February 10, 2007 Saturday the 10th Andy headed to the U of A baseball game (8-0) and Jennie to the San Xavier Mission for a Zen Photography class field trip. Mission San Xavier del Bac, an historic Spanish mission located south of Tucson, was originally founded in 1699 by the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino. The current building, built between 1783-1797, is still actively used by Franciscans and the Native American community. Also known as the “White Dove of the Desert,” the pristine white structure stands alone on the desert floor near the Santa Cruz river, which apparently surfaces in this spot (although there is no sign of it at the moment.) The church structure has a look of being unfinished—possibly as a way to avoid taxes long ago since buildings under construction were exempt from ... read more

January 20-Feb. 3, 2007 While we were in Hawaii, Tucson had a serious cold snap. Unfortunately, the result was that over 700 homes, including the one we are renting, had frozen pipes. The resulting water damage has wiped out our master bedroom, so we are now living in a smaller space than we planned on. The owners have been great, repair work is underway, and our spirits are undampened. We are trying to pack as much as possible into the time we have here. We have joined a local racquet and fitness club where Andy is working out and playing tennis and Jennie is swimming. We have our library cards, are—between us—taking three courses at the local community college, have spent a wonderful day at the Sonora Desert Museum and another at the Chiricahua National Monument ... read more

February 9, 2007 Today we headed north of the city to visit Biosphere 2, a fascinating and expensive ($150 million) scientific project to create a giant self-contained mini-world. Financed by billionaire Edward Bass of Ft. Worth, TX, Biosphere 2 (the earth being Biosphere 1) was built primarily to determine if life could be maintained in an enclosed structure on other planets. It covers 3.15 acres and contains not just living space but an entire environment for plants and animals to exist with a water cycle, air exchange, etc. After two reasonably successful experiments—a group of eight people stayed inside for 2 years beginning in 1992, and a group of 7 completed a 6-month stay in 1994—the project lost momentum, probably due to lack of funding. Columbia University took over the Biosphere and used as a site ... read more

After 800 miles on the road, I arrived in Bowie (pronounced BOO’wee) to the sight of a man pissing in his front yard. I couldn’t help but look twice, upon which he waved, in a way that suggested I join him. Instead, I continued past broken down cars, decrepit buildings and closed businesses. Bowie looks a lot like other rural American towns slipping into economic oblivion. Granted, that is just a first impression and the town no doubt has a lot to love about it. Including being home to many dedicated servants of Diamond Mountain University, the 1000 acres of yurts and scrub out past the pistachio plantation. I did get a nice welcome. A Romanian fella from Western Australia, perhaps his name is Bogdan, showed me the kitchen yurt, the yoga yurt and the toilet ... read more

We left Bisbee and drove north through Tombstone and on to Tucson. After having our windshield patched, we took a walking tour of the old town of Tucson and the Presidio. Along with the little booklet, the sidewalk actually has a purple stripe to follow as we wandered around this old mission town. Tucson is also the home of Arizona University. It was a beautiful sunny day. Saguaro West National Park was our destination today. The Desert Museum, most of which is outdoors, contains animals and plants native to this Sonora Desert region. It is a natural history and botanical garden all in one place. THIS MAYBE LAST BLOG AS WE HEAD INTO MEXICO ... read more

11/28/2006 3:53 PM Today has been pretty uneventful. Woke up at a rest area, got some weird looks from the other people there and found coffee at a truck stop. Passed through a wind field with hundreds of windmills and drove by a dust devil before we found ourselves in El Paso buying filters for grease collection. Now we are at Home Depot getting some plumbing PVC to build the intake filter. 11/29/2006 5:39 PM Made it to Tucson safely last night in time to go to bed. We are staying at a friend of Brian’s house in the desert, southwest of Tucson about 20 miles. Brian finally got a chance to put together the new filter before going to sleep. This morning we woke to eat at Waffle House and then off to a hardware ... read more

At Hu’s (short for Lehua, my sis). Lehua lives in a beautiful house in Tucson. I plan on spending just two nights here. I have a dental appointment in Mexico tomorrow and it is only an hour drive from here. It is my niece’s (Macy) birthday; she is 6, so it will be nice to get to spend a little time with her. ... read more

The goal was to get away, get to know each other, hike and camp in a very different and warmer location that had cheap flights from Chicago. I was a great trip with a couple of interesting adventures. We started in Tucson with the Desert Museum where we learned how to pronounce Saguaro and see the various amazing living things in a very hot dry place. From there we went to the Organ Pipe National Park where we were the only tent campers and at times the only ones on certain questionable trails. We ended in the wonderful Sabino Canyon with a wonderful lunch stop on a rock in the middle of the river. It made for good memories and stories.... read more
