So here i am back in Flagstaff after another fun filled week at the Wupatki. Much better overall experience there this week but at the same time i'm glad i am going somewhere different next time around. Most of the crew members were the same and we had the same supervisor so not many new faces or names to get used to and i felt as though the time at camp was a lot better than last week. Day one had the usual early start: wake up at 6, have breakfast and head off to Cedar house to load up the van and then an hours journey to the camp site at Wupatki. This week we set up camp as soon as we arrived which meant starting and finishing work later but allowed us to get ... read more

After my first taste of America's National Parks (Yosemite) I was very excited to be going to another one. The trip did not start well however. It was a 12 hour bus journey from LA to Flagstaff (a town about one and a half hours out of the Southern Rim of the Grand Canyon) so i booked an overnight bus so i could save on a nights accomodation. I am starting to grow tired of long journeys on buses now, so this one seemed to drag, and it was a full bus so i was squashed in next to someone. I could live with this however, because i was going to the Grand Canyon right? That is until i arrived in Flagstaff and onpicking up my carry on luggage (my backpack) i found it to be ... read more

Sooo, i'm back from Wupatki and it was rather awesome. We left at about 7 am which meant waking up at half 5 only 2 days after a 10 and a half hour flight with the effects of jet lag still present. The first task of the day was driving over to Cedar house to load up the van with the weeks food supplies and tools needed for the project. After this, the journey to the national park took about an hour and everyone was still sleepy and quiet. Day one involved putting up tents in windy conditions, which turned out to be fun, and generally preparing the camp where we were going to be living for the next 3 nights. The work on the first day was probably the most interesting and varied: me and ... read more

So after a 23 hour journey; leaving heacham at 7.30 am and arriving in Flagstaff at 11.30 local time, I have finally arrived at project base camp. First impressions of Arizona were that it was very HOT, still over 35 degrees by 5.30pm, cooling down to about 10 degrees by the time i got to the apartment in flagstaff. The accommodation looks OK so far, 4 to a bedroom and i am on a top bunk :/ I am sharing with an American named Sean who left this morning on a 3 week project, a German called Florian and i am yet to meet the other person as he is away on project at the moment. There are about 15 other people in our apartment with a good mixture of nationalities: German, British, American, Dutch, French, ... read more

Whoa. Since my last entry, we have driven all around the state of Colorado, visited Utah, and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back. We originally planned all these great places to see...Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc, but between concert tickets I bought for a show in Colorado and a last minute opening for the hike down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the time restraints eliminated a lot of options. However, it did create the chance to see a lot more of Colorado than originally planned. I'd like to start by saying how much I appreciate: A. Hiking Boots B. Wool Socks After putting $10 bucks in a quarter slot machine and coming out of a Casino $120 ahead, I decided that money would be well spent on a pair of quality hiking ... read more

Day 138 (Saturday 05/09/09, NJJ) Slept well last night. Left campground by 10am. Saw the road formerly known as Route 666, that was the official road name until it was changed for the benefit of the superstitious. Left Monticello, passed by Mexican Hat (the town and rocks), into Navajo land and on to Monument Valley. Soon after the skies opened up and we pulled off the road for a bit. The weather cleared and once again it was hot and sunny. The land was pretty but as not as well run as it would be if it was managed by the National Park Service who do an exceptional job with the parks. We had to pay a fee to the Navajo to visit the main viewpoint in the valley. We travelled further west and saw thunder ... read more

Geo: 35.1982, -111.651We made it farther tonight than we had originally planned. We left Tahoe in the morning and drove a few miles through Nevada before getting back into California. The drive is long across the desert, and there are not very many towns along US Highway 395. It finally joined back up with I-40, and we felt like we were back in civilization, although it's still a long way between stopping points on I-40, too. We had planned on staying in Kingman, but it seemed early so we changed our reservation to Flagstaff. As it turned out, Kingman would have been better. Just a few miles east of Kingman we came across a complete traffic halt on the highway. A bad wreck a couple of miles in front of us kept traffic stopped for over ... read more

Over the last two days, we've stayed the night in Albuquerque and tonight we're staying in Flagstaff. For lunch yesterday, we ate again at Bumble Bee's Baja Grill. Mom comments, "For lunch I had a naked veggie burrito. It was heavenly." I thought my burrito was a 9.5, still .5 off for being a tiny bit too spicy. But other than that, my burrito was heavenly. Last night, we ate at Garcia's Family Restaurant in Albuquerque. I ate a burrito with pico de gallo, beans, rice, and cheese. It was good, except that I couldn't use my hands because it wasn't in a wrapper. But, I liked that that the beans were very tasty, a little mushy, but that's what makes it so good. Mom has this to say, "I had an egg, potato, bean burrito ... read more

I've been to Flagstaff several times. All the times it's been great. The first time I went, I ate at the Beaver Street Brewery. It was amazing. I wasn't old enough to have the microbrew, but I heard it was good. The pizza was phenomenal. The wait was a little long, but the people who ate there were friendly, so you always have someone to talk to. The second time I went, I ate at Sizzlers. It is like a buffet I guess you could say. A whole group of us went, so the wait was long, but the food was decent. The service was friendly. The thing I loved about Flagstaff was that it was cool when we were there. It wasn't particularly hot. In the winter, there is snow, which you rarely get in ... read more

We left early from our motel in Santa Fe to try and make up time. We are hoping that if we can make up time, we can go through L.A. on Sunday which would likely be the best traffic day of the week. Also, we need more time to go up the Pacific coast. Traveled through Albuquerque and on to Gallup where we were supposed to have spent the night last night. We stopped at a grocery store and bought some cut-up fruit with the idea of going to a park and having fruit for lunch. When we were exitting the grocery store, we noticed a patio table and chairs that was for sale and chained to a post by the front door. So, like the country folk we are, we just sat down and made ... read more
