Saturday we took a bus to Cholula, an old religious city near Puebla. We didn’t have much time at all so the only place we visited was what looks like a large hill with a big orange Spanish church on top. In reality, however, the hill is the largest pyramid in the world, but in order to excavate it they had to built tunnels over the pyramid and grass grew over it so now it looks like a hill. We took a tour through the tunnels and saw the ruins on the other side of the pyramid. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go inside the church. After Cholula we had to hurry to check out of our hotel already and take the 4 hour bus ride to Oaxaca. When we arrived we were all extremely ... read more

Ok, for this entry im gona do something i dont usually do. be honest. the ruins in mexico are everywhere, supposedly leftovers from ancient civilizations who worked very hard to put them up for some reason i still dont know. So here we are, 2000 years later, and we find some ruins. we decide to put a gate round them, a ticket machine at the entrance and charge to go see, up to here its ok with me. what ticks me off is the faery tale they tell us with every ruin. they are not ruins at all! they are rebuilt completely to make the whole tourist experience much better, then they fence of all theve rebuilt to make us believe it could fall. if it does, just rebuild it again you morons! next to every ... read more

We arrived with la bala to oaxaca. the journey is worth mentioning because we discovered what a crap car we had bought. la bala lost all the oil from the gear box and fucked it up.$400 bill and news that the engine was about to fail. Fucking car salesmen in mexico, they are worst than lawyers! anyway, we arrive with the three girls we met in mexico hostel. Angie, Sabrina and mariana. cool girls who were brave enough to come with us in our car. still dont understand... but from brave acts like theese, cool things happen. Oaxaca is a beautifull city, one of the best so far. we arrived just after a revolution had happened. apparently, the governor of oaxaca, ulises is a pedophile and a dickhead. the teachers demanded a rise in salary and ... read more

First to the Thursday market in Etla, a fraction of the Tlacolula market, but delightful, with the most beautiful local vegetables and fruit, and pottery. Then the entire afternoon on the mesa of Monte Albán, one of Mesoamerica's most incredible Zapotec ruins. Words and even the images don't do it justice; the expansive space and massive structures are stunning rock constructions, perched on the top of a mountain that dominates the valley below. It exhudes a power and a mystery, 'facts' are few, and even they are open to dispute. A thunder storm was moving in from the west, adding to the drama.... read more

The VW bug is not red, and it's just as well. Although lime-cream green is still pretty visible. We are hitting the country roads to tiny villages where kids run away when they see Tim! I am a bit under the weather today, if you know what I mean, so will let the images bear the burden. Maybe I shouldn't have eaten the grasshoppers - but its said that if you eat them, you'll return to Oaxaca. ... read more

Well, okay then. A number of people have asked about food. I will admit to three daily foibles. In the front of Pitico there is a sorbet counter, usually two highschool-aged girls run it. These sirens wait at the edge of the cashier station with teensy plastic spoons on a tray that have tastes of the flavors in stock. They know me now, and know I need no temptation. They don't always have the pistachio and cream that is my weakness, but I'm easily convinced to try something else; tamarindo, grape, 'tuna' (cactus fruit), hibiscus. I stear away from capuccino or chocolate. For some reason they find it funny that I only ever want one flavor, even when I get the size that has a half-dozen scoops. "¡Puro!"and they laugh. So, the other day when there ... read more

In the last few days the pace has slowed considerably. Downloading the 1000+ photographs, attempting to put some sort of order to them, and recuperating a bit. Saturday we tried to visit the Santa Domingo Culturel Center, connected to the church. Many of the groups of people from the zocalo, that were forced out when the police arrived, have relocated there. The Cultural Center was closed. I asked one of the men working there why it was closed. He replied " Security reasons, because of the crowds", not knowing if or when it would reopen. "But," I said, "these people are calm, peaceful." He shrugged his sholders as he hoisted a thick chain through the iron gate, and snapped closed a massive lock, "any minute." I forget what we did after that, but we returned yesterday, ... read more

I'm not sure that I can even begin to cover the last three days, four cemetaries, and over 500 photographs. Perhaps the images will say what I cannot in words. I will do one entry per cemetary. Dispite all indications that it was best to stay off the streets, we walked to the zocalo. There is not a bus in the city, but many 'colectivos', a kind of communal taxi, and gypsy trucks that load people onto their beds, so we walked to the zocalo. Banks have long lines of people waiting to get money, everything having been closed for the last four days, and many ATM's cashless. The PFP is in place, in large numbers, and almost all the graffiti now painted out. We got a cab on the south side of the zocalo, the ... read more

It is designated that on the various days, different souls return for a visit. In some places in Mexico they can stay for as long as a few months. Accidents, suicides, violent deaths, the unbaptized, and lonely souls, pay visits from the 28th- 31st of October. Altars are often set up outside so that they don't wander inside, and hang out, maybe not leave. On the 1st of November, anywhere from noon to three pm, church bells announce the arrival of Los Angelitos, or "little Angles", children who have died. About noon we got to the zocalo. Heading out towards the Panteon General, we passed through the police barricade. On the other side, a group was creating a large tapete right at their feet, with the portrait of Ulises Ruiz and the word 'asesino', murderer. You ... read more
