Canyon, good but not really ‘grand’……on our return, we flew down ‘the strip’ , the heart of Las Vegas, and this was the Grand part…..I’ve seen many fantastic canyons over the past 14 months, this one is big and all that, but not the most speccy by far…..but the whole Las Vegas thing, Jesus wept, this is soo different…there is NOWHERE like Las Vegas…it’s big and glitzy, total BLING…plastic fantastic, phoney, skin-deep, rip-off-heaven, schmaltzy, smokers’ heaven, money, money, money (all going one way!) ..….and there’s nothing apologetic about the plastic glitz….fantastic..they know what they are and they are damned proud of it…and it works…a totally artificial, contained, cosmos, and all these hotel/casino complexes all trying to ... read more

Arrived in San Fran and then straight to the airport Hungry Jacks, perfect food for my Vegas Hang over. Boarded the airport Shuttle to Rob's Apartment off Chestnut. The shuttle gave me a pretty good tour of hilly San Fran, but sadly the driver didn’t manage to get the shuttle airborne at any of the intersections while cruising down the steep streets made famous in those Hollywood chase scenes. Rob was still at work but I was greeted at his apartment by his house mate Dave. Rob and Dave have a cool apartment with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. We went Mexican that night and I spent the whole next day chilling out and updating blogs from previous adventures. The next day I walked down and explored Fisherman’s Warf. Waited for half an hour ... read more

Road Trip Through California, Arizona, Utah & Nevada (17th August - 10th September, 2006) Vancouver to San Francisco (Hostel International San Francisco Downtown) - California There was certainly some very strange looking low lying cloud as we flew down to San Francisco. The cloud appeared to be hugging the coastline. Spent the day exploring the city. Caught a cable car up a very steep street and we all hung on as the guy at the back tightened the brakes. The road levelled out briefly about 3 or 4 times before continuing up steeply. It reminded me of the movies where there is a car chase and the cars become airborne when they speed off the landing and then go down the hill. Walked down the crookedest street (Lombard Street) in the world before reaching Fisherman's Wharf. ... read more

So my friends I promised one last blog entry, and my newly married friend Taylor (Mazal Tov, Taylor and Jen, who are right now in Jamaica, not smoking the Sensemilla because Taylor wants to be a US Attorney) reported to me that his only diversion at work was reading my exciting travels while at his law firm. So here's my last travel entry in order to summarize my experience, post a few last photos, and tell you about SF. So Livingston was pretty. I drank rum from a coconut and had fish, watched the sunset over the Caribbean (ok, 'behind' the Caribbean technichally), then went to a bar by the beach, and drank some more with Sonia. Ahem. The next morning we returned by boat to Rio Dulce and caught the 2:30pm bus back to ... read more

We have not got much to say about today apart from we had to kill some time from 11am, when we had to leave the hostel, to 11pm when we caught the Greyhound to Las Vegas. In this time we kept two seats warm in a groovy little internet café updating blogs, e-mails and generally catching up with the world. We also met Clare who was from England but over here for work. We got chatting and it turned out that she had gone to Namibia with Raleigh in 1998 and had since volunteered so our paths had crossed before! We really appreciate the drink and chat and hope finding accommodation, work and your impending marriage plans all go well for you. ... read more

My youngest daughter, Kelci, flew out here yesterday. She is planning on living in Los Angeles. We will be heading that way on Monday, August 14th. Kelci's plan is to get a job, get a place and start make up school in January. Today we just had fun in San Francisco. We started with a tour of the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory in Berkeley. We were able to taste many varieties of dark chocolate and take a walk through the factory. We then headed to The City to have lunch at Juicy Lucy's in North Beach. It's an organic juice bar and cafe. I had carrots and hummus and Kelci had a tofu bagel sandwich. We also played some kind of "move the stones around a dish" game that I have never played before. Kelci was ... read more

After picking up our 'beast' of a Jeep - this really is the way to go backpacking, in a 4 litre SUV - we immediately set out for the Napa valley, one of the two main regions for producing Californian wine. Very grateful for air conditioning, as the temperature had risen about 20 degrees just from leaving San Fran. We were able to explore a little of the region, visiting a vineyard and a few of the towns. We felt they gave the impression of all show for the tourist. Not as nice as France, but beautiful all the same. This is a view we'll be keeping to ourlseves until we're out of the US as pro-French goes down badly here. We then changed our course dramatically to head south on highway 1 to Los ... read more

DURING MY THIRD VISIT to the US of summer 2006, I was able to stay longer (for almost 4 weeks) and visited some part of California State. San Francisco is one of them for the very first time. A month prior to my departure from Britain, I contacted my friend working in San Francisco with an IT firm if I could stay at his place during my short visit. Being a close friend and the godfather of his only daughter, he did not hesitate to answer ‘yes’ to my request. So, my accommodation for few days at the city is completely ok except that I will be travelling from my cousin’s place in Menifee (one hour away from San Diego by car) to Los Angeles, and then finally from San Fernando Valley to SF. To save ... read more
