Part 1: Atlanta to Rayne, LA Starting mileage was 21749 with clear skies and temperature at 82 degrees. Valerie and I left after lunch and our last minute packing of the freezer and refrigerator food stuff in Rosie II. We spent the first night out at the Roland Cooper State Park in Camden, Alabama having taken the back roads and avoiding the interstate some. The park was nice with wooded spots on a lake; all hook-ups for $19.45 per night. In the morning, we continued to drive through forested, hilly land toward Monroeville. In Monroeville, we stopped to visit the old courthouse that has been turned into a nice museum in honor of both Harper Lee and Truman Capote. The courthouse was the one featured in the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” with Gregory Peck. Apparently, ... read more

Friday morning we left Suwannee River State Park and travelled west to Tallahassee to see my Aunt Suzie, who is not really my aunt, but has been friends with my mother since they were in second grade. She’s always been Aunt Suzie to me. We got to her street and discovered the street was closed, so we drove around the block to see if we could get through to her house. The city was digging a big hole in the street to get to the sewer, but allowed us to get past. It was so good to visit with Aunt Sue, after not seeing her in 40 years or more. We visit some on Facebook and have talked on the phone a time or two, but a good face to face chat was wonderful. We didn’t ... read more

We took our time getting underway this morning, hitting the road around 10. We headed south on Hwy 22 to Shiloh National Military Park on the Tennessee River south of Savannah. The first weekend of April this year will be the 150th anniversary of the battle for Shiloh, in which more than 27,000 soldiers died. The place has a haunted feeling to it. Kerry and I agreed we wouldn't want to camp there. Seeing the gravestones on the hillsides was sobering. From Shiloh we continued south through Corinth and Tupelo in Mississippi, then east on US 78 to Birmingham, AL. We had intended to camp in Jasper, AL, but never found the campground, so we continued on through Birmingham to Calera, AL. We set up the camper in near dark, but managed fairly well, in spite ... read more

We had a one day stop at Theodore, Alabama, and went over to Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island is attached to the mainland by a 5 km bridge, and although seems quite far from restuarants and shopping, was quite heavily populated. Most houses are built on pilons to protect from hurricanes. And what Atlantic Island would be complete without a fort? Fort Gaine was still in respectable condition, and even had an on-site blacksmith to demonstrate his trade. More beautiful shoreline and beaches - the Gulf definitely is a perfect distination if you enjoy laying on the beach, soaking up the sun.... read more

In one week this whole thing will be over. No more English speaking day in day out, no more easy classes, no more nerds&sourpatchkids, no more pace hall, no more chinese people keeping me awake, no more football, no more being ID'd, no more travelling, no more roadtrips... So it's time to look back. Therefor, the following blog will come to you in 9 parts. 1. There's always room for improvement. Though my english is far from bad, it needs work. A lot of work. 2. I have a good home. This may sound kind of odd, but let me explain. I see a lot of people here who have to leave and wish they could stay. Not that I blame them, because Troy is amazing. But I miss my friends, my family, my dorm,... even ... read more

I have to shut up here a lot. I'm not the type of person that ever shuts up, so it just means that I don't say what I really mean. It means that I'm being a hypocrite most of the time. That's why this blog isn't very full either. I'm afraid I might insult someone. So many people are reading this & so many different nationities, that there's always someone who could get insulted by what I say. Because I know all of you, back home - the only time you think I'm funny is when I'm actually being mean. So that's why I have to write this blog in an "So then we went to panama city beach & then we rode on jetski's & then I swam with dolphins"-kinda style. I did do all ... read more

Most of today was spent travelling. I was scheduled to depart for New Orleans, although I wouldn’t get there until tomorrow morning. So I thought it would be a good idea to stop by Huntsville to see one of my friends from the internet, called Will. I left my hostel in Nashville at 7:30am and made for my bus leaving at 8. It would be a two-hour ride to Huntsville. I stopped in Athens and grabbed a cheeseburger. Yes, Athens in Alabama, not Greece. Once I got to Huntsville, I contacted Will and he came to pick me up in his car. Good to meet him; another one who I’ve known for quite a long time over the internet. About four or so years. The first place we went to was the Space Centre. I knew ... read more

What a delightful surprise after arriving at the Wharf with large floating docks and lots of room to maneuver. There are many huge yachts at this marina. Our first night there we treated ourselves to one of their more famous restaurants, Ginny Lane. We discovered on our walk the next morning that the Wharf is quite a place. It would remind you a bit of the Smoke House Bay spot in Marco only about 4 times as large. However, other than the services available at the Wharf not much else is in walking distance. There is a large condo development and an even bigger shopping complex complete with a huge movie house, convention center, ferris wheel and lots of stores and restaurants. Unfortunately, with the economic situation many of the stores and restaurants are empty, but ... read more

Our Saturday was a planned shorter day crossing Mobile Bay. The Mobile Harbor is a very busy industrial port with large ships and barges everywhere. Once a little past this industrial part the skyline of Mobile appeared in the distance. After passing the Downtown Convention Center we saw a huge Carnival Cruise Ship, Elation. It sure made our little PDQ look tiny. Mobile Bay is very good size, much larger than Charlotte Harbor and busy with barges, large fishing ships. I was impressed with the hundreds of birds that diligently followed the fishing vessels. Incredible sight. We found our way to Dog River and nestled easily (nearly) into a slip. Thankfully our boat is only 17ft wide and with Cap't Roger's superior driving skills, we were tied up without issue. Time to give a little credit ... read more

At the request of several Singaporean (and Singapore-based) friends, I've decided to write about my adventures here in Alabammy for interested parties. I figure this is just as much a cultural experience as anywhere abroad I've lived, and deserves equal attention. So here goes... I arrived in Alabama late at night, but kindly greeted at the airport by one of the grad students in my lab. I never like arriving in a new place after dark because it always feels less welcoming than friendly sunshine, and my arrival into Tuscaloosa wasn’t really eased by the billboard I saw warning against the ill effects of crystal meth on my appearance…hmmm…they need billboards to remind people here of that? Luckily, the next days were bright and sunny, and my first two weeks in Alabama have been filled with ... read more
