Just down the coast a bit from Santa Monica Beach is the more Bohemian, down-at-heel Venice Beach, full of beardy, smoking hippy-types flogging funny hats, telling people's fortunes, playing lanquid jazz melodies or just chillin'.... read more

From: Mum Sent: Saturday, 2 April 2005 Subject: Franny Franny Franny - are you out there? Just checking you are okay. Love Momma From: Fran the man Sent: Saturday, 2 April 2005 Subject: RE: Franny Franny Franny - are you out there? Still Alive. The computer in my hostel room wasn’t working yesterday otherwise I would have said hello as soon as I got here. Have been to the La Brea Tar pits and the LACMA - museum of art. You would be proud of me ma they've got some exhibit and folk or handicraft art from Europe and America. When I walked in I went hmmm that looks like a Macintosh chair - sure enough it was. I also recognised plenty of Frank Lloyd Wright stuff too. Sad, sad, sad. Am off to the Getty ... read more

First let me say what an awesome game! Hats off to Michigan fans who made the trip. Michigan has some cool traditions and fans. We went for the game and found out just why so many people love SOCAL. My wife and I had been to the Los Angeles area before, but had stayed near Huntington Beach and Newport Beach several miles inland. We had a great time, but the flat land and miles of freeways around there didn't do much to inspire us. The area around the Rose Bowl and between Venice and Pasadena was very exciting. Nice drives and vistas and though we had to drive forty miles to the game and parade then back again for parade float viewing the roads were well kept and fast moving for the most part. We stayed ... read more

I've arrived safe and sound in LA. The weather is a bit chilly but still better than blowing snow. We went out for cuban food at a restaurant called Versailles. The place was a bit dark and sketchy looking but I guess its part of the atmosphere. They did serve a pretty good Colombian steak. If you're ever at this place - try a soda called iron beer- a toss between vanilla and citrus pop. ... read more

After the bustle and excitement of Mexico City, I traveled to LA. This time I cheated and bought an Airline ticket. Areo California, a small Mexican Airline. Arriving at Mexico City Airport at 6.30am was one of the most confusing experiences yet. despite speaking some Spanish I could understand very little, as with all public places the public announcements were completely muffled, unintelligible and spoken in the bored tones of someone who doesn't really care anyway. Eventually I made it to the one monitor that actually had my flight details on it, and caught the flight. On the flight, no meal, no movie, not many other passengers, but I was given a small bag of pretzels. I decided that this time I would stay at Venice Beach, hopefully meet someone or some people that would want ... read more

After a tough game of beach soccer, it is customary to go for a post-game analysis at the closest place that serves beer. Ok, maybe not, but that's the outcome of this particular game of Swedes versus locals. One local joins our little group of Scandinavians. He's not from California. Moved out there to catch a break. Pretty much like everyone else in LA. "So what do you do for a living?". "I'm a professional bum" is his rehearsed and completely unshy answer. It's almost with a sense of pride he tells that he used to sleep on the beach or wherever he could, before finding (and being able to afford) an apartment. He's waiting to catch the big break as an actor - duh! He's had a few minor roles, the "biggest" one being in ... read more

The manager at Jim's Place told us that they had another hostel in Venice, so he booked ahead for us. It would be infinitely better than that German hippy commune. Despite booking ahead, the hostel itself was still full, but they would let us stay in a camper van that was parked out back. It was great and we had it all to ourselves. Greg went off to the gym and I went along with him. I was basically the smallest person there, including the women, and the looks of total disgust when I walked in were a bit disheartening. We were there for about an hour, taking it in turns to do the various exercises, with me using a pathetic excuse for weights. Every so often Greg would point-out some world champion. I couldn't bend ... read more

Now that we were flying domestic, United suddenly went downhill. You had to pay for the beer and you even had to pay for headphones in order to be able to listen to the movie! Tight gits! At least we didn’t have the custom’s grilling when we arrived. We weren’t going to take any chances of not being able to find a hostel in Los Angeles, so we had already booked into one at Venice beach. This place got Ian’s prize for the weirdest place we stayed, with arty paintings all over the walls, Beatles posters, four foot plastic monsters over the doors. Unfortunately it was full of obnoxious German hippies. Needless to say, we hated it. Los Angeles is just one huge great urban sprawl, going on and on and on and on, with little ... read more
