After leaving Mexico City we made our way south with a brief stop in a town called Puebla to break up the trip. Puebla is known for its pottery and has a very pretty colonial centre with lots of tiled buildings and bright colours! We were particularly impressed with the ceramic wine vats complete with stands and taps - perfect for your house in France dad but I´m afraid they were too big to carry! Didn´t do much whilst we were there, although looking back on it we seemed to have spent most of our time eating: Puebla is also known for its food, in particular a chilli/chocolate sauce for meat dishes and a stuffed chilli dish that is all the colours of the Mexican flag! After our food-fest we made our way down to Oaxaca ... read more

I keep feeling the urge to leave places, by Tuesday I was in need of relocation from Taxco. Back to original plan of coast line, but which one. I've never been good at making decisions, with a book full of options it's not making it any easier. It brings to mind a quote that goes something like this, "If you don't know where you are going, all roads lead to your destination" Lewis Carroll. It flashed by me some time on the internet and I thought, yep that relates to me. So in the end I decided to head to another city, Oaxaca City and not the coast at all. It is on route but a diversion none the less. I arrive in the evening, getting out of the taxi some what confuse as there are ... read more

We left Oaxaca to catch the bus down to a little village on the coast called Mazunte. After an interesting 6 hour bus journey up and down a mountain range with bald tyres and a driver who seemed to think that braking was an insult to his machismo despite the torrential rain (with our bags strapped on the roof!) we finally arrived at the beach. There were just a few places to stay, mainly hammocks or rooms with one double bed, and so we took the first place that we could find with two beds...despite the fact that it looked like a prison cell and was so hot that any movement meant that you were dripping in sweat. Nice. We wandered around for a bit and found a much better place overlooking the beach that was ... read more

Friends, In case you hadn´t heard already, the other morning the massive teacher strike that has been occurring since late May took a turn for the worst when police stormed the zocalo with the hopes of removing them. Below is a narrative written by a UNM Professor who witnessed first-hand the events that took place. It has been my experience that the teacher's strike has caused some tension within Oaxaca. On the onehand I admire the teachers for sitting and sleeping in the streets of the Zocalo and surrounding areas and fighting for what they believe in. On the other hand, Oaxacan residents say that the teachers are spoiled, earn 7-10 times the average wage of Oaxacan residents while working only 4 hours a day. In fact many people have told me that many teachers would ... read more

I learned many things in my visit to Mexico City. First, it is far from Oaxaca by car- six or seven hours. It is the same drive time as from Los Angeles to Berkely. I heard the story about the geography of Mexico. It is said that when ... read more
