The Huntington, or the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens to give its full name, was our destination Sunday afternoon. The Huntington is a very popular weekend attraction for Southern California residents. Families and people of all ages enjoy coming out to stroll the beautiful and varied gardens. (This despite an entrance fee of $29 per person.) The Huntington Library is in San Marino, just across the city line (street) from Pasadena. The Huntington comprises a rare book library, a botanical garden and an art collection. Our goal this afternoon was to visit the library and see a bit of the gardens. Railroad entrepreneur and businessman Henry E. Huntington (1850–1927) acquired Rancho San Marino, near Pasadena, in 1905. He and his wife, Arabella, redeveloped the working ranch and farm into a botanical display of 18 ... read more

" Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen." Benjamin Disraeli. Routing. Highway 101 to Santa Barbara and then Highway 405 to Los Angeles. Distance 285 km. Total distance to date: 675 km. The real beauty of RV travel is that there is a basic plan but other than plotting a next destination, it is more or less a case of "roading" by the seat of one's pants. And so, on a chilly and misty morning, Sue and I slipped quietly out of Pismo Beach with a southerly plot to Los Angeles where we planned to spend a day with Richard and Laura Biebuyck (Richard is the son of Julien and Jeanette whom we had spent time with in Lancaster, PA). We left our travelling mates ... read more

We won the freaking Rose Bowl, y’all! And we play for a national championship next Monday. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I thought I would divide this post into two parts: the good, and then the bad. So here we go. The good: We Won the Rose Bowl! I can’t say that enough. It’s still like a dream, but the fact that there’s still another game to play keeps me sobered. I got to see my Dawgs at the Rose Bowl Stadium, the home of UCLA, which is in the Art Deco style. So this was really the trifecta of my travel aspirations. That’s pretty amazing. I also got one of those little lapel pins that I collect from every bowl game I’ve ever attended, but this time it was free! Before ... read more

There are any number of people who have a vision of southern California being warm all year around. In part, we have Hollywood movie producers to thank for that as they always show women in scantily clad clothing no matter the time of year. California locals laugh at tourists when they show up during the LA winter expecting to wear t-shirts and flip-flops. While an LA winter is no reason to pack the snow boots, you need to be prepared and dress appropriately. Layering is the key. Fortunately, we’ve lived in CA enough years to know this so once we bought our Rose Bowl tickets we made plans to bring a proper coat and gloves back from Florida when we were there for the Christmas Holiday. Driving before the break of dawn toward Pasadena, we focus ... read more

I am going to live in Chile when it is our summer, fall, and winter, and their winter, spring, and summer. I hope to learn how Chileans feel about rain. Do they despise it in their cities, feel its apparition to be a nuisance? Or do they go out to the sidewalks and gutters and squares to revel in the miracle? Will someone join me in dancing bachata in the rain? I hope to learn how Chileans greet each other. In Spain they kiss on both cheeks with either smacking gusto or cool delicacy, depending on how much they like you. In the Philippines they kiss only one cheek, taking a deep breath through their nose to bring the scent of you into their soul. In America they sometimes hug, sometimes high five, sometimes interlock in ... read more

Geo: 34.1472, -118.144Hi again, Actually, There isn't a lot to tell you about today other than it was a great day! We got up semi-early and enjoyed our free hotel breakfast. Then we donned our special wristbands, made sure we had our tickets, hopped in the car and drove about a mile to the shuttle bus that would take us to our final Rose Parade event.Today is the post-parade viewing of the floats. And, wow, you really can get up close. It was very crowded but since the floats were spread over 2 miles you could usually wiggle into a close photo position.Every float had a little barricade around it and was manned by a "white suitor" The folks in white suits are the parade volunteers and they were everywhere these past three days. Today they ... read more

Geo: 34.1472, -118.144Rose Parade day!As expected our alarm went off at 5am, and as expected we hit the snooze button twice before finally muddling ourselves out of bed and into clothes. Lots of clothes. Layers of clothes. The low 30s isn't that cold, especially if you're moving, but we are going to be sitting for hours.Dressed in my outdoor jacket over a fleece jacket over a long-sleeved t-shirt over a turtleneck my upper body was thoroughly encased and almost immobilized. Jeans and wool socks completed my ensemble. Glasses, sunglasses, hats, scarves, gloves? Ready to go!The hotel, which offers a free breakfast beginning at 6:30am also has free coffee 24 hours a day, so we headed down to the lobby to fill up our thermal coffee cups. Whoa! Look at all the people!! Looks like the hotel ... read more

Geo: 34.1472, -118.144We hadn't made any plans for today and slept in a bit, but still got up in time for our free breakfast. At breakfast we shared a table with an older couple from Arizona. When I said we were from Loveland, CO, they surprised us by saying they had lived in Loveland until 1974! Last year they traveled back and visited their old house on Namaqua Hill. Out of all the people in this hotel, we meet them?!After breakfast, Jeff went to the room to clean up and I went to the exercise room to do physical therapy for my new knee.Okay, we have a plan for the day. We are going to "The Huntington." I've heard of the Huntington Library but didn't realize that in addition to the library, there are also ... read more

Geo: 34.1472, -118.144Southern California - where one of the lead news stories is frost on a car in Burbank! We laughed out loud. Today we have tickets to "Decorating Places." There are three venues we can visit to see the Rose parade floats being decorated. For those of you who don't know, the floats are decorated with organic materials only and every inch needs to be covered. The organic material isn't just flowers but also can be coffee, fruit, seeds, beans, lentils, seeds - anything organic appears to be fair game. One of the following photos has a nice list. Having no idea what to expect we headed out and were surprised to pass a band drum line practicing on a sidewalk as we drove through Old Pasadena. We soon arrived at the Rose Palace. We, ... read more

We left the hotel around 7am for the relatively quite drive over to Pasadena from our nice digs nearly on the beach in Santa Monica. I think we got to the parking area at Brookside Golf Course on the North side of the stadium around 7:45am. We had plenty of time to tailgate, and ended up seeing a great game. Michigan State came out on top, 24 to 20 over Stanford.... read more
