This week has been a lot of studying mixed with cleaning and packing. The GMAT is this saturday and I would like to be out of the apartment in a week. A new skill I learned this week is to ship luggage. I sent a large 55lb piece of luggage out with LuggageFree. It was full of bedding and ski clothes. They will drop it off at my dorm. Let's just say I'm paying to not have to lug that thing around, in and out of taxis and gondolas, in a tiny hotel room and in tiny elevators... yikes. It was expensive, but worth it. The going-away/birthday party is planned and going to be totally fun. We're going to have cheese, wine, lemoncello, spaghetti, lasagna, cake, and ghelatto. We got my itinerary finalized and hotels booked. ... read more

This week has been a full week. I got 2 cavities filled, which of course is always fun. But, before I go away for a year, I'd like to make sure my teeth a healthy. I can check that off my list. My VISA came in the mail today. No not a credit card. My little piece of paper that says I'm allowed to be in Italy for the 330 days. Which is kinda neat. It's a sticker inside my passport and some paperwork. Also, talked to the insurance company about getting a year's worth of prescriptions. WE ALL KNOW THIS WAS FRUSTRATING! I was transferred 3 times and given only a fax number for the department the i needed to talk to, finally to be told they can only authorize me to take "3 months" ... read more

I have 5 weeks to go and the frustration with everthing and everyone has reached its peak. I have a massive to-do list and have purchased hundreds of dollars in things "i need" for the trip. Things live voltage adapters, financial calculator, easy-travel clothing, slash-proof purse, and so on. I'm going to break!!! (make sure it's not on you) And all the red tape from school is getting ridiculous!!!! It literally took Mom and I and entire day to get out my VISA application. 10 forms, 3 of which needed to be notarized, a picture, my original passport, and a pint of blood later, we finally got it sent off. Also, I got 2 vaccines last week, that was an ordeal in and of itself. I went down to Vian, Ok, in order to keep all ... read more

Hey everyone- I came home from camp on Saturday (July 19, 2008). A very emotional thing to do. I love Dwight Mission with every fiber of my being, but everyone has to leave at some point. I know I'll be back to visit, some to alumni retreats and family camps, but it will never quite be the same. I came home 2 weeks early so I could spend time with my family and take care of paperwork for school. The red tape of any university can be frustrating, and i am there. Hopefully I'll get the financial aid office to talk to me tomorrow. Then I will finally know if I will be able to afford this program. Any way, I'm sure all of that will resolve itself. While I'm taking care of paperwork, the plan ... read more

In response to Joe Stubberfield's email, which read: Maybe they should have traded the planes for that RV they were looking at. I have driven from MD to LA in two separate legs in a total of 41 hours. They could have split that up among drivers and spent and extra day or two in Grand Canyon, Monument Park etc. Wouldn't have to worry about bathroom breaks cause they would have one built in. Even would be burning less total fuel. I guess they are already committed.......or need to be. We did, in fact, trade the Cherokee in for the Winnebago. We were hoping Larry would join us so he can secure a sweeter deal, but he was stuck in Mena, AR - with no beer! Dick's got the full story so you'll have to wait ... read more

Well, after a very long day Friday, all seven of us finally made it home. We were honestly concerned that we might not have made it back before Monday, but the Lord took care of us and got us home; we just had to be patient. We received an e-mail from Brad (the pastor of CrossChurch) this morning that said that they had 83 people at their first service last night! And more than that, 14 people tithed to the church that were not on staff!! God is faithful and is strong when we are weak. San Diego is an absolutely beautiful, but completely lost city. Continue to pray that God uses CrossChurch to make an eternal impact on that city and that God displays His power and sovereignty to them in a way that they ... read more

Last night, there was a “winter storm advisory.” I’m sure an inch of snow would shut down the city. It rained pretty hard, and there was some awesome thunder and lightning, but nothing much. It wasn’t even freezing rain this morning, just cold and a downpour (which was in fact pretty exciting). It was so nice being back in a theater today! Load in was wicked early, 7. Thus far, getting all my stuff off the truck, set, and hooked up has taken 4 hours. Today, just shy of 2. Oh my goodness! Focus was amazing. When the TD asks, “Are you fine focusing 2 positions at once?” that’s a good sign. We flew through it all! I didn’t know what to do with all my time after lunch. Turns out I would spend a few ... read more

Finally, we’re back on the road! Yea! Busy morning of packing and making breakfast and a zillion egg salad sandwiches. If this trip has done anything for me, it’s make eggs less appealing to eat. We left the church almost 3 hours after the kids, so we just sort of hung out with the staff there. Good times. Then we hit the road. Just Beth, Sarah and I in the van. Background: when I was little, I NEVER slept in the car. Now, it seems I’m in the car 7 seconds and I’m out! We were listening to “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” and I was texting some friends, and I put me feet up and leaned back and I remember trying really hard to stay awake, but no dice. I figured my phone would vibrate ... read more

Well, we're back now and I thought I'd wrap this blog up with a few interesting statistics about the trip - Over the course of 18 days from June 11th to the 28th we travelled by train (3060 miles) and car (1478 miles) a total distance of 4548 miles through 9 states (Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah) occupying an area (904,055 square miles) that is 29% of the area of the 48 contiguous states. We crossed the Atlantic/Pacific continental divide 4 times, utilized 8 different forms of transportation (train, automobile, streetcar, ferry boat, subway, taxi, ski lift, and feet), and passed 6 major bodies of water (The Arkansas River, the Rio Grande River, The Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco Bay, The Great Salt Lake, and the Colorado River). We stayed ... read more

Sarah and I thought it would be fun to keep everyone updated on our travels through the West this summer, so we've set up this blog. We'll try to update it somewhat regularly as we go from one town to the next. For those who don't already know - here's a brief itinerary: Albuquerque, NM San Francisco Salt Lake City/Park City, UT Denver/Ft. Collins/Winter Park That's all for now, but expect more sometime in the middle of next week.... read more
