While growing up in the 1960's traveling was never a subject that was discussed in our family. My father owned his own business and worked 6 days a week to provide for my mother and my 2 sisters. Our life was comfortable but there was never time or extra money for vacations. Seeing the world, understanding other cultures, learning geography was not on my radar. My wake up call was when I was 13 and in 7th grade. My father had finally taken the opportunity to join some friends for a 4 day fishing trip, something he deserved and was looking forward to. Unfortunately, the day of departure, my father had a heart attack at age 40. Thankfully, he survived and recovered well but he never did take a trip. He passed away at age 53 ... read more

After two days of theme parks, we were ready for another relaxing day on the beach. The kids spent most of their time playing in the sand. They built castles and dungeons with a moat. They splashed a little in the water, and then we decided to go for a walk down to the pier. The pier was lined with little shops and a few musicians. At the end of the pier, we found stunning views looking back on the beach and various resorts. We put our names in to wait to be seated for lunch at Ruby's Diner, located at the end of the pier. Unfortunately, we didn't get any views, but the diner was perfect for our family. It was a 50s theme, and instead of little coloring books for the kids, they gave ... read more

Playing in the Sand at Huntington Beach

We had a bit of a bumpy entrance into Orange County, but we landed safely and quickly found my parents at the John Wayne Airport. The kids did a great job and were excited to check out the beach. So, that was the first thing we did! We checked into our hotel, got changed, and then set out for the beach. Although the thermometer wasn't reading all that hot (maybe 65 degrees), the sun was beating down hard so it felt like good beach weather. In fact, the sand was really hot on my feet, and I thought I wouldn't want it any hotter. How often can you say 65 degrees is good beach weather? It was! The kids enjoyed playing on the sand and checking out the water with Grandma & Grandpa. I loved watching ... read more

(Guilty sigh...) The last you heard from me I was home for spring break, 4 months ago, enjoying a brief stint in the great state of Arizona. Well, as you can imagine, quite a bit has happened since then and I've clearly neglected to keep up with my blogging. I know, I know. Shame on me. I'll do my best to cover everything I've missed in as few words as possible as I demonstrate how to gain 15 pounds in just 2 months. Well, I passed my finals (!!!) in June, packed up my Belgian life, and headed back to Orange County to surprise my dad for Father's Day a week earlier than they were expecting me. Sneaky, sneaky! I then went to Phoenix, and then the Grand Canyon with Matthew for a joint Birthdaycation. We ... read more

2/3/2012-10/03/2012 So the surprise worked, Crystals reaction to us surprising her was "oh F..k!" so that meant pleased to see us right??? Well it took us 4 days to get over the get lag but now all is good. Food portions as to be expected are huge but we will never learn "just a small appetiser to start!". Took the local bus to the beach. Mmmmm didn't know that's where they kept the circus these days! Too many freaks in a confined space for me!! Huntingdon beach nice though, a warm 80 degrees to check out the surfers! That along with naughty seagulls in San Diego who literally emptied this ladies bag on the beach to eat the sandwich she had put in there earlier! We are now official reserves of the "unforgiven" softball team! I ... read more

Well, I made it through the gauntlet that was the final exam period here in Belgium. 3 looong weeks to prepare and execute written and orally defended exam questions for a ga-jillion courses. Although I was emotionally and mentally exhausted when I boarded my flight home from Brussels, I was more than ready for the warmth of both the sun, and lots of loving arms in CA. I was so blessed to spend 10 whole days in Huntington and Templeton/Atascadero, CA. My parents came to LAX during rush hour to pick me up Thursday, happy to brave the traffic to and fro. NOT! Once we arrived at home hours later, I enjoyed my first burrito (obv from Chipotle) in a few months. Duuhlicious. I unveiled the hundreds of waffles that I had smuggled home from the ... read more

Hello everyone, God we miss Bob the Beetle!! We've been on about 20 busses to get us up here and we've got plenty more to go before we get to Hollywood. We're also very conspicuous with our massive backpacks (and the fact we're the only none Mexicans!). First stop on our trip around the O.C is Huntington Beach, known as Surf City USA. We caught a Greyhound to Santa Ana and realise the directions we have are useless. Luckily a complete stranger comes to our rescue and shows us how to get there. As we're waiting for the bus, I go and get a drink of water. Clio is sat reading her book, minding her own business when I normal looking guy (or so we thought) comes over and the following exchange takes place: Guy: You ... read more
