Hi troops, another lovely day in the US. Jan and I went out for breakfast as Bill had work chores to do. We set off for the Grand Canyon about 1100 and got to our hotel in Williams about 1430 then off to the venue. I have seen a bigger whole but wow! Is my opening comment. We really did it well, viewing from many different vantage points and I got what I reckon is a cracker sunset shot. Dinner at a diner on route 66 was the icing on the cake. Looking forward to another cracker tomorrow.... read more

Heading west through New Mexico toward Arizona, we decided to follow a highway sign to check out “The Petrified Forest National Park”. An excellent detour right off route 40. Matt and I imagined traveling across these lands for the first time and happening upon these wide dark canyons- you simply can’t tell they're there until you’re right upon them. A short drive in the park brings you through 13,000 years of history- petrogylphs and late Triassic fossils. At one stop we found an incredible landscape laden with stump after stump of colorful petrified wood. This ‘wood’ is now almost solid quartz, and weighing in at 168 pounds per cubic foot, it can only be cut with a diamond tipped saw. Insane, and hard to believe until you run your hands across it. Continuing on we arrived ... read more

4/13/2012 -Lows in the 30s and very windy. On the way in we stopped at the National Geographic Show/Shop for a look. Spoke with a Ranger and got his view of the best view points and a map for all. Drove on into the Visitor Center, watched a short movie on the Canyon; then took the free shuttles to the view points. The routes are Blue, Orange, and Red. Orange Route - Mather Point, Yavapai Point & Geology Museum, and Yaki Point. Blue Route - Maswik Lodge and the transfer point to the Red Route. The blue route is the Grand Canyon Village, Lodges, and Shops. We stopped at the Maswik Lodge to eat, at the suggestion of the Ranger mentioned earlier; very good food and prices were reasonable. Red Route - The Abyss, then we ... read more

On Thursday at noon, I arrived at Flagstaff airport. The airport is very small, and within no time I had picked up my suitcase and my rental car. It was a beautiful, but cold and windy day. My first visit took me up to the Lowell Observatory up on Mars Hill, just above Flagstaff. I will write more on this little trip soon, but now I will start with one of the most spectacular places I have ever been to: the Grand Canyon. It is located about 1.5 hours north of Flagstaff. You drive through the San Francisco Mountains, then a plain opens up, and suddenly, almost out of nothing, the ground drops 1,500 metres in front of you. I had arrived at the Grand Canyon. The canyon is enormous. It is over 400 km long, ... read more

Woke up pretty early today after a horrible night's sleep. The air here is just so dry that your throat is always sore. I would have had over 1L of water to drink through the night. Anyway, this morning was helicopter morning! We arrive at the helipad and got weighed so our flight was balanced. I was put with Myra, Rachel, Sharron and two random people. The flight was amazing, it was so good to see the Grand Canyon like that. It was just awesome as we crossed over the rim for the first time to see the ground just drop away. The flight itself was a bit rough. Myra had warned me that she might have to grab my hand as she wasnt the best flyer. At one point as we were leaving the vcanyon ... read more

Once again, not so much to tell today, it was a full day of driving. Our first stop was at Walmart, which should have been a pretty normal stop, except for Bruno who decided to drive a shopping scooter around, and Tom who bought a moomoo (if youve seen the episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets really fat you'll know what I'm talking about) Our next stop was Seligman, which is apparently the birthplace of Route 66. There was a shop and some memorabilia, but it was really not exciting at all. Our last stop before the Canyon was to see an Imax film. It was really crap and most people slept through it. Once we finally arrived at the Canyon we stopped at a lookout for a while before we arrived at our lodge. ... read more

Scepticism was rife as thedribbleman was questioning whether it was too early for another ‘grand’ canyon experience. Only 13 months earlier I was standing in front of the 2ndbiggest canyon in the world –Fish River in Namibia, Africa. Could I be “Wow’d” again like last time? It’s hard not to compare sometimes and it’s even harder to experience a Grand Canyon view like the first time. But mine was in Africa. I said at the time, “Well I don’t think I need to do the Grand Canyon anymore.” I felt that way still even as we arrived into Flagstaff, the closest town to the Grand Canyon. Roberts Parish had few requests and this was one. We managed to catch up with the 2 UK girls we met in Nashville a month earlier. Requesting a similar imaginative ... read more

We hopped in the car and made our way out into the desert. A lot of the US had been amazing; however, for the most part they were environments that weren’t too far removed from the ones you could find back in the UK, this however was completely different. As far as you could see in every direction was desert, dry shrubs and stark cliffs. Our plan for the day was to get as close to the Grand Canyon as we could so we could set off to get there early the next morning. Just a short drive from Vegas, our first port of call was the Hoover Dam. It was a very impressive sight to see as were the drops either side of the dam! Even though it was mid-October it was still almost unbearably ... read more

Another night of not much sleep. I was in time for the bus this time, however, the bus driver told me I was not able to take my luggage with me. And I had just checked out. This got me worried. But I sorted it fast; I had no other option. I had to go back to the hostel dorm, knock on the door (luckily others were awake at the time), and I had to ask them to watch over it for me. The roommate Cyril, from London, just said to leave it here, it will be fine. I was just a little concerned because I had already checked out - but like I said, I had no other choice. So I left my luggage behind, and headed back to the bus, getting ready to tour ... read more
