If you are in Oaxaca, you have 4 choices where to go next : Puerto escondido, San Cristóbal de las casas, Mexico City or Pueblos Mancomunados. Most people I met came from Mexico City, Puebla or San Cristóbal de las casa to Oaxaca and went from there with a van or a night bus in a 7 hours ride on a very bad road to Puerto escondido. If you want a few days to relax, enjoy the sun and the sea side, that’s the place to go. If you would rather do something a little more adventurous, more nature and hiking, then you should definitely go to Pueblos Mancomunados. There are different recommandations where to go and how to get there. Lonely Planet says you should go to Sierra Norte expeditions in Oaxaca and book a ... read more

My first stop in Pueblos Mancomunados was Cuajimoloyas. I arrived there at around 11 AM (1h from Oaxaca to Tlacolula, 1h from Tlacolula to Cuajomoloyas) and the first thing I did was rent a room in a cabaña compartida and check out the tours they offer. If you want to hike in Cuajimoloyas, you have to hire a guide for 2 reasons : 1) you would get utterly and completely lost without one, since there are no road indications and you have to cross many private grounds ; 2) you would miss all the interesting information about the local stories, the fauna and flora there. In Cuajimoloyas, there are 5 hikes you can do : Canyón del Coyote (+/- 3 h : ... read more

I promised a certain Dave and Wendy that I wound finish blogging about my travels in Mexico AGES ago; and to be honest, I have had a really difficult time coming up with the words that would end that chapter in my life. I returned home with mixed feelings about everything I had experienced over the previous year. In fact, I am still working through my thoughts and feelings. My foundations were rocked. My beliefs were questioned. My understandings of “self” and “community” were shifted. I came home with an unsatisfied feeling; like I had this pit in my stomach that I couldn’t get rid of but I didn’t know exactly what it was. I wanted to help; but I felt helpless. I wanted to be able to pray; but I didn’t see its effectiveness. I ... read more

I had a pet spider once. His name was Jorge. Well, I guess I can’t technically use the term ‘pet’; he was more of an acquaintance who I had a good cohabiting relationship with. Jorge and I agreed upon two things: 1. That he could live in my room as long as he never left the window sill, and 2. That he could eat as many ants as he wanted. This arrangement worked out nicely for both us. You see, I hate ants. They are horrible disgusting critters. A spider, with its 8 legs and more then enough eyes, is creepy but at least, in most cases, it works well independently. Ants, on the other hand, work in colonies. COLONIES. That’s a lot of ants. That’s a lot of ants. One bite may not hurt for ... read more

Alright. It is time to bite the bullet. It is getting something started that often seems to be the hardest thing. That is definitely true about this blog entry. I have been putting it off and putting it off because I know it will take so long to update you all on all the amazing things that have been happening down here in the last 2 months. But there is this darn Catch 22 happening where the longer I wait to update, the more I have to write about. Darn time and passing by so quickly! Things here have been progressing. A lot of changes have happened in the last couple of months. I’m sure as I write this out and have the experiences of the last couple months in text, I will realize how much ... read more

This blog entry has been constructing itself in my brain for weeks now. It’s amazing how sometimes you feel like you have so much time yet somehow the days just keep zipping past you without allowing you to accomplish what you had set out to do. It doesn’t matter how many minutes you try to save; the greedy day will find a way to use them up. When groups are here, it feels as if all of my minutes are gobbled up by the team members – I am constantly dictating what to do, where to go, how to sleep, what to eat, and (with a smile of course) responding to any other question one might come up with. When not directly with the team, I spend my alone time worried that they will find me ... read more

I have to say, it is hard to believe it is March 1. At times it feels like I just got here, and at other times it feels like I have been here for a while now. Everything here seems to be falling into more and more of a routine. Devotions at 8, tasks in the morning, snack, work, lunch, pick up the kids, go to the post office, translate, avoid Spanish homework, end up doing Spanish homework and then depending on the night, the evening activities kick in. Following that, Leah and I sit down, enjoy some fake Oreos and watch an episode of How I Met You Mother on my ever aging laptop before crawling into our bunk beds (which we continually hit our heads on) and passing out for the evening. Sounds fun ... read more

Well the entry title says it all! I am officially exhausted! It has been quite the week. The last time I updated, we had the KBC group arrive and at work here in the home. That was nice to have some familiar faces here - but also very busy! Leah is working as the groups coordinator, but while they are here, I am along for the ride in helping with their weekend touring and night time activity. This group was really good in terms of what they were doing at night because often they just did their group devotionals and headed to bed. But last weekend was definitely full - and fun! Last Saturday we ventured over to Monte Alban which is one of the largest and most well preserved Zapotec ruins in the area (or ... read more

I am currently reading the One Year NLT Bible on my Kobo e-reader (which I was very nicely given by some FANTASTIC friends at Christmas time…thanks Amber, Jaco and Susan. I love it!). Through this version, the entire Bible has been split up into 365 days; thus, my plan is to read it all in the time that I am here. According to my Kobo, as of today, I have read 10% of my Bible…which also means that we are 10% through the year! It’s weird to think of it like that. We are 1/10th through the year AND have already passed our 1 month mark since our arrival in Oaxaca on January 6th. I can hardly believe that we have been here for 5 weeks...FIVE WEEKS! And yet, it’s starting to feel a little like ... read more

It's amazing the effect that watching television can have on your perception of the world and day-to-day activites. On the positive side, it can make you more knowledgeable about certain events, nations, animals, etc. but it can also decensitize you to such things as murder, human remains, war, and many others. I noticied this more this week while paying attention to my reaction to various events that I experienced. I wasn't shocked or appauled at seeing a full display of human bones, I wasn't disgusted when shown an infected appendix that the hospital and, while visiting the Oaxacan prison, all I could think about was how an inmate might try to escape. Bones The television series 'Bones' is a recent discovery of mine. I purchased Seasons 1 through 4 when they were on sale this past ... read more
