Weather was fine & clear this morning, and after breakfast in our Hotel we were on our way by around 9.45AM heading into Sweet Home Alabama. Short drive today only about 200km to a place called Huntsville. It’s known as Rocket City as it was here in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s that America’s space programme was based. They have a place called the US Space & Rocket Centre which has more artifacts than they have at Cape Canaveral in Florida where all the launches now take place. We arrived in Huntsville around 12 Noon and decided to have lunch before going to the space centre. We had seen this place called Cracker Barrell about 20 times on this road trip so we thought we’d give it a try. Inside is a gift shop with ... read more

We're on the road again!!! We left Brighton on the 26th, and decided to go a bit west to avoid some of the winter weather south and east. Interstate 69 to 65 brought us to the south on clear roads with lots of sunshine. The last trace of snow was in Birmingham, AL - Ron gets credit for seeing the first armadillo (a live one) and I get the first palm tree sighting. So far only a few things we realize we left behind - most importantly my earplugs! I had a set especially made so I wouldn't smother Ron with a pillow some night when the snoring got too bad. Kris is mailing it so he will live to snore another night. We are at Gulf Shores State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Lovely park, ... read more

Well, I never expected this to happen, but that just goes to show how unexpected life can be. When I left the crane ranch, I was quite sad and hated leaving because I was worried that I might never get to come back and see all those people again. Then, just a little over 2 months after leaving Mississippi, I got a call from Lauren telling me I could have a job at Bon Secour helping the biologist there, if I wanted it. So, totally unexpectedly, following Thanksgiving I found myself once again making the drive down to the gulf coast, this time to Gulf Shores Alabama. So far it has been quite lovely. The house I am living in on the refuge is insane, there is simply no other way to describe it. It is ... read more

Epilogue December 2010 The Marilsnick had made it; captain and crew were elated. There had been highlights and “lowlights” during our journey. The highlights were the 18-hour crossing of the Gulf of Mexico at night, the crossing of Lake Okeechobee, the endless but beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, my vacation onboard when Skip and Barb ran the boat, the entering of New York Harbor with my siblings, the vacation on land at the cottage of cousin Marianne Duenhoelter and the scenic wild Georgian Bay and Northern Channel, the camaraderie with other Loopers and finally returning to Dog River after having completed the Loop. The “lowlights” were the accident in St. Augustine at the Bridge of Lions and the two groundings. Problems, which I had to overcome were an unexplained weight loss of twenty pounds, which according to my ... read more

(Shocco Springs) How can it be December 2nd??? Boy the days go by fast. This has been such a wonderful project, and today it ended. There was a SOWER team at Shocco when we arrived, and before they left, a week later, we prayed for them. A second SOWER team came a week before we left, and before we pulled out today, they circled up and prayed for us! It’s times like that that remind us what it’s really about. Shocco has a four year project remodeling rooms and offices. The men have been working in the motel rooms. We ran out of laundry to fold, so we spent one day painting bathrooms in four of the rooms. It was fun to see what they’re doing, and be part of it. For one day. Then we ... read more

Sunday, 28 November, 2010 After fueling up and paying for dock fees, we left the marina around 8:40. The sun was shining, but it was still windy and cool. Heading out the Dog River channel, there was a light chop, maybe 1-2’. Not bad, we thought, but we were in the lee of a point of land. By the time we reached the ship channel, it was choppy, the waves were 2-3’ and on our beam. That means from the side, so we were really rocking and rolling, and not in a musical way. The further south we traveled down the ship channel, the rougher it became. We had to tack like a sailboat to take the waves on our bow and stern. After only 6 miles (and 2 hours) we had to do something. Turning ... read more

We got up this morning to cloudy skies, breezy, but still pretty warm. What happened to that cold front that was supposed to move in last night? While we were still drinking our morning coffee, the wind shifted, the temperature dropped and in came the front. Sara had been talking since yesterday about renting a tank and diving down to check out her propellar, but the weather was so nasty and the nearest dive shop 15 miles away. She and Trevor discussed and thought and finally decided it was worth the money to have the boat hauled out so they could thoroughly check for damage. It was scary and tricky moving the boat in the strong wind with poor handling, but they managed to get the boat over to the lift. Once the boat was out ... read more

It was most enjoyable to spend a night with our daughter and grand children and the next day, early morning off to New Johnsonville. It was a beautiful day for travelling. Everything was fine on Trusty III and the next day was a cleanup day. Nous avons quitté Pebble Isle Marina, le vendredi le 12 par un soleil radieux et des températures presque d’été et apprécié notre première journée de navigation sur la rivière Tennessee. Ce fut de courte durée et l’automne fait ... read more

Thursday, 25 November, 2010 Happy Thanksgiving to all. We are in Mobile, happily tied up at Grand Mariner Marina on the Dog River at the western edge of Mobile Bay. But I get ahead of myself. This morning we watched as Trevor and Sara wrestled a tree that had floated up against their boat. It had to be 25’ long and stuck out both sides of their boat and was against their anchor rope. The trip through the industrial and maritime sections of Mobile was not nearly as bad as it could have been. Since it was Thanksgiving morning, most everything was shut down, just a few tugs and tows were moving. I imagine that on a normal day, it can be pretty intimidating cruising in that area with all the big ships and tows. We ... read more

Wednesday, 24 November, 2010 We thought today would be another busy tow day, but we really only passed one on the river and a few have passed the bayou where we’re anchored. By the way, I’ve been told I need to explain tows. On inland waterways tug boats push barges filled with whatever and all strung together. On the Mississippi they may be 5 barges wide and 7 long, on the Tennessee they’re usually 3 wide and 5 long, but on the Tombigbee it appears they are up to 3 wide, but usually only 3 long, I guess due to the twisty nature of the river, as they are pretty awkward to turn. Anyway, the tugs and the barges together are called a tow, even though the tug pushes the barges not pulls. Is that clear ... read more
