We didn't spend much time in Nashville, but the time we did spend was great. Our hosts, Bradley and Franchesa were great, Bradley helped plan where we're going to travel through the Gran Canyon and also told us about the free concert that we went to 'live on the green'. If you ever get the chance to, Nashville's well worth a visit. The town's really pretty and it's like walking through your very own little musical. We got to see Marie Hines, Brett Dennen, Rayland Baxter, also Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. None of which we had heard of, most we enjoyed. Having to pay for accommodation is sad :-( especially when you book into a totally crap hostel, it totally sucks..... We arrived in New Orleans at 5.30 am and couldn't check in until 2pm ... read more

Actually, this afternoon we stopped about 15 miles north of Mobile Bay for the night. We're at Big Bayou South Canot. It is a wide channel, clearly marked just off the Mobile River. A fast fishing boat passes every once in a while. We are enjoying snacks on the flybridge with a lovely gentle breeze. I'm thinking we should have packed a fishing pole. Instead, we'll conger up some less interesting grub. Last night we stayed at Lock 1 anchorage and were joined by a sailboat, Visitor and her two mates. They quickly anchored while we struggled to make sure our stern achor held. It is amazing to us that we can be so tired at the end of the day (after not doing much but steering and looking). Rog, for the first time is transferring ... read more

Lazy Days at Demopolis Yacht Basin As we approached Demopolis the name reminded me of Greece and Greek Food, maybe a bit like Tarpon Springs, Fl. WRONG!!!! This sleepy little city is very southern, very, very southern. We settled in on Sunday and borrowed the loner car to go for dinner. WRONG!!! Most restaurants in this neck of the woods are closed on Sunday. We managed a meager meal and returned for an evening of TV (a luxury). WRONG!!! You plug the cable in and get three stations; cartoons, cartoons and one PBS station (not bad except that they play the same show 15 times in a row. Monday morning called for a trip around the marina. Interesting folk, some in transit to places south, one to places north and some just there (for years). Everyone ... read more

Geo: 33.5203, -86.8115Leaving Asheville, even though it was going in the wrong direction, I decided to head southeast toward Spartanburg, South Carolina in order to do a quick sweep through some of the southern states. The moment I passed into this new state was a beautiful one - a passing rainstorm just starting to dissolve, revealing ghastly forms of footless mountains off in the distance. Greens and blues of all shades and everywhere in between, accented in a thin veil of moisture hovering in the atmosphere.Within a few minutes, however, I was back in the rainstorm. The kind where even the highest wiper speed can hardly keep up. A few minutes after that... THWACK!!! What the...? Ah, damnit - a rock had been spit up into my windshield, creating a new little spider web, adding to ... read more

What a lovely day. We landed a lock only minutes from the Columbus Marina. They aren't quite as deep any more, so the drop is quicker. Our first stop was the Bevill Museum and the Steam Paddle Boat, The Montgomery. It was used to snag trees and limbs from the waterways. Beautifully restored mansion. Once again, our next lock was only minutes away. Today we traveled 55 miles from Columbus to Sumpter Landing. This leg of the trip had more barges coming and going in both directions. Also, more weekend fisherman in fast flats boats. The Sumpter Landing Anchorage was quite beautiful and very quiet. Scads of bluejays darting in and around the trees. Pretty water flowers circled the anchorage. Of course, Buddy was more than happy to get to shore. Dinner on board: seasoned salmon, ... read more

We're off and running (about 7 knots/hr) and it seems like we're standing still. We decided to travel slower and enjoy more of the scenery. After fueling up at our last marina (60 gal) we should be in good shape to get to Demopolis. We will pass through about 12 locks and may take a few days at this pace. OK, I'm attempting to put up some photos. If it works you can come along vicariously.... read more

Since the last time I wrote, we went to a zoo. It was completely different from Belgium zoo's, starting with the fact that most animals were just held in cages. The monkey were said to have a sugar & diabetes problem... Which isn't hard if you are going to feed them marshmellows, chips & cola as a way to entertain the audience. You know the scene when Dudley Dursley was knocking on the snake's window saying "MOVE STUPID!"? I guess he should have been an American because apparently that is what they do. Anyway. I love monkeys, tigers & lions so I was happy to be there. I proved that I wasn't too chicken to hold a snake, so that's a good thing I guess? + There's were no ostriches. Good things happen every day! Last ... read more

We decided to take a leisurely southerly swing to visit friends and family in Alabama and Florida. As mentioned in an earlier blog, my former boss, Ellen, and her husband Dennis, had retired to Double Springs, Alabama, in the northwestern part of the state. They were a prime influence on our decision to retire in AL and we have enjoyed visiting them on several occasions. I had finally gotten an appointment with a dermatologist for mid-September and we suggested since the doctor was in Cullman, about half way between us, that they could meet us for lunch after my appointment. Ellen countered with "Why not come spend a few days here before the appointment?" That was not a difficult decision to make, as we had stayed previously in June and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So we packed ... read more

Kim has wanted to come down since before we moved. She had seen pictures, heard stories and really hoped to see our new home in Alabama. But when I retired, Kim got a new job (still with the government and in WV) at about the same time and had been working hard to learn new skills. She and Trish are best of friends as well as mother and daughter so it's been hard on both. Then add to the mix, Kris (Kim's significant other) started back to school for advanced degree and is just getting his Healing Arts Center going, so it was going to be hard for him as well. Finally, after a lot of, well--whining--from mother, Kim found a long weekend when she could get reasonably priced plane tickets and she made plans to ... read more

... Just don't make it a biscuits one. It started at 4.30, me, Inge, Antonio, Sofie, Harpa, Dan, Chirs & Mads got into the bus that drove us to the Montgomery biscuits stadion. We hardly knew what to expect.. Baseball, sure, but how big would the stadium be, where would are seats be, would it be a good game or not? If we had only known. We got there an hour early, right on time to eat & drink something before getting to our seats. The stadium wasn't that big, so row 1, where we sat, was actually right on the field, just seperated by a brick wall. The food we ate was expensive & not very good, let's keep it at that, before I start being rude. (I'm saving up rudeness to describe the game, ... read more
