We set off early and take in a wildlife refuge before breakfast. Nice to get close up to bears, moose, caribou and various others even if they are effectively in a zoo. They have got a couple of orphan bear cubs who were cute. Maintaining a healthy dose of scepticism we (well, Ed) speculated on whether any of the bad luck that has afflicted these poor animals was actually engineered, to ensure a successful wildlife refuge. Who knows? Then got back to Anchorage, took the car back a little dirtier than when we picked it up 5 days ago, and went back to our great hostel (26th Street Hostel again). Although I had received several warnings before boarding my flight bound for Anchorage, Alaska, my usual optimism told me that surely you cant shut a whole state down for 9 months of the year? Surely there would be hostels open, buses and trains that ran and more importantly other tourists than me? Well, for once I was wrong. Alaska is actually hibernating. No buses, no trains, only a few hostels open and definitely no other tourists. On the bright side, I get to experience the grandness of Alaska all to myself. And grand it is. Twice the size of Texas and with towns that you have to drive 600 miles on a gravel road to get to! And that's not it. As we left Seward, we stopped for a patch to add to our collection of the Kenai Peninsula. Then on to the Post Office, we went to pick up our vests from Juneau. Yeah they were there! The first stop was Stoldotna where we had a picnic lunch at a church yard. We were curious about the “fish walks”. The “fish walks” are available for folks to fish without the cost of hiring an outfitter to take them out fishing. The next stop was Kenai.
