On the Road Again, Heading South

We took our time getting underway this morning, hitting the road around 10. We headed south on Hwy 22 to Shiloh National Military Park on the Tennessee River south of Savannah. The first weekend of April this year will be the 150th anniversary of the battle for Shiloh, in which more than 27,000 soldiers died. The place has a haunted feeling to it. Kerry and I agreed we wouldn't want to camp there. Seeing the gravestones on the hillsides was sobering.

From Shiloh we continued south through Corinth and Tupelo in Mississippi, then east on US 78 to Birmingham, AL. We had intended to camp in Jasper, AL, but never found the campground, so we continued on through Birmingham to Calera, AL. We set up the camper in near dark, but managed fairly well, in spite of the fact that we haven't camped in a year and a half. When Kerry turned on the water, we found a major leak, so no water in the camper tonight. We'll fix it tomorrow.

All in all, a quite pleasant day with warm temperatures and very little rain. At least until this evening. It's raining fairly steadily now, but hopefully will quit by morning.

John and I fly to Miami on Jan 14 and will be in the Keys until Jan 26. Any chance our paths will cross? We'd love to see you two and catch up. We'll have both cell phones and laptop with us, so we'll be "connected".
