Day 0, as I'm calling it, was the flight to LA and the drive to San Diego. First class was pretty cool, it was those new seats that have dividers in between each seat so you basically have privacy. Not to mention, your seat lays down perfectly flat like a bed. Got plenty of rest in prep for the long travels. Upon arrival at LAX, we picked up our bags and the rental car and drove to San Diego. It was only about 8:00 local time (midnight our time), but by the time we got into San Diego it was 3:00 our time and it was all Lesley could do to stay awake in the car. Good thing it has XM.... read more

One of my biggest concerns about my trip was not making my connection at LAX. I had six hours, but I had heard some horror stories. In the end, it was panic over nothing. My BA flight landed on schedule (one of my main fears had been a delay out of Heathrow, robbing me of time at LAX) and I made sure I disembarked quickly (it actually was quite aggressive!). Cleared immigration within 5 mins of joining the queue and the immigration officer was actually pleasant, something I've never experienced with US immigration before. Picked my bag up, cleared customs, then put it on another carousel (it was already checked from London through to Auckland, but when transiting in the US you still have to pick up. A short walk from Tom Bradley Terminal to T4, ... read more

Have you ever taken advantage of Park and Fly packages? The alternative to parking your car at the airport, Park and Fly allows you to stay at a hotel and leave your car in their parking lot during your trip. Most Park and Fly hotels have free shuttles to the airport with knowledgeable drivers that drop you at the right terminal. The convenience of not having to deal with finding a parking spot at the airport, carrying your luggage across the parking lot, loading it on to a shuttle, paying higher parking fees and so on, make Park and Fly our choice for long term parking. We have used this form of long term parking many times and have never been disappointed. The last online discount booking for this service we used Trinity Reservations. Very reasonably ... read more

L.A.'s fine, the sun shines most of the time and the feeling is laid back. Came for the weekend to see the much anticipated Pee Wee Herman show...it did not disappoint! Rumours are they are going to make this into another movie...can't wait! Favourite moments? Oh...so many...um...definately 'let's go play with the deep fat fryer'...gold! Lot's more to say...no time to say it so later. Oh...new lounge...must review. Is a Maple Leaf lounge so already know it is more awesome then most. Delic food, good view of the airport goings on. Complaints? No inside toilet (ewwww) and only Chardonnay in the fridge (yuck!). 7.5 out of 10 (YVR at US departures is still the best ;) Check out that heavy!!!... read more

Day 2? Monday January 18th 2010, 2:50am EST Still feels like day 1 but technically it is a day later…yaaawwnn. I’m in LA now waiting to board my flight to Sydney. My plane was delayed by about an hour so now it won’t be leaving until 1am west coast time 4am your time! I forced myself to stay awake on the last flight and now I’m wondering why! I never drink coffee but this seems like the perfect time to start so I bought a very overpriced Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino (the bottled refrigerated kind not the fluffy fresh frozen kind) and a croissant (the processed packaged kind not the fresh toasty kind). Hopefully that should get me through another hour or so! On my last flight I got to watch “Fame,” which I had never seen. ... read more

After days of stressing over the incoming winter storm I made the decision to get out of WI early and head to LAX. Of course, that means I needed to spend an unplanned night in LA (thank you Marriott points). Mike managed to leave Reno a day early too and join me for a day of hanging out and enjoying the Los Angeles sunshine. The day coming to an end just puts us that much closer to our flight. We made our way to the airport and are chillin' in the SkyClub at the airport for a few hours until our flight leaves...oh, did I mention free booze in the club? With toasts to vacation and toast to the holidays, we're managing to pass the time just fine. Have a very Merry Christmas!... read more

OK, In&Out Burger was a little above average. You really need to understand the subculture/cult of this restaurant so goggle it and find out all the weird lingo for off menu ordering. The menu is only 2 types of burgers, fries, and drinks but can be ordered 1500 different ways. Rick, had "animal" style which was the double patty burger grilled in mustard, grilled onions, and extra "spread" (whatever the heck that is). Then only reason we knew about "animal" style was someone in front of us ordered it that way and we asked about it. I went the normal route with the double patty without the grilled stuff. Burgers were good but we just don't understand the phenomena. The place was busier than walmart @ 5am on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. They had about 20 ... read more

Here we are in sunny LA and it's sunny (of course) and 80F. Nice plane ride which was uneventful (thank goodness) with no screaming babies on board. Thank U! Nice hotel close to LAX with free shuttle. Got a screaming deal on Priceline for the hotel and it's pretty nice Renaissance hotel. Found out the famous (or so everyone says) In&Out Burger joint is right down the street so we'll be checking it out for dinner. However, I reserve judgment because I doubt they can be better than The Vortex burgers. We'll spend a lazy day here watching movies and lounging by the pool. We leave tomorrow afternoon for Singapore so we can sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before the 19 HOUR!!! plane ride to Singapore. At least, we'll have a day to rest ... read more

Ansa and Echo left Santa Barbara at 0500 on Monday, Oct 12 for Marina del Rey. The sea was calm, the sky overcast with light winds from the southeast. We motored along at about six knots. At 0750 we were off Pitas Point. At 1120 we went by La Jolla Peak. Wind was always on the nose. Arrived in Marina del Rey at 1630. Transient docks here are managed by the Burton Chace Los Angeles County Park. We got a couple of nice big slips no problem. Ever since Morro Bay, Echo has been having power problems with one of the batteries. It just wouldn store much charge. We tried to find a replacement in Santa Barbara, but couldn find one in stock. We tried again in Marina del Rey and were able to get one ... read more
