The Sea of Cortez is a great area for whale watching. The whales travel every year from Alaska down to Mexico, they love the Bay of Magdalena as they are a great feeding area. It is a well know calving area too. We drove up to Lopez Mateos to go on a whale watching trip. With memories of aching backs close at hand, we were happy to see that this excursion takes place inside a well protected bay. The panga’s as the boats are called take out 6 people at a time to see the grey whales. It was easy to spot the whales as there were so many. We spent 2 hours following around different whales with their babies. AT times, the boat was almost close enough to touch the backs of these incredible creatures. ... read more

After a day of lying on the beach, Kendra felt well enough to start touring around. The first trip we took was to a beach called Ventana. It’s a know beach for windsurfing and kite boarding. There is a campground right on the beach , full of motor homes . All the people there have canvas “garages” full of sails and boards. All the people there were at least our age or older!!! Brave souls! A doctor we met here told us that kiteboarding is a very dangerous sport, with lots of people being dragged inadvertenly by their kites in a strong wind! I guess it’s not a sport for the faint of heart! (like myself….) Unfortunately, on the day we were there, there was NO wind. One of the view calm days we have had! ... read more

While Mark is busy doing Spanish homework, I will take the opportunity to send a new update. We took a week off from Spanish lessons to tour the country when Kendra came to visit for a week with her boyfriend Scott. We picked them up at the San Jose/Cabo San Lucas airport and stayed for the night to tour the area. The next day, we took a trip out to see the Sea Lions and the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas. It was a great trip- the arch is pretty spectacular, and you can actually see two different bodies of water at one point- the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. We did the tourist thing in Cabo, eating lunch in a small local restaurant, where we practiced our Spanish. Ha! After we had ... read more

After 2 weeks of going to school in La Paz, we were feeling a little overwhelmed with all that you need to know to learn Spanish. My French has been kicking into high gear- and the little that I learned through high school keeps surfacing. I keep trying to say things in French, thinking that it is another language so it must be spanish. Go figure! The first week of classes, the only other student with us was French, not speaking any English. That didn’t help me any! He kept using french words, which just added to my french repertoire. Luckily, the teacher understood both- so between us, we could understand a little bit of each other. Mark on the other hand, would just watch the conversation such as it was, and nod accordingly. ON week ... read more

Here we are in La Paz , Mexico. WE arrived here via cruise ship, on the Celbrity Mercury- coming thru the Panama Canal. It was a great trip, lasting 12 days. We disembarked the ship 2 days early in order to come here to La Paz. The house we've rented is quite nice- much smaller than we had expected, but it' s just fine for us! Especially us boaters! ALl of the rooms exit to a courtyard, and the only connected rooms are the master bedroom and the bathroom. You have to go outside to get to any of the others. THe days are beautiful- sunny and warm, but not too warm. Thenights are cool- perfect for sleeping- but you need a sweater to go outside. The boardwalk here is amazing- you better start practicing your ... read more

La Ventana is a tiny hamlet in the south coast of Baja, 30 miles from La Paz, on the Sea of Cortes side of the peninsula and has become a kite-boarding enclave in the winter months. It is situated on a small bay with long stretch of sandy beach and ideal northernly sideshore wind. The beach is studded with kite school out-fittings, houses for rent and small scale resort like guest houses, catering to kite-boarders mainly and some to wind surfers. The surrounding scenery is spectacular. The beach is surrounded by a thick cactus forest that extends all the way to the near by mountains. The water is clean and clear, and at this time of the year still warm in the 70's. Ok, let's cut thru the chase. Day 1 (kite-boarding on land, 2 hours ... read more

Hello!‏ Here I am reporting from hot, sunny Mexico. On arrival in La Paz just over a week ago, I actually wasn't very well, and had to spend a day in bed sweating off my mysterious illness - nothing life-threatening, luckily!‏ That evening, I met my kayaking group for our briefing and the next day we set off on the speed boat for Isla Espiritu Santo, which is a totally undeveloped, volcanic island 18 miles away from the seaside town of La Paz, on the Baja California peninsula. The plan was to cicumnavigate it in our kayaks, camping on a different beach each night. Luckily, I managed to forget about feeling poorly for most of the time, and in the second half of the week I was almost back to my normal self, albeit with a ... read more

Hi all, here are some photos from my camera that I´ve been unable to upload until now, and some more from Rob´s camera. We are in La Paz for our 2nd night after a 5 hour bus ride from Loreto. We´ve decided to forego travelling 6 hours return to see Cabo San Lucas as it looks very touristy and full of high end hotels and golf courses - not quite on our budget and seems a bit cheesy. Tomorrow morning we catch a bus to the ferry terminal at 5am, ouch. The ferry leaves for Topolobampo on the mainland at 8am and takes 6 hours. I´m really hoping we´ll see some dolphins as it´s the wrong time of year for the blue and grey whales, but even if we don´t I´m sure it will be an ... read more

we are currently sitting in a little cafe in La Paz, sipping Pacificos and listening to late funky mexican pop music. life has been particularly sunny the past few days, a beautiful drive through the desert from el rosario to guerro negro...so many cacti...just everywhere. i´ve spent time in deserts before, but never deserts with so much in them. highway 1 crosses back and forth across the baja, and our first experience with the sea of cortez was in the tiny town of mulege. a beautiful town that hasn´t become as touristy as many of the others in baja...it has an old mexico feel to it. bahia concepcion satiated lindsie´s burning need for beaches (we hadn´t stopped at any till now)...and it was immaculate. we staked out a little palapa (palm shelters that provide the perfect ... read more

We left Calgary at 8am (-32C) and arrived in San Jose del Cabo at 2:30pm (+23C). There was some mis-communication as to which terminal we were arriving in but after a nerve wrecking 2 hour wait, our ride arrived! Off to San Bartolo we were in a truck with 5 others. Set up camp just as the sun was setting, grabbed what was left of some yummy bean burritos, hit the facilities, and we were sitting fire side with our new amigos (about 10 others so far). I am so excited and so happy to be here and happy that the flights went well, all our baggage is here, and we are going to be sharing a month with some really amazing people - so friendly - biggest hugs EVER! Love it! I'm wishing I'd learnt ... read more
