Wanting to see more small town life I hopped on to a bus to the above with no real idea of what was there. Two hours later, up a slow road I reached the town and it´s community ran tourist office. I said I wanted to do some trekking and after paying 50pesos for some reason and armed with a basic handrawn map they drove me to the entrance. The track seemed basically a farm track, and although it was all very natural and attractive, it seemed to lack any particular focus to make it more than pleasant. A little dismayed over why I had to pay money to walk what seemed a public road and get no real information, thoughts ran through my mind on how to add a bit of adventure to it. I ... read more

In the morning I got a bus out the town of Mitla, best known for its ruins mixed into the towns. However there was also some kind of religous event going on at the time, which I had probably suspect was the Guadalope (excuse the spelling) celebrations in hindsight, though I don´t recall the exact date. I had already noted the Mexicans had a bit of a soft spot for the old Virgin Mary, with Jesus not seeming as popular figure to depict. Maybe the image of a caring mother over a guy in agony slowly dying is preferable. Anyway this was obviously a big event with little boys dressed in Judo like outfits with moustaches drawn on and the girls with long colourful dresses and little baskets. It was all very cute. The whole town ... read more

The bus rode through some beautiful landscape en route to Oaxaca, glorious mountainous landscape, with cacti taking the place of trees. After a while the land flattened and lost some of its interest. At this point my mind drifted on how to liven up my trip a bit. Slow progress with the Spanish had been frustrating me, which so many of my plans and options revolved around. Uncertainty over what to do about work and a general concern about spending too much time and money drifting from city to city and not seeing the more interesting and less accessible places. I had written a travelling philosphy to which I want to obey to make the most of my trip, I think I´m a little way off at the moment and I need to rectify the situation, ... read more

Oaxaca is a picturesque colonial town, it has several churches, markets and squares surrounded by typical Mexican buildings and cafes. When we were there the main square was full of Christmas poinsettias which seemed strange in the heat. During our short stay we went to visit the nearby Mayan temples of Monte Alban. They were smaller and more 'ruined' than those of Teotihuacan but they were also less crowded with tourists and therefore felt a bit more authentic.... read more

Thursday, 27 Oct On plane We left home at 2 pm to travel by bus to the airport. We bought a sandwich from Subway to eat for dinner since Air Canada doesn't serve meals any more. The Air Canada plane to Los Angeles left on time at 5:40 pm. The weather had been good today, but the rain clouds were coming in as we left and the forecast was rain every day for the next week - a good time to be leaving. It took three hours to L.A., where we had to change terminals to the international terminal. This was the most depressing place - dark and dingy. But all of a sudden, it was like you were already in a different country - on the plane down from Vancouver (unlike when we go to ... read more

It´s really nice being in Oaxaca city since it has fast internet! Cheap too! This was a good update for the blog. We visted Monte Albon this morning, it worked out pretty well because we had thought it was an all day thing and were a bit worried when we slept in and realized we were all really hungover. Jord looked in the mirror and realized in the heat of the party I had coaxed him into shaving his beard into this weird goatee thing! Yes! Victory! I remember waking up this morning to Jord attempting to fight the mutant moth that was so far beyond anything we´ve ever seen we´re pretty sure it was actually an albatross in the bathroom. God it was quite something, I ended up slaying it after someone actually locked the ... read more

So we arrived in Oaxaca city last night, way later than we thought. Had a really weird day and night and evening in the bus, San Poncho to La Puenita (sp?) to Guadalajara, to Mexico City, to Oaxaca City... it was all a blur. Except for waking up in Mexico city freezing cold because for some reason at 5am in the mountains they have air conditioning on? Really cold, i had my arms in my shirt basically in the fetal position trying to keep warm, but it was worth it to wake up and laugh at Jord & Ryan doing the same thing. Anyways, we had a GREAT day in Mexico city sitting in the bus depot slowly dying from the pollution. But then we got on the bus for Oaxaca city and realized it was ... read more

Well, this will probably be my last blog from Oaxaca. I am leaving for Chiappas Sun night. Back to the joys of the overnight buses (the triple threat for those of you in the know). The topic of todays blog, boys and girls, is family in Oaxaca. Well, as you probably know, I have been living with a very nice, helpful family here in Oaxaca. Its been quite a trip though, with the small details. For instance, about 7 people seem to live in this small house, bc the son and his wife and their son are staying there so that the four year old can attend a special school here in Oaxaca. They all live in this small room in the front. There there are the senor and senora, who pretty much take care of ... read more

Hello all, Well, I´m back in Oaxaca after a wonderfully relaxing weekend away to this tiny town called Ixtlan. It is up in the mountains. I went with Erica and her friend Radie came for one night. It was pretyt funny because we were going to go to another town, but we waited for the bus that was supposed to come at 4·30 for aboiut 45 minutes and finally decided to go to Ixtlan instead. This really nice Senora kept telling us that everyday the bus comes at 4·30, but then, around 4·45 or so, she was like, well, some times it comes at 4·10, or 4·20. We were like, alright, let´s just go to Ixtlan. Since we really hadn´t planned our trip at all, it made it easy to switch locations. (Later in this blog ... read more

Well, I am almost finished with my first week of classes. Just thought I´d put on a quick update to let everyone know how things are going. First off, thanks Daveed, for my first comment on the blog! I didn´t realize that I had a comment waiting to accept, so that´s why it wasn´t up there. I guess one of my enemies could write a comment on there that I don´t want published. Anyhoo, things are starting to feel normal for me. I have settled into a routine with my family. They are very nice to me, and make an effort to speak to me a lot so that I can practice my spanish and also make me feel welcome. Of course, I continue to speak in the wrong tense, wrong person, wrong gender. But, I´m ... read more
