Day 5 We woke up this morning bright and early with no real plan of what we wanted to do. One thing was for certain though, we had no cash. We headed out to the bank to withdraw some money. This seemingly simple task took us 45 minutes, it wasn’t until the 4th bank of trying that we actually managed to get some cash. At first we slightly concerned by our inability to get money but it later became apparent that there was an issue with some of banks connecting to our UK account. It ended up being fine, there so many banks along Avenue Tulum in downtown Cancun you will always find one that works. We had a great morning lazily walking around the local markets, ignoring the persistent sellers. Heather loves markets the world ... read more

It has been almost two years since I first embarked on the trip which took me from the US to Colombia and, finally, to Mexico. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that, during the four and a half months in which I was away, I woke up happy every day. For various reasons, I never finished the final blog entry, which chronicled my last two weeks in Mexico. In that time, I travelled to Valladolid, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. My flight home on December 18th 2012 left from Cancún, a place which I managed to avoid pretty well, bar the extortionate taxi journey from the ferry dock to the airport after I reluctantly left the gorgeous island which was my home for my final few days in a country which I had ... read more

Hope this blog finds everyone healthy and happy! We've heard the weather at home has been incredible. That's awesome!! Hard to believe. We have had a quiet week just puttering around doing our usual island stuff. The island is just hopping right now due to Semana Sanata (Easter). Groves of Mexicans from the mainland are here to celebrate. The holiday extends from the week before Easter and the week after. The majority of Mexicans are catholic so Easter is an important time for them. The beaches are just packed wtih Mexican families enjoying themselves. They brings pots of ceviche, taco fillings, gauacamole etc. and coolers of drinks and just plop themselves down for a day of fiesta!! Tourists like us are dwindling in numbers as the high season draws to an end. We were talking to ... read more

Hola Los Amigos!! Not much to report this week other than our usual relaxed island life routine. Walking, biking, beaching, swimming, shopping, reading, snorkelling, enjoying margaritas, playing dominoes and cards and practising our spanish with the locals pretty well sums up a typical day on Isla for us! Consequently, this blog will be mostly pictures. On Monday we rented a golf cart and bombed around the island checking out new places and old favourite places. We were very surprised at all the new beautiful casas that have been built on the east and west coasts since we were here two years ago. There must be a lot of Americans and Canadians who live here semi permanently by the looks of these new stunning homes. We made a stop at Garrafon Castilla which is a quaint little ... read more

It is great to be back on Isla!! This is our sixth visit to the island and 4th time back our same hotel - Chac Chi Suites. It's kind of like going to the lake as we are very familiar with the island and have gotten to know many of the locals through the years. It's amazing that most of them remember us from two years ago and we just pick up like we never left!! Even though the island is much the same there have been many improvements and changes since we were here two years ago. Most of the changes are good however we hope that with progress it won't lose the small island feel. The roads and sidewalks have all had a facelift along with new pathways, statues and monuments. There are also ... read more
