Day 1 of TravelingFive days after the end of school and my summer travels have finally begun. I've been given the opportunity to travel to Mexico and Canada through the Fulbright-Hayes Summer Program. The seminar is entitled "Getting to Know America's Neighbors: Identity, Community, and Environment in Mexico and Canada." Along with 15 other teachers from around the U.S., I will be studying the creation of cultural identity and environmentalism in each country. We will also be talking about the identity of North America as a whole. (Read www.comexus.org.mx/Summer/project.php?id=6 for a full description.) Upon my return I will need to implement a project in my classroom and school. This blog is the first step of my project. I would love to share my experience a little at a time with each of you. So here it ... read more

And it begins... I'm sitting here at LAX, wearing my Beatles shirt (purposely worn so I will feel like royalty when I get off in London), waiting for my flight , typing away at my ThinkPad which is hooked up to my Sprint phone which acts as a modem and listening to my mp3 player (I kinda miss the ipod nano’s sound quality, but I still can’t justify paying $200 for that, so I recently returned it). I just got a call from John (John Lee, one of my best friends who is also going to Europe but not through the same program) and he let me know that we probably won’t be able to meet up at the terminal before we fly out to London because my plane is about to board and he’s still ... read more

Well, here we are at LAX - Los Angeles Airport. Maybe I should give a bit of a background on who 'we' is. 'We', at the moment, is Toni and me. I met Toni back in 2003 when we did a contiki tour of Europe together. After that Toni invited me (or did I invite myself?!?) to join her in Egypt in Feb 2005 and this trip to the US, Mexico and Canada is our next adventure! Given we haven't killed each other on previous trips, this one should be a walk in the park (famous last words..?). We're in transit on our way to Las Vegas, our first real stop in the great US of A. We spend two nights there at the Bellagio, then check out and go slightly down (or could be up, ... read more

We headed out to LAX again, on board America West flight 2043. I was in coach seat 7A on the 737-300 aircraft. Just as the day before, we went over to the Japan Airlines counter to try for Tokyo again. This time we would be successful. We had an enjoyable flight on board JAL flight 063, a 747-200 to Narita. I was in coach seat 56J. In Tokyo, we just stayed in the airport and awaited our connection to Hong Kong. As an aviation enthusiast, I was very excited to be flying into Kai Tak airport. Our connecting flight was on board Japan Airlines 735, which was a 747-400. I was in coach seat 35K and slept most of the way, just waking for the dinner only. The food on JAL was fantastic! I had a ... read more

Or so we thought........ One of my co-workers was going to Hong Kong to visit family and invited me along. We left Las Vegas on America West flight 2043, a 737-300 bound for Los Angeles. I was in first class seat 1C for the hour long flight west. Once in LA, we went over to the Tom Bradley terminal for our flight to Tokyo. As airline employees, we fly stand-by and today was not our day. We tried the two Japan Airlines flights to Narita and they were both full. We went back to America West and took flight 2470, an Airbus 320, back to Las Vegas. Once again, we were given seats in first class and I was in seat 2F. In Las Vegas, we went to our homes and would meet the next morning ... read more
