2 weeks on Isla Mujeres, where Rachael (a uni friend of Cheryl's) joined us from sunny Huddersfield,, and within 3 days was browner than either of us! .. Isla Mujeres is a really chilled, quiet little island just off the coast of Cancun (which we visited for one day to do some chores, and is horrible.. unless you like McDonalds, rows of big hotels, and lots of Americans!).. Had an amazing day yesterday snorkling with whale sharks.. $US115 for the day: boat, guide, food, water, beers etc, so not cheap, but a fantastic experience.. they are HUGE! .. we took a tiny (and bumpy!) boat out past Isla Holbox through the rain clouds and into what looked like a storm.. and floated around in the sea looking for these huge creatures.. As we arrived at their ... read more

It seems like ages since I last wrote and so much has happened since Henry left it is pretty hard to know where to begin… I moved into the hostel on Isla Mujeres to stay there until my flight to Cuba. On the first night I met a whole load of girls from Edinburgh and went out for a few drinks with them and Simon. They had rented a golf cart for the day and so thought that being lazy we would drive around rather than walking. The barman of the club told us about a house party on the other side of the island and we thought we'd go and check it out. On leaving the club however there was a small problem…the golf cart was gone. After wandering around for a few minutes we ... read more

On Sunday we spent the entire day lounging by the pool. I didn't think I would enjoy as much as I did ... maybe it was the swim-up bar :-) We slept and swam ALOT. Although we used sunblock, it must have washed off. I have brightly colored and sore shoulders today (ugh). It was well worth it though. Today, we took a day trip to Isla Majueres. It was ok (just ok) -- we spent the day on the beach and went into the main town for a short shopping trip. We witnessed an accident with one of our tour mates running a rented moped into a car. Lots of drama while they sorted out the accident, and almost got arrested. Fortunately, it seemed to get worked out. We came back this evening and just ... read more

This road leads no place I've ever been Off to what I thought was a late start on my second day, I went downstairs in the hostel to pay for another night of accomodation only to find out that was only 10:30. I headed around the corner from the hostel to grab a bite to eat. Coffee, Oranje juice, toast, beans, Mexican eggs, tortillas, and a coke for around 45 pesos. From there I headed across Av Tulum to catch a collectivo. Collectivos are minivans that will pic up just about anyone going anywhere. The 15 minute drive to the port went quickly. Today I was headed to Puerto Juarez on a longer journey out to Isla Mujeres (Island of Women). The roundtrip ferry was 70 pesos and only takes about 20 minutes as Mujeres is ... read more

Hello everyone. I've moved on from Guatemala and now I'm in Mexico. I went from Xela (Quetzaltenango), the point of my last entry, to the famed Semuc Champey. Semuc champey is a series of beautiful turqouise pools flowing through a natural bridge under which the raging river Kan-Ba flows. But better than the pools are the nearby cave. The cave has a river flowing through it so we had to swim with candles. There were some massive caverns in it with waterfalls and rocks that we could climb around on and jump off. There were also some really tight squeezes with just about a foot of room between the water and the ceiling. The cave tour was by far the best 30 Quetzales I've ever spent. I took a very long bus ride from there to ... read more

I arrived at the airport in Cancun at around 12:30 local time. I was easily able to use the ATM to get money and I had no problems getting a bus to downtown Cancun to the bus station, where I caught a local bus to Puerto Juarez, where I took a ferry to Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres seems like sort of a typical Mexican tourist town, with shops selling beach stuff and supposedly authentic artifacts. I was able to get a cheap meal for around 25 pesos and had a nice conversation with the woman that ran the restaurant. I checked into the hostel and promptly slept for a couple of hours, as I had gotten only two or three hours of sleep the night before. When I woke up, there was salsa music playing in ... read more

Did I say one more trip? I should have known better. When October finished we loaded up and headed south to Grants Pass and Mike’s family. I dropped Mike off and headed north to The Dalles where mom was scheduled for a knee replacement. The timing was right for us and I was able to be there for her for family support and as caregiver once she got out of the hospital and the rehab facility. I am pleased to say she is now 100% mobile and pain free. I spent Thanksgiving with my family and Mike with his. Christmas we were actually together in Grants Pass. Mike & I had both been fighting off colds for a couple of weeks and Mike was recovering from hernia surgery which meant no lifting so we decided to ... read more
