If there was a hangover to report, it was blown away by the cool wind that blew through the streets of Toronto this morning. It was only a few hours ago that I walked back and the streets were buzzin, the lights were dancing and the rooms spinning. Now, the show had to move on to the final stop before the big flight home. One cool thing about flying back to the USA was that I got my Immigration clearance here in Toronto. Instead of having to go through the whole immigration nervousness that I encountered in San Francisco, I had to do it here in Toronto. I wasn’t so nervous this time but it also meant that once I got into San Francisco, I got straight off the plane, collected my bags and then ... read more

Well, well, well, it's almost home time! Firstly Apologies for signing off with an appaling title for my final blog, but it just came into my head and i couldn't resist! My final port of call on my travels is that finest of ports, San Francisco. I arrived from Santa Barbara on the Train, the trains over here are brilliant, so comfortable with lounge rooms to watch movies in- a nice change from the Greyhound Bus and their arsey staff. I stayed in the Green Tortoise Youth hostel, it had a great vibe about the place and is one of the better bigger Youth Hostels i've stayed in on my travels. On my first full day in San Fran I left the hostel armed with my map and walked and walked and walked... Being from the ... read more

Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair..... So you'll stand out from the rest of the tourists! Weyhey! Our trip to San Francisco has been one of firsts - first driving in the USA, first real American take-out and first Squirrels! I was glad to get out of LA on Saturday morning. The nice girl at Budget gave us a free upgrade (to the biggest family wagon I have ever driven - a Chevy Impala) and assured us it was about a six hour drive north to San Fran. Well, turns out she was wrong. By about 50%. Which is quite wrong. Driving in the USA is remarkably easy. The wrong side of the road is easy enough once you get the hang of it. It's the being allowed to make turns on a ... read more

Our journey from Seattle to San Francisco was meant to be done by car. We had organized a vehicle with AutoDriveAway.com, but the day before we were set to go it fell through and we were left not knowing quite what to do or how to make it to our next destination. After a couple of hours running around we decided that for an extra $100 a 2 hour flight would be better than the 22 hour bus journey!! We promised ourselves that we’d compensate this extravagance by spending a few nights in the tent. Although, it is pretty cold at night now….. and we’ve sort of got used to a soft bed!! So with that decided we organized the necessary and were packed and ready within the hour and off to Seattle Airport. We both ... read more

Greetings from San Francisco! Oh at last we make it to America!! I say at last because it took such a lot of faffing around to actually get here, more of that later. So, we finally got to leave Fiji after 2 more days of constant rain, in a bland hotel, in an area with no visitor attractions (or beach!) whatsoever. But I've already caned Fiji on previous blogs, so enough. The flight to the Cook islands, just 3 hours further east was memorable only because we crossed the date line. That is SO weird. In effect, we were 11 hours ahead of home in Fiji, but once we landed in the Cooks, we were a day behind! So we had two Saturdays!? Shame it wasn't my birthday, i would've had two!!! We had rented a ... read more

Alright this is an old one (and I have older ones that still aren't published). I had intended to write this blog back in September because I enjoyed the redwood forest so much. My brother and his family has lived in the San Francisco area for years and for years I have been saying that I wanted to go to the redwoods. I finally did and the woods lived up to my expectations. I got to hug ancient trees that I couldn’t get my arms around. I walked and crawled through the hollowed out trunks. It wasn’t until the end of my hike that I learned how bad that is for the trees roots. I tried to take pictures but of course the enormous trees wouldn’t fit in the frame. I learned that the circles of ... read more

What: The Fault When: 24th September 2006 Description: A 3.5 mile hike starting off from a parking lot near Pacifica up to Fort Funston, San Francisco. The famous San Andreas fault gets inland here. Impossible, rather, not advisable to do it during high tides, due to high waves and rip currents. Ocean on one side and tall 50- 100 ft cliffs on the other side. fyi, Fort Funston is a part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Plans for this hike started off a week back. I was just too scared to do it alone. So, people pooled in. Due to the time constraint, we compromised on doing it only one way having cars parked on either end of the hike. Peak high tide was at 1:00 pm and peak low tide was at 6:40 pm. ... read more
