Motorhome News from North America 1 Arizona - The Grand Canyon State 10th - 24th January 2006 Planning and preparation for this trip had taken weeks of research, through the internet, many books and countless brochures. Then came the frustration of settling domestic bills, selling Smiley (our beloved UK Autotrail motorhome) and our remaining car. Letting our little house and moving furniture into store left us weary on the day of departure. And then, the sad good-byes to family and friends. Our 747 finally left the Heathrow runway some 30minutes late, heading for Phoenix Arizona and with a smile and a high five the reality of our next adventure began. We were on our way at last, expecting to be away from home for a year or more, travelling some 40,000 miles clockwise right around the ... read more

Two suitcases, two rolling duffle bags, two carry-ons, one computer bag and one backpack, all completely stuffed, sit in our entrance hall waiting for departure. Can you say high maintenance? It’s a good thing that term applies to both of us. Of course, I’m convinced that the huge bottle of mouthwash Alan is taking is the major culprit. He’s sure that clean breath will be his key to a successful cruise. We weren’t sure we would make it this far. I got sick, once again, this weekend. It’s a good thing we belong to the “pack three days ahead club.” A trip to the doctor today armed me with an antibiotic prescription to be used if necessary. But, it was the lost checkbook incident that threatened to unravel the trip and our marriage. After frantically searching ... read more

Ok, we're not leaving yet. This is a test page. Ah, but you ask. Where are they going? Since this blog is mostly for our family and friends, you already know. But, just in case we haven't talked your ears off about it enough already, we're leaving on a 45-day cruise on Radisson's Voyager. We'll travel from LA to Hong Kong, posting our thoughts and pictures here. Hope you'll check back often and be sure to post a comment.... read more

Howdy Folks, HAPPY CHRISTMAS to you all, hope you are not too exhausted from all the festivities already. We thought we would take this opportunity to send you seasons greetings and do a quick Blog before we head off into the IT wilderness of Mexico. We really enjoyed our first Thanksgiving experience, thanks to Ian & Margie for taking us and Edie for inviting us. We had a great day, in excellent company, in a beautiful house overlooking the Hollywood hills. We feel as if we have had our Christmas dinner already, we did pass on the JellO though. Now it was time to leave the great Metropolis and head off towards the Mexican border. En route (our new number plate, by the way) we decided to visit Palm Springs/ Desert; everyone we met had told ... read more

On September 23rd Kim and I took a nice side trip to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. There are wonderful exhibits explaining the plants, animals and geology of Arizona and the Sonora Desert. The museum is located in the mountains on the west side of Tucson. We drove through Saguaro National Park on the way....what breathtaking scenery. The back roads were very challenging to drive....curvy, swervy, and narrow. And did I mention NO guard rails? YIKES! Even though this is called a Museum....that's a little misleading. It's an outside 'living' museum with live animal exhibits in their natural habitat, hiking trails with cactus gardens....not very much of it is inside. We saw everything from hummingbirds to big horn sheep. We hiked around about 80% of the entire park which is pretty impressive in 100 degree heat ... read more

Tucson/Tombstone Kim and I drove from Roswell, NM to Tucson, AZ in about 8 hours. We left at 3:00am so we could beat the heat and majority of the traffic. It was eerily quiet driving through the mountains outside of Roswell in a town named Ruidoso Downs. We were the only car on the road for miles and miles. We were lucky enough to see the sunrise over the mountains and enjoyed every minute of it. What a sight! We arrived in Tucson around 11:00am and were able to check in to our hotel early. It’s a good thing because we were pretty tired. My Aunt Helen and Uncle Mike live in Tucson so they picked us up for dinner. They chose a wonderful Mexican restaurant named La Fuente….the atmosphere was awesome. Mariachi band, hanging plants, ... read more

We arrived, as you may recall from the last post, by Amtrak at 4am feeling rather crazed! Checked into a cheap hotel in downtown Tucson an slept. Next day we went to the airport to collect our rental car (another white Dodge Neon - the same as the one we rented in Tennessee!) and drove to our hotel on the outskirts of Tucson. We are staying in a really nice suite (another cheap deal secure back in the UK!) which has a fridge, microwave & living room. We unpacked and got in the car to go to Wal-Mart to buy groceries as part of our ever increasing economy drive!.The only thing is that Wal-Mart don't sell groceries, they are more like a cross between Halfords and B&Q but they also sell clothes!??!?! (we thought they were ... read more
