Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon March 7th 2012

I arrived in Kowloon just after 1pm and HK immigration was very fast, lucky as my ferry was the only ship docking at the time. I think waiting times could blow out if you dock at the same time as a cruise ship (or two). I walked the length of the cruise terminals right down to the Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel which is at the tip of the Harbour City shopping centre and just before the TST Star Ferry Terminal. Location wise, this was superb for a panoramic view and my room did not disappoint. I had an unobstructed view of HK island across Victoria Harbour and it was indeed wow factor - definitely one of the best cityscapes in the world! This hotel was mid to high range and I loved it despite the ... read more

Asia » Macau March 5th 2012

Woke up to a great view outside my window across Nam Van Lake and noticed that Macau is a mix of old and new. Modern buildings and casinos mixed with old historical Portugese heritage buildings. I decided to have breakfast at the buffet inside Wynn which was okay but not great. There was a mix of western dishes and asian and there was even fresh sashimi which is a little strange for breakfast. To finish off my breakfast, I got a coffee from the Starbucks located in a corner of the Wynn casino area which was fantastically convenient for me. It was now time to explore old Macau which was about a 15 minute walk from the Wynn and although it was quite cool I was sweating by the time I got there due to the ... read more

Asia » Macau March 4th 2012

Sunday morning and I was heading over to Macau at midday which left me the morning to relax and have breakfast. I returned to the congee shop from yesterday and it was busy with early morning risers grabbing breakfast. I devoured another excellent bowl of congee and also grabbed a fried dough cake before taking a final walk around Central. Found another Starbucks and was interested to note of the 3 other people in line, 2 were from the States and 1 from europe. Foreigners really don't enjoy the local version of coffee! The Macau ferry terminal is located in the Shun Tak Centre which is a short 5 minute walk from Central and you can get there along the elevated walkways. As it was a Sunday morning, the walkways were filled with Filipina maids hanging ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island March 3rd 2012

Well it was my 3rd day in HK and I am getting more and more used to the pace and buzz of the place. Again, I was up early and being a Saturday morning there was even less people on the streets at 8am. I thought I would take advantage and get to Tim Ho Wan at 9am again and beat the crowds and within 10 minutes of opening the place was packed. I tried a few more dishes and was happy with each of them and seriously it is a good change from eating re-heated frozen dim sum which quite prevalent nowadays. Didn't have much on the agenda today so basically just relaxed after breakfast, giving the rest of HK a chance to wake up. The weather actually was quite cool this morning and the ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island March 2nd 2012

One thing I am quickly learning about HK is that the consequence of having a great night life is that people do not get up early. It appears office workers do not wander in until about 10am and that shops don't often until 10:30am. Even the wet markets that sell produce don't get going until almost lunchtime! Normally, these markets are early morning events but not in HK. I was up and about quite early and with the sole goal of getting a coffee. I headed out towards Sheung Wan and went past a bustling dim sum restaurant with the old style carts. It was full, loud and chaotic and apparently of a dying breed. Dim Sum is becoming more civilised with many places replacing traditional carts with menu and computer ordering systems. A few blocks ... read more

Flight from Sydney to HK was totally enjoyable. Checking in was painless - the Cathay Pacific check-in was quick with no queues. Although the flight was delayed about an hour due to bad weather in Sydney but once underway the flight was smooth, service - efficient and friendly, and the meals actually were pretty decent and filling. People worldwide have negatively commented on Cathay Pacific's pod seats in economy but I had no complaints. Yes they are a little firmer and don't actually recline but the hard bit of the backrest was actually good support for me and there was plenty of legroom. The A330-300 was quiet (much more than the powerful B777-ER) and I was able to get plenty of shut eye. We landed in HK just a little behind schedule but in the middle ... read more

Asia » Singapore November 7th 2011

Third day in Singapore would be spent doing plenty of sight seeing. Started with a local breakfast in a nearby coffee shop which catered to mainly local working folk. Cheap way to start the day! Next did a bit of wondering around City Hall before hopping on the MRT to Orchard Road where we spent a few hours doing window shopping and eating. The shopping centre food courts are awesome and unless you are buying clothing, they are the highlight of each shopping centre. If only we had this quality of food at our food courts in Australia ... not to mention value for money! From Orchard Road we made our way on the MRT to Little India which is a buzzing area. It was boiling hot and not the ideal weather for wondering around in ... read more

Asia » Singapore November 6th 2011

So after a busy day yesterday, I found myself sleeping in well in truly by my normal standards. Didn't wake up until after 9am which is a lot later than normal for me. Maybe the bed at the Mandarin Oriental was so good? Went out looking for some breakfast and realised not much is open before 10am in SG especially on a Sunday. However, it was already uncomfortable hot and humid. Found a few interesting places to eat but I decided to go to a dim sum stand in the Marina Square complex as it was air conditioned! Had some pretty good rice noodle roll with prawns and fresh scallop dumplings. I then decided to head back to the hotel and relax as I had a few hours to kill before check out and there wasn't ... read more

Asia » Singapore November 5th 2011

My most painless flying experience ever. Singapore Airlines check-in at Sydney International Airport was completely empty so I had a full 3 hours to relax before boarding time. Flight was boarded in a timely and orderly fashion and straight away I was impressed by the service level of the flight attendants. The thing that struck me first was the number of FA's. There was 4 to cover less than 20 rows in economy compared to the 2 to cover twice as many on an Australian airline. As it was, you were promptly taken care of and meals were quickly served and cleaned up. The food was the best I ever had on an airplane and I was actually full by the time I got to Singapore. But the most important thing that made this whole flight ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas June 18th 2011

Had the pleasure of watching Cirque du Soleil 'O' at the Bellagio tonight and it was pretty good. However, compared to 'KA' at the MGM, I don't think 'O' was as equally as spectacular. 'O' is different in that it has pools of water which the performers constantly jump in and out from. The high altitude dives were definitely breathtaking. I think the action in 'KA' was more fluid and at a quicker pace which made it a more interesting spectacle. It is up to personal taste / opinion, but I certainly preferred 'KA'. When in Las Vegas give yourself the opportunity to see both (or even more) and make up your own minds. Met up with 2 friends from Sydney tonight and had a good time catching up with them and sharing stories. It is ... read more
