While I was researching my trip to south east Asia I found so many helpful blogs, I was so grateful to the great information out there I decided I needed to contribute as well. We flew from Atlanta to Phoenix. Rented a car from the airport, very economical. From there we went straight to the Grand Canyon National Park. We didn't make any reservations for campsites, online asked for 30 days in advance. Otherwise you'd have to go to the parks services and they release a few campsites per day. We weren't sure if we were going to be able to get a campsite, but in end of August week there were several. Oh, there are two developed campsites in the park, but if you didnt make reservations and it is full you can drive 15 ... read more

Not much to report today. Just a perfect day around and in the Grand Canyon. Weather was magnificent and this place is amazing. Now Chris and I took nearly 200 pics between us - and I have to say that none of them does it justice. You just have to see it - for the size, the colour, the variation etc. ....... However, we have cobbled together a few for your perusal - including the ones where we walked down into the canyon (and back) - and that was great fun and a little bit challenging. With that walk - along with the rim walking we did, we managed about 16 kms - so are pretty tired. Early tomoz for a chopper flight then off to Monument Valley - where we are staying in a hotel ... read more

Woke up at about 6am to watch the Sunrise over the Grand Canyon for the 2nd day in a row. Must say it was absolute killer to get out of bed as our leg muscles were killing us. We looked like cripples walking around. After watching the sunrise, headed over to get some breakfast. I got vegetable skillet with eggs, veggies, potato and bread, Scott got steak skillet with biscuits, grits, steak, eggs and potato. Mine was really nice and I managed to finish most of it. Scott liked his but didn’t like grits at all! The best thing about breakfast was seeing many other people limping around the restaurant, which we dubbed “the canyon strut”. Finished packing and checked out by 8.30am. Drove out of the grounds and on the way saw some Elk. There ... read more

Alarm went off at about 5am this morning; we got changed, ate breakfast and packed our bags ready for our hike into the canyon. We caught the free express shuttle bus to South Kaibab trail head at 6am, arriving there shortly before 6.30am. We managed to catch a little bit of sunrise before setting off on our hike. Now, I must start off this blog by saying that every official bit of information from parks services tells you not to hike to the river and back in one day as there is serious risk of illness or death due to dehydration/exhaustion. I had looked into these hikes before we left and thought if we had enough food/water we should be right. My brother had done the same hike a few months ago and didn’t have any ... read more

Alarm went off at 5am this morning and after a restless night sleep for both of us we got up, showered and ready to go. Drove to the Grand Canyon Airport ready for our Grand Canyon River Adventure. Checked in and waited for our plane. It was a small plane, seated about 15ish. First on the agenda was a 1 hour flight over the Grand Canyon, Marble Canyon, Glen Canyon and Lake Powell on the way to Page airport. The sun had just come up and the views were just spectacular. The only thing wrong with the flight is it went so quick!!! We had a smooth ride and amazing views - again the photos just don’t do it justice. Once we’d landed at Page airport, we were given breakfast, which was pretty big - muffin, ... read more

We like to hike, it's kind of what we do for giggles. So when friend and co-worker Mary mentioned that she and a posse of her friends from Arizona were going to do a rim-to-rim day-hike at the Grand Canyon, we perked right up. Haven't done THAT before. It sounded like a lovely way to see if we still have what it takes to go 24 miles across one of the world's more impressive ditches. I mean, we didn't have anything else going on this weekend, so why not? We left Dolores by about noon on Friday, our chauffer Mike whisking us 5 hours up to Jacob Lake where little cabins awaited us. We threw our bags in the door and hopped back in the car for another 50 minutes to catch the sunset at the ... read more

There are many beautifull places in this world & we have been fortunate to visit many of them. The little side canyon on the Grand Canyon that contains the homeland of the Havasupai People is beautiful beyond belief. It is a ten mile walk from the parking lot on top to the campground in the canyon. The tribe operates mule pack-trains to the campground. We carried our packs down with us, but opted to use the mule train to carry them to the top for us. About 8 miles down the trail, we passed thru the village of Supai. There is a helecopter service to the village for the residents and for paying visitors. There is a store & a couple of cafes in the village as well. The Canyon was hit by a major flood ... read more

Today was our Grand Canyon West Rim tour with a bus pickup at 6am at our hotel. Bus was prompt and was doing the rounds picking up people before taking us to the tour office which was a few miles south of the Strip. At the office, we paid the balance of our trip, bought tickets for Skywalk and were given a light breakfast before boarding a black double decker luxury bus. Our driver and guide was a bloke named Felix who was not only helpful and informative - he was also pretty funny which made for an enjoyable experience for all. Since we only had 2 hrs sleep - we were nodding off for most of the trip. First stop was the Arizona side of the Hoover Dam which I think is an engineering marvel ... read more

Shorter drive ahead of us today. We opt for the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet which is full-on. Kids again free (yippee!). I have scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage, refried beans in a tortilla, a 'breakfast burrito' that looks like a deep fried tortilla wrap stuffed with egg and capsicum. Pancakes with fresh blueberries, stewed apple, maple syrup and whipped cream fills up my plate (yes, that was just my breakfast!). But I still find room for two pastries with coffee . Ky tries a few things, decides the omelette and french toast don't taste very nice but enjoys the plain scrambled eggs and bacon. Joseph and Liam pig out on fruit loops, rock melon, watermelon, little sausages and more. In the car, we drive north up the Strip first to have a gander, then back down. Ky ... read more

Greetings from the Grand Canyon! Our flight from San Diego to Phoenix was quick and smooth, it only took about 50 minutes. We hired a car from Phoenix Airport, which we will drop off in Las Vegas. It’s really nice having a car, it’s like our own little space to spread out all our stuff as we move from one place to the next. Craig also appreciates not having to walk everywhere. It didn’t take too long for Craig to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road, although we were both a little nervous leaving Phoenix Airport. Craig is still turning on the windscreen wipers instead of the blinkers, and I keep going to the driver’s side of the car to hop in. (She lies about me hitting the windscreen wipers - ... read more
