Dec 29, 2009 - Tuesday Plane left Asheville on time-- security not too bad - just taking care of all the little things -- Taking off shoes, getting out one qt baggie and mini-laptop (not sure I needed to do that - the man behind me left his in its bag and she said that was okay). Would have been a lot to deal with if I also had a carry-on suitcase. It was a good thing I checked my bag anyway, because we sat on the tarmac for an hour after landing in ATL - then I had to dash a long way to the train to get from D concourse to A, which would have been really hard pulling an extra bag (esp. since I don't dash very well anymore). Fortunately we had landed ... read more

I gave my talk at the conference today. It went fine, despite some technical difficulties (my laptop froze in the middle of the talk, and I had to reset it). I also met a lot of the people whose names I only know from reading their papers, and most of them are very nice. All in all, I'm having a lot of fun. Tomorrow is the last day of the conference, and Saturday morning I'm meeting Yuval, and we start our trip with a 7 hour drive to Zion.... read more

Here is what I've been up to in LA. On Friday, I worked as a volunteer at the conference. There were 8 of us, all Ph.D. students. To use this highly qualified group of people, they gave us 1000 bags and stacks of pieces of papers from the conference sponsors to put in the bag. Being 8 CS students, we quickly came to the conclusion that the optimal way to do this was to set up 2 assembly lines with 4 people each, and divide the flyers in a specific way. Apparently it worked, since we finished in 3 hours instead of the 8 hours that were planned. On Saturday I went to Universal Studios, which was a lot of fun. On the way back I stopped at Hollywood Boulevard to look at the stars on ... read more

I finally arrived in Pasadena, after a long flight to Philadelphia, and then another long flight to Los Angeles. I think I had a 16 hour long night (l left Tel Aviv at 23:00, and 12:00 hours later it's 4:00 in Philadelphia), but I'm too tired to do the math. The motel looks pretty nice, with a big room and a pool. Tomorrow I'm going to volunteer at the conference, but the day after I have a free day - I'll probably go to Universal Studios. ... read more

Day 107 - San Francisco - Yosemite NP We had a morning of sorting our lives out before leaving Pat and Robert's around midday. It was back to living out of our bags after a week and a half of luxury! We set off to try and find San Andreas Fault but we failed in our mission - the Tomtom did not live up to it's usual standards! We still had a nice drive around Los Altos Hills though so the time was not wasted. Once we had admitted defeat we set off on our way to Yosemite National Park. It was a long drive so we did not arrive until 7.00pm but the last hour of driving into the park really got the juices flowing, we went to bed very excited about the next ... read more

Day 103 - San Francisco So this was our second Saturday 16th May! We were staying with Pat and Robert (some of my parents friends who moved out to America about 13 years ago) for the first four nights in San Fransisco and they were waiting for us at the airport to take us back to there house in Los Altos Hills (a sunny suburb outside of foggy San Fransisco!). It was very nice to go back to a nice house after such a mammoth day of traveling and there was a big fat sun awaiting us when we arrived. We settled ourselves in, had some lunch and chilled out for a few hours but decided that we had to do something otherwise we would not manage to stay awake until the evening. We took ... read more
