Tica bus dropped us in Tapachula and we were going to head to Oaxaca but there was some stuff going on there so we headed to San Cristobal. Mexico was surprising. I had always thought that it would be similar to Central America but was pleasantly surprised to find a developed country. San Cristobal was beautiful and Mexican food was a welcome change. We stayed there for about a week and visited an indigenous town for day of the dead and took a day boat trip down the canyon sumidero. It was pretty and we saw some wild spider monkeys. Bus and plane tickets to Mexico City were comparable so we opted to fly out of the Tuxtla airport.... read more

In San Cristobal (a very cute colonial and clean city in the mountains) we found the"Magic Hostel" (recommended by the Lonely Planet) close to the city center. When we arrived we already felt the cold and we were really tired of all the activities of all the previous days and decided to go to bed early. It was quite strange to sleep under two, three thick blankets and wearing our warmest clothes- instead of the thin sheets that were even too much in Palenque, but we slept long...we obviously had a bit of sleep to catch up on. The next day we relaxed in the hammocks at the hostel, reading up on activities, and walked in the city for a bit, but mostly relaxed and had a good time with the other people in the hostel. ... read more

Now for a little something different. I´m just going to put some pics up and tell the stories. Before it was all text, now all pictures, good balance. We are soon to head down to Guatamala. San Cristobol is great. Yesterday we went to a small maya village, chamalu. It was hard to take pictures, because it was native people living as they had for many centuries. The church there was the coolest ever. It had hundreds of candles lit, and pine needles on the floor. Me and Tess just sat no the floor. It was great! So relaxing in there. We went up to the front. There was a lady kneeling there, and a priest in plain clothes was saying something, a prayer over her maybe. Suddenly tess and I heard a Gobble gobble! The ... read more

Well it´s been a while, friends, and I have turned 25. It´s not so bad, after all. I haven´t written a blog for some time because I´ve been messing around putting my pictures up. Where did I leave off last time? My brief playing in Puebla. That was a lot of fun. Check out Tess´s blogs on the subject too: Travelblog.org/bloggers/tess Since then, we went to Palenque, saw the ruins there for my birthday. It is crazy thinking about those times when Mayas ruled. They had an advanced civilization that in some ways puts europeans to shame, however, the europeans managed to dominate the world with imperialism, somehow. How did that work out? Were the europeans more warlike, were they just more cruel and heartless, willing to do anything in the name of their god? I ... read more

Warning! Do not read the following entry...Please skip if you prefer the pretty pictures. I ran across another religion here. I´m not sure of the name, but there are many around here, and they have many different tribes with different customs. It is said they came across the big sea long ago. They believe in a type of god-man who was also a great shaman. He mixed his spit with dirt to make potions for blind people. He performed exorcisms to get rid of evil spirits (but unlike the Chamulans I don´t think he used Pox, but rather just magical encantations and maybe an alcohol drink made from grapes). He used great magic to create alcohol from water and could also divine the future. This god-man told his followers to give away everything they owned to ... read more

¨Leo te,¨ I hesitantly said to the old men sitting beneath the green cross in the plaza in front of the church. The cross looked christian, but hid deeper meanings. The men wore straw hats with different colored ribbons. This indicated that they were elders who oversaw different areas of the community. ¨Leo te,¨ they responded. We weren´t speaking spanish. They seemed surprised that I knew Tzotzil, one of many local mayan dialects, and smiled. In fact, I didn´t know Tzotzil at all, but had just learned a few phrases like hello and how are you earlier from Cesar, our mestizo guide to this mayan town of San Juan Chamula. This week I visited several outlying villages of traditional mayan indians, descendents of the ancient maya...and received quite an education. In Chiapas alone there are perhaps ... read more

If you ever wanted to go to Europe but didn´t want to flit across the Atlantic, then just come to San Cristobal de Las Casas in Chiapas. That´s an exaggeration of course, but it does have the feeling of a smaller colonial-mexican-european city with interesting characters and all the mayans and mestizo locals and german, french, and italian visitors to boot. San Cristobal is in part named after the bishop of this area during the early colonial period named Bartolome de Las Casas. Some of you will be familiar with this rare defender of indian rights against the abuses of the elite ¨landowners¨ and enslavers. It is very different than Palenque just hours away. SC is in Los Altos, or the highlands, so it nice and sunny during the day and cool at night. In the ... read more
