HAPPY EASTER TO ALL AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BECKA This past week Jennifer, my daughter, came to stay with us for her spring break. Jennifer, now prefers to be known as Katherine, her middle name. This is a family name which honors 2 aunts, who recently passed away and a great-grandmother. Katherine arrived on Monday. We had been saving some trips for her visit. One day we rode bikes around Green Valley to relax and become familiar with the area. Then we started off on 3 trips to Nogales, Mexico, Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Biosphere2. One of her courses now is astronomy, so her favorite place was Kitt Peak. Nogales was quite a hoot. Just going from store to store and experiencing a different place and culture was great. We ate a very good Mexican ... read more

Green Valley, Arizona, has proven to be a retiree's heaven, as so many had told us. No one can be bored here with such a variety of activities. The Sonoran Desert and the many mountain ranges always in view, add to the beauty. The weather has turned warm (in the 80's) and sunny. We are able to bicycle every day if we want and swim in the pool. Our location is in "Villa's West, in the middle of everything. From here we can ride our bikes almost everywhere. There are lanes just for bikes and golf carts along major roads and everyone waits for bicyclists. We found another couple to bicycle with. John and Peggy are not retired, but farmers taking a break from North Dakota's winter weather. Like many who come here, we started looking ... read more

It all fit in the car, again, and we were off to visit friends in Midland, TX. on the 28th. We had a lovely visit and a great meal in one of Midland's finest, and then we went back onto the prairies of Texas and New Mexico. We spent a night in El Paso, which Joanie prefered to where we had been, and then leisurely finished the trip on the second. I guess that it is good to take that trip occasionally, to reassure one that we are not running out of land. (Or trucks). Traveling across it surely gives the passenger time to read the paper and do his crossword puzzles. Keeping the driver awake can be a problem. This area is typical of Arizona. Lots of sand, cactus, space, and nice and warm weather. ... read more

In May, 1985 I purchased my first new vehicle, a small 4X4 pickup truck. I did that for my new job and my first assignment was in Tucson, Arizona. I was so poor then I had the choice of getting a cheap hotel in the Tucson slums without air conditioning (at 100 degrees F), or camping in the cool air of the tall Catalina Mountains on the North side of Tucson. My new truck was set up for camping so I chose that option. (Camping not permitted by my new employer...to bad, so sad.) One of my first excursions was in Saguaro National Park (East) a few miles East of Tucson. (There is a detached section of Saguaro National Park, West of Tucson that I never visited.) Getting close (about ten miles East of Tucson, Arizona) ... read more

In June 1985 I purchased a new 4X4 truck for my new traveling job, and my first assignment was for the summer in Tucson, Arizona. Since my small truck was set up for camping, I chose to stay in the very nice cool Catalina Mts. rather than the slums of Tucson. I had a one hour drive from Bear Canyon to work and back, five days a week. At work in the morning my host company gave out unlimited drinking water and ice to all employees and sub-contractors including me. Back then the Catalina Hwy was a narrow winding poorly paved road with no guard rails. Starting up the Catalina Mts by the Coronado National Forest sign, clearly visible was a number of wrecked cars and trucks that fell hundreds of feet down the cliffs. (Later ... read more
