Where on earth is Seldovia? Well... it is tucked away in the Kenia peninsula opposite Homer in Alaska, with a population of about 260 and the only way to get there is by seaplane or boat! There are no roads connecting Seldovia to the rest of Alaska. It felt like an Island but we had to keep reminding ourselves that it was part of the mainland.. It is a stunning little place, there is so much beauty - it's impossible to describe or to capture. Besides the natural beauty there were also a few restaurants and 1 teeny litlle grocery store, no roadmarkings or stop signs and very friendly locals. If ever you are in Homer it's SO worth taking a boat or seaplane out to Seldovia. It was about a 2hour boat trip there, we ... read more

Another cool, rainy day. Stayed in most of the day. Jim and I walked up to the office of the RV park this morning. The owner of the park has 10 acres here and his parents own 80 acres around the park. The parents moved here in the 70's. The owner's father was at the fish cleaning station with his grandchildren. He was fileting a skate. A skate is a member of the sting ray family. This one was about 3ft across. They only filet the top part of the wings. He also had just finished fileting a shark that was about 2ft. long. He offered us some, but we passed. I need to make a correction about last night's blog. I mentioned that one man had got 95 salmon and he was entitled to 35 ... read more

Our RV park is located between Soldotna and Kenai on the Kenai Pennisula. This area is very busy with people coming here to fish. We drove to the town of Kenai today. I took a picture overlooking the Cook inlet joining the Kenai River. Hopefully, you can see all of the people dip netting for salmon. They are literally standing next to each other. They are on both sides of the inlet. They had their tents set up there also. The dip net season for salmon started July 10 and ends July 31. They use a 48" diameter loop net that is on a long pole. They all had on heavy waders as I am sure the water was cold. The air temperature was around 60. I am not sure of the maxium take on this ... read more

Had kind of a slow day today. We had light rain this morning and around 60. We went to church this morning and then out for breakfast. It took us almost 2 hrs. to get our food. Friday, on our way here, Jim turned on the air-conditioning and the blower wouldn't work. Jim thought maybe it was a fuse. He has been trying to find the problem since we got here. Yesterday, one of the men (Dan) who is involved with the Work Camp that I mentioned yesterday, came by to invite us to the dinner last night. Jim mentioned his problem. It just so happened that Dan used to have a heating/air-conditioning business in Michigan. He came by today and he and Jim finally found the problem. It was a four prong connector that had ... read more

We left Palmer this morning - beautiful sunny day - around 70. Drove south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway. Absolutely beautiful drive with the mountains on one side and the water on the other. I thank God for the eyes to see all the beauty he has given us. We drove through the Chugach National Forest and came to the Portage Valley where the Portage Glacier and several other glaciers are located. Beautiful. We had lunch in our RV looking at the Portage Glacier. Don't think you could get a better view anywhere. We traveled on down the Kenai Peninsula. Again, this drive is beautiful. Lots of lakes and rivers. I noticed in the Kenai River that there were fishermen standing in the water fishing. I asked Carroll about this as he lived here and ... read more

12th-15th July ’12 The Kenai Peninsula We spent the previous night in the Artic Adventures Hostel, which was owned and ran by an American lad who had come to Alaska backpacking 7 years ago, saw the place up for sale at a bargain price, bought it and had been here ever since - he had now put it back up for sale as he couldn’t face another winter! He tried several times to convince we I would really like to buy it!! The hostel was fine, apart from the 1 bathroom to 5 rooms which meant if you needed to use it, you had to leave your door open so you could dash in as soon as someone came out. As the rooms were half the price of staying anywhere else in Anchorage and we were ... read more

Saturday, June 18, 2011 Diamond M Ranch and RV park, Kenai Have now driven 10,028 miles. 55 degrees at 11:00 High clouds I worked some more on the daily narrative to try and get up to date and Valerie added pictures to my previous entries and posted a few to the travel blog. We both worked on cleaning Rosie II more. We had to leave the space by 11:00, so we closed things down and drove over to the bathhouse to take showers. Since it was 11:30 before we left, and we wanted to do some shopping in town, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant for lunch. We had a really good meal and took half of it home and had it for dinner. Filled the gas tank before we started out also. Since it was ... read more

June 16, 2011 Thursday Deep Creek Campground. Sunny looking west, cloudy and rainy looking to the east. 51 degrees out at 10:30 am. The tide this morning is the lowest for the month, at a minus 4.19 so, the beach was crawling with people out clamming. With a fishing license, free for kids, you are allowed 60 each and there is no size minimum for the clams. Hence, the beach was crawling with families with children in tow and church youth groups. One of the major problems with such a fluctuating tide is that boats have trouble getting into the water. They have solved this problem with big wheeled tractors. The boat is put on a boat trailer and towed across the mud flats and out into the water until it is deep enough for the ... read more

Today we head back south through Anchorage to Kenai Penisula. We had to stop off in Wasilla for our Wal -Mart fix, and to once again look for Sarah. No luck on Sarah, but we picked up the needed supplies for the next few days. We drove through some beautiful mountains along side the Kenai River, and some feeder streams. We chose the Beluga RV Park in the town of Kenai. It was very cramped parking but if it had not been cold and raining it would have been some nice scenery. It was at he end of the pinkies, a species of salmon and residents were allowed so many days of net fishing, and I have never seen so many people along the banks of a river in my entire lifetime. Our new best friends Dave & Pam, whom we had met in McCarthy, invited us to sponge off their friends Bob & Patty for a weekend at their cabin, so we could fish for King Salmon on the Kenai river, which boasts some of the best salmon fishing in the world. Obviously after long and careful consideration we said yes! Bob who is half Eskimo, raised by his Eskimo mother, has hunted whale in just a canoe. Eskimos now use modern weapons in their canoes, rather than the traditional method of jumping out of a canoe onto the whale’s back and spearing it down its blow hole to sever its spinal cord. Given Bob’s credentials we thought that the odds for catching a really big fish were good! Eskimos hunt whale sustainably. One whale may feed ... read more
