I caught my flight from D.C to San Fran, i had to get up at 4am though as the flight was set to leave at 6.30am, managed to bag myself extra leg room again, and the seat next to me was empty so it was a good flight. Arrived half an hour earlier than expected and manage to catch the bus into San Fran for a mere $1.50... considering the airport was 14 miles away i think thats a bargain. Arrived at the hostel and was put into a 4 bed dorm with nobody in it, had a few hours sleep then ventured out for some pizza and a beer before heading back to the hostel for more sleep. Woke the next morning to find a quiet Belgian guy and a weird German dude in the ... read more

Finally I get to see the famous fog that San Fran is known for. Yes my sister mentioned she heard the fog horn blaring all night. But once the fog had rolled away we were able to see the bay, the suspension bridges and Alcatraz. It was exactly as I remembered it 6 months ago when I first flew in here on route to Vancouver. So we hopped on the bikes and rode up and around the golden gate park, admiring the gardens and architecture We found some New Zealand gardens, yep those trees and plants look and sound very familiar! I found an HSBC to withdraw some money, however it was in Chinatown and was a Chinese run bank. Very different the Chinese culture, I was welcomed by a lady at the entrance and shown ... read more

It was a love and hate relationship when I lived in San Francisco. I loved the fact that I was surrounded by hundreds of gourmet restaurants and electic shopping venues, but I dreaded getting from point A to point C in this densely populated city just shy of of one million. More so, I hated that I had to rid of my dependence on driving everywhere. I painfully discovered to stop being a slave to my car when my 10 year-old car stalled on California and Stockton Street, a one-way route, straight up hill. The car had come to a complete stand still (died) on a 30 degree angle uphill street, with a #1 California bus packed to the gill right up your tail. I only remembered that I had to turn off my engine and ... read more

My trip has started. I landed in San Francisco and made my way to the hostel. It was nice but is surrounded by strip clubs etc. A free meal was given at the hostel and I had an early night. I had a full days sight seeing the following morning. I booked myself onto the Alcatraz trip for the next day first thing. I wandered through Fisherman's Wharf, which is a touristy old fishing part of town that is now dominated by seafood stalls and restaurants. I also saw the famous Pier 39 seals (or sea lions) that have made the pier their home. I then took one of the famous cable cars up one of the famous hills. They work by a cable moving under the road, which I didn't realise was the case. They ... read more

We have had a fabulous time in San Francisco, it is a great place. We arrived to warm sunshine, which was a big and welcome change after the last couple of weeks of cold weather. Our SF initiation was the door to door shuttle service. The driver went to every terminal in the airport to make sure his mini bus was full, then dropped everyone off at their hotels. OMG! He was a maniac. You can not believe how steep the famous streets are until you are hurtling along them at ridiculous speeds. It was better than ‘The Big One’, at one point we looked down from the top of the hill, then looked at each other and said ‘ surely he isn’t going to drive down that hill!’ but he did!. Got to our hotel ... read more

I decided today that I would not do anything too time consuming as I would be catching the BART later that afternoon to get to my hotel by the airport, so I decided to spend the day walking around Golden Gate Park, which is right at the bottom of Stanyan Street, so I wouldn't be too far from the house. It was an abosultely scorching day and I decided to go to a place called Strybing Arboretum, and more specifically the botanical gardens, as it was free and wouldn't involve any real sort of time commitment. There's not a lot more to say about that really, I just spent the day wandering through the park, sweating. Two things, though. The first is somebody could make a fantastic study of the homeless and general clientele of Golden ... read more

Friday, October 20, 2006. A different bus takes us downtown SF to the financial area and we start our walking tour. Starting at First and Market, we begin up Market only to find we have walked into a film commercial for Kleenex. We were asked to sign (our life away0 releases and Bob asked to take pictures for himself, it was a Mexican standoff. Back to the walking tour, we go through Market Square onto Chinatown and North Beach (an Italian Section). We stopped at Sts. Peter and Paul, the church Marilyn and Joe DeMaggio had their wedding pictures taken. We continue up, up ,up to Coit Towers; residents purchased this lookout land and dedicated it to the California Pioneers, a beautiful view of the city. From Coit Towers we walked to Lombard Street, the ... read more

After the debacle that was Wednesday morning I decided to try and get out of the door nice and early today. All polished and shiny I managed to get downtown to the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA) at 09:50! Which was particularly brilliant as the museum didn't open until 11:00, woo-hoo! So after all my efforts I had over an hour to kill, I went and got some breakfast, which I'd neglected in my rush to get out that morning, and twiddled my thumbs for a time in the Yerba Buena Gardens opposite the museum where they were setting up some sort of temporary stage for something. My feelings on modern art, if you don't know, are generally that it is very, very shitty. Very. So I have to say that I was a ... read more

Today was the first not good day I've had so far on my adventure. Considering that's 1 out of 5, and one of those days I was being invaded by resolute German aggressors, it's not too bad a ratio. Plus, it wasn't a bad day, just wasn't a good one. To start with I forgot to charge my camera battery the night before so I had to wait for that to charge before I left the house and I didn't discover it was dead until late so all in all I didn't leave the house till after midday. I had planned to do the Exploratorium and Boudin Bakery Tour today, and whilst I still had time then I was soon to learn that fate had other ideas. First off, the only bus that takes you to ... read more
