Now you may have heard, as we had, that San Francisco is possibly the most beautiful city in the world… Now, not willing to just take someone else’s word for it, we thought we should devote a good few days to discovering for ourselves what all the fuss is about. Throughout our time in the Bay Area, we discovered a thriving and cosmopolitan city with sweet surprises aplenty around every corner…and we are not just talking about the chocolate! Here a few of our favorite things about San Francisco… The Houses - If you have a bit of a thing for real estate, and like to go around looking at other peoples houses like we do…dreaming about the future mansion that you will one day own… then like us, you will truly love San Francisco. ... read more

You know, it's funny. A few days after I first arrived in Ghana, I already felt as though I had been there for years. Now, after being back in the USA for only about a week, it feels as though I never left. About a week after Zach, Timo, Jess, and Candice decided to leave Ghana prematurely due to malaria, robbery, violence, or a combination of the three, I decided that the time had come for me to return to Western civilization as well. At the time, I felt ready to come home. I had acquired all the footage that I needed and had visited all of the spots on my list of places to go (except for Mole, which I was NOT going to travel to alone...). But now, after being home for only a ... read more

Well it's been 10 days since I've updated this but as I've been in a desert without communication for the last week, it's not surprising. So after I left Hawaii I landed in San Francisco on the 23rd of August and checked in to the Green tortoise hostel. On the 24th I caught a ferry tour out to Angel island (an island for mostly chinese immagrants into the US in the mid 20th century) and then Alcatraz which everyone should know about. It was really cool walking around alcatraz and doing the audio tour of the cells which tells you the history and where some of the more famous people (such as Al Capone) where held. That night a mate from Perth who has been travelling the world for 6 months arrived so we went out ... read more

We're going to make this one short and snappy as we were not in San Fran long and, to be honest, we were fairly non plussed! We checked into our hostel to find that we had an en suite private room. What a luxury - an unaccompanied shower! We did all the touristy stuff; Golden Gate Bridge, trams, sea lions on the pier and Alcatraz. Alcatraz was a great experience, really well done with ear phone guides and generally very spooky. Weather has been naff, a Pacific fog set in when we got here and the cold gets in your bones (yes, that really can happen! (PS edit - Only if you're name's Vicki)). We have to end on a high note though and mention our great (budget busting) night out where we were co-ersed into ... read more

Wow, I feel so bad that it will be a miracle if I get through this without throwing up. LA is a mental place, but I'll get to that shortly. We cut across from Eugene to the coast last Weds and caught our first proper glimpse of the Pacific and it was amazing. We parked up and were running about like five year olds (as normal) because it was just breathtaking, we weren't to know that this was nothing compared to what we were going to see. Most people travel down the famous Highway 101 but we looked at the map and decided to go further west and do the road right on the coast, Highway 1. Bit scary, most people know I'm not a good passenger and Greyhead took great delight in driving the car ... read more

I have finally arrived after I once again left shit to the last minute and at this exact time in Sydney I was running around like a mad woman. Seeing as I have arrived in SFO before I have left my home in Sydney, it is very weird to be having the same day twice!! I must admit that I have somehow managed to jinx myself by placing myself on plane with My Name is Earl as entertainment..ITS NOT funny!! and the most special people on the face of the planet surrounding me!! The girl in front of me complained about everything, the light, the book, the way I "moved" her seat when I went to the toilet...and to top it off she made everyone on the entire plane know that she was NOT IMPRESSED that ... read more

Oh, I love this city…something very Melbourne about it altho’ they don’t have the same competitive issues, playing the heart-and-soul to LA’s superficial glitz that Melbourne does with Sydney! OK I have had some requests for pix of San francisco...the words have dried up...maybe I need another bike?...but it's short....and reflects some of my fond thoughts of this fair city....it's nearly midnight and the occasional screams still break thru' into my little room... Lots of archaeo-tectural building facades, Victorian era carved-faced edifices still hanging in, and glorious, amongst the high risers of concrete and glass….and a constant stark contrast between the crowded derro filled areas just near my hotel and only a block or two away, the ritzy galleries, restaurants, high-end boutiques, name brand stores, parks and museums…the heart of the tourist area it seems….I wonder ... read more

Eight days in San Francisco, a cool city in every possible way. Its a great laid back place with some great little quirky touches, such a massive hills and bendy roads. Its also very cold, San Francisco bay creates a cool breeze which becomes even colder at night. We bunked down at the famous Green Tortoise Hostel, a laid back place with an emphasis on late nights and beer consumption. This is great for joining in the festivities but not so good for listening to bongo drums, clog dancers and what could only have been a door slamming competition at 3:30 am when you quite fancy a bit of kip! However, we must be fair its probably the best hostel or at least had the best atmosphere of any of the ones we have stayed. We ... read more

San Francisco was an amazing city. The rate of fake body parts on people was much less than the southern part of the state making for more real, less pretentious people. We walked a lot and visited everything we could. We took a boat ride in the harbor, under the Goldengate bridge and around Alcatraz. We went through chinatown's little alleys, even watched a fortune cookie factory in operation through a tiny doorway. We had great food in the italian section of the town.... you can tell San Franciscans like to eat! We also took the streetcar around the city. That was a lot of fun since you are allowed to hang on the railing outside of the car! Another interesting sight was the city's only remaining wooden street. It descends through a hill and is ... read more

Decided that a greyhound from San Fran to Chicago for 48 hours might be a little tedious so we flew instead, even stopped off at Las Vegas en route (every bit as tacky as we thought, even slot machines in the airport). Stayed with Neil and his daughter Cloud in the Castro, formerly the gay district but not quite so much now. A very interesting area though and still full of rainbow flags. Spent our first afternoon wandering around Haight and Ashbury, where the summer of love has remained frozen in time. We visited the very cool chinatown in the evening, where we saw markets and music and ate in a great restaurant. We decided that local knowledge was best and so on the next morning, took a walking tour of the Castro with a San ... read more
