When it snows in Flagstaff, everyone from Phoenix goes up the I17 and to the Snowbowl. The Snowbowl is a ski resort with some really nice walking trails. Its kind of pricey to stay - so stay at the standard Holiday Inn types. Not much to write about - just enjoy the snow!! ... read more

After an eventful drive from New Mexico, we finally arrived in Flagstaff, AZ. This is where we were staying to be able to have access to the Grand Canyon (nicknamed: Granyon). Upon arrival we befriended the guy who worked at the front desk of the hostel. Befriended may be a strong word.. he was torn between liking our energy and hating the fact that we couldn't help but talk at least 3 at a time at any time. After deciding we weren't so horrible he instructed us to go to a bar down the street, the one they send the people they don't hate to. We spent the night playing erotic photo hunt, meeting creepy indians, and basically acting a fool. We got to know more of the hostel workers and other flagstaff townies. Overall it ... read more

Sun 4 - Mon 5 May Getting to the Grand Canyon was an adventure in itself. In San Diego we bought road maps of California, Arizona and Nevada and googled the best routes to take. By major freeways the journey would have taken us about 8-9 hours. But we found one guy’s description indicating a far more interesting route that took about the same time. Well, he got the interesting part right, but the journey all up took us 17 hours (dramas included) and we arrived at the Canyon a whole day late. So the first drama started when we went to pick up our hire car on Sunday morning. The rude man at the front counter said our things wouldn’t fit into the compact two-door car we had booked, so we would have to pay ... read more

With our home base in Flagstaff, we set out to explore the many attractions in the immediate area. At the top of our list was Sedona. Situated at the southern edge of Oak Creek Canyon, about 20 miles from Flagstaff. The drive itself is very picturesque, the highlight being Slide Rock State Park where hundreds of people were picnicking, bathing or simply relaxing among the rocks and pools. Then Sedona itself, is a beautiful little town, very artsy with many craft shops and galleries. The red rock formations surrounding the town are a stunning backdrop and make it a hugely popular tourist mecca. Many famous people, movie stars et al are either frequent visitors or have a residence in Sedona. Our next excursion was to Sunset Crater and Wupakti National Monument. The two are very close ... read more

In the summer of 1995, we decided to drive to Arizona to discover the Grand Canyon and other natural or man made wonders that we had read about. The nearest town to the canyon is Flagstaff, so that was our destination. However, we only got as far as Toronto when our vehicle developed some major problems. I guess you'd call having the entire muffler and tail pipe go crash, clatter, bang on the 401 a major problem! We had it repaired but our destination was too far to risk continuing the trip with that vehicle. So we went back home, very disappointed indeed. But, not wanting to accept defeat, we came up with the bright idea to take the train out! (We had inquired about air fare, but it was way too expensive.) So... we boarded ... read more

Well, we arrived safely in Flagstaff tonight after a relatively easy drive from Vegas. We stayed in Las Vegas until the early afternoon for Tony to finish writing his FINAL PAPER for his Master's Degree! Once here, we attempted to check in to our hotel, but we were unable to do so, since the hotel we had a reservation for did not allow pets. They had already spotted Tucker jumping around in the truck. So, we were able to check in to another hotel, and are planning to head out in the morning to Amarillo, our next stop. It'll be a long day tomorrow!... read more

Obfuscator writes: We woke up and continued work on the blog in our Flagstaff motel. The connection had gotten poor during the previous night, and we still had a lot of work to do, so we took advantage of our late checkout time, and got back to it. The connection in the morning was much more stable, and faster, so things went more quickly. From there, we found a place to get the oil changed. This took quite a bit longer than we would have liked, and involved sitting in the shop, since there didn't seem to be much in the immediate area to see. Eventually we were all done though, and we headed into the center of Flagstaff to see what there was to see. We found a pretty, old downtown with lots of nice ... read more

Hey Loyal followers, how are we doing? Nikola and I have had quite the adverture since we last posted a blog. We've been to Monterey, Carmel, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and we are currently residing in the little known town of Flagstaff, Arizona sitting at 7000ft (about 2500m for you metric types in less developed nations than the almight USA) and completely covered in soft white snow!!!!! (Niki finally got to see some, yay!!) Its been quite a trip I have to say. Carl and Becky picked us up in San Francisco, which you already know about, from there we headed south to Monterey Bay, we were heading for Carmel-by-the-sea (remember where Clint Eastwood was mayor) but we realised that Monterey was cheaper, so we found a nice cheap motel, complete ... read more

Historic route 66 We flew in to Las Vegas on 24th December and after a night's stop we drove across the Hoover Dam, stopping briefly to have a look at the 70 year old, 1200 ft long massive construction that stands tall across the Colorado river. We decided to skip the Valley of Fire because the park was closed on account of Christmas, promising ourselves that we would return a day sooner to visit it. But, no promise is worth keeping, unless there's money or food involved, so we went to the chocolate factory on the last day! But keeping things more chronological, we drove away from the dam stopping at a scenic view overlooking Lake Mead. We took the I-40 to Flagstaff, Arizona, our first destination. Driving along the interstate is more efficient but we ... read more

THE AMERICAN ADVENTURE SOUTHWEST AND THE ARIZONA AND UTAH CANYONS On the 28th of September we farewelled the Grand Canyon and headed south to Flagstaff - a university town popular for skiing and the train crossroad town for Arizona on Route 66, where a train goes through about every 15 minutes, some being hauling 140 double levelled containers. We spent the weekend here getting topped up on our groceries and awaiting Corrie’s dentist appointment on the Monday morning to get the cap put back on that fell off just before Tracey’s wedding. During the weekend we visited Wupatki and Walnut Canyons and the Sunset Volcano crater. We also hiked the Elden and Buffalo mountains, enjoyed some time in the old historic part of Flagstaff and bought ourselves some NZ Merino wool Icebreaker tops and a ... read more
