We were offered a swim with sea lions/swim with whale sharks combination tour when we checked into our hotel on Thursday, and we decided to sign up. We left the the next morning around 9:00am for the all-day boat trip. Our companions were: a Stanford/MIT trained energy engineer who was starting a new job in DC where she would work for Africa Power, and who was taking a kite-surfing vacation before her job started. a BC bus driver who was also a kite surfer the parents, sister, brother-in-law, and a family friend of our guide Hugo, the guide the boat captain We motored about 40 minutes to the shores of Espirito Santo, a large nature preserve island off of La Paz, where our first stop was a nesting area for frigate birds. We continued past the ... read more

Ah...the long anticipated ferry ride across the Sea of Cortez... It was great fun, except the waiting in lines! We left about an hour late from Mazatlan, but in plenty of time to watch the sun set from out on the sea... We had to arrive a few hours before departure, and then waited on benches in the shade for about an hour. Next we waited by the baggage truck, and unfortunately didn't check our suitcases, opting to carry them on. Then we waited by the ferry ramp for a safe time to walk on between the semis that were still loading. Then we waited go up to the cabin level. And THEN it got really hard: five flights of narrow, steep stairs carrying a suitcase and wearing a backpack. Then we waited for our room ... read more

Our usual winter!! Left home in October, spent 2 weeks in Mazatlan this year. It is much cooler, less humidity and we could run our air. Huge Bonus!! Flew home for 2 weeks at Christmas. Enjoyed every minute!! A new adventure for us. We had plans to join our friends, Jim and Deb from Kelowna for a week vacation in Jose del Cabo. We had our plans and the night before they were to fly out Deb phoned in tears to say that Jim had to have some heart procedure and could not go on vacation. Poor Deb!! She was in tears. Jim was sick or they were missing their holiday?? Whatever it was a shock for them. We had plans to bus to Guadalajara from LaPenita, spend the night and then proceed to San Jose ... read more

That particular William S. Burroughs quote sticks into me like a thorn. I'm at a crossroads in my life, and I don't know what to do. Weird dreams plague me as of late, vivid I picture a withered man sitting alone in the shadows of a Tangiers cafe in the sweltering stink of the midday. His playful old eyes gleam as I approach. For some reason, he's privy to my destiny. This causes me strong intrigue, so I ask if I can join him and we spend the afternoon chatting about this and that, mesmerized am I by the swirl of his brilliance as it pours from the top of his head like smoke off a corncob pipe. I sip burnt espresso from my minuscule cup with pleasure. Behind him, veiled women drift down the cool ... read more

February 17 – Sunday – La Paz – Its very noisy here at the Pension California. I am at the computer desk in the lobby of the Pension California. Coming out of room 25 to my left is the noise of a TV on Mexican programming at Maximum volume. To my right coming through the front door is Loud Mexican music coming from a place across the street. I have earplugs in, which blocks out some of the noise. Last night till 4 AM I was entertained by the nightclub across the street playing Mexican music at maximum volume as well. The music had to go through the walls of the nightclub, across the street. Through the door and walls of the Hotel and up the hall and through the walls of my room. Not a ... read more

February 16 - Saturday – I kinda took it easy today and just caught up on my blog and then went over to the Mexican Market to buy some avocados and tomatoes. After that I took them to the room and then walked around a bit. I wanted to get something to eat but I guess Mexicans eat out on Saturday because there were lines everywhere I went. I came across a pizza place that wasn’t crowded and went in and got a peperoni and mushroom pizza. The pizza was OK and I ate half of it and took the other half back to the hotel. While I was at the pizza place eating my pizza they had a TV on there with a show about a massive alligator eating people who were at a lake ... read more

Feb 15 – Friday – La Paz – Today I guess I must have slept through the rooster crowing and slept in till 8 AM. I had my usual tea and granola (since Muesli is not available here) and just woke up a bit. I tried once again to get on the internet and got the same old “identifying” message so gave it up after a bit. Bob was taking the bus back to Cabo today around 1:30 and I was meeting the guy at the water’s edge to go on the whale watching tour. So after easing into the day a bit I went back to my room and finished loading up my stuff then told Bob Adios and have a good trip to Cabo. Then I dragged my suitcase up the hill….for there always ... read more

February 14 – La Pax – Today the rooster woke me up at 05:30 crowing outside my window. I got up about 0600 and fixed my tea. It was cold so I dressed quickly and drank my tea. Then I made another cup and took my computer out to the central patio and checked out the Continental breakfast. It was unimpressive so I drank my tea and got some of my own granola from the room to eat. There were 3 young women there speaking German and we did the mutual smiles and nods strangers do and then they returned to their conversation and I to my laptop. Once again my laptop connected to the router but could not identify it and so I had no internet access again. So I just started making up my ... read more

February 13 –Los Cabos to La Paz – Today I got up about 6 and packed up for my trip to La Paz from Los Cabos. Bob and I were planning on taking the Colectivo bus at 8 to the bus station to take the 9:15 bus to La Paz. We got on a Colectivo bus that had Soriano in its list of destinations and I told the driver “El centro autobuses Aguila”. Probably not perfect Spanish but he understood me. When I saw the Golden Palace Office complex just north of the intersection of Miguel Hidalgo and Hwy 19, part of which houses the main bus station for Cabo, I went to the front of the bus and the driver pulled over and let us out at the Pemex Station across the street. The ticket ... read more

Sunday 2/9/12 – We woke up, packed up and made a beeline for the Mexican border that crosses between San Diego and Tijuana. Just before crossing we stopped in to swap some dollars for pesos, and to purchase some Mexican motorcycle insurance. At the border I got stopped by the American border patrol and they opened my panniers looking for something (probably drugs or weapons). We then headed to Mexican immigration to get all our papers organised. We pinballed from office to office getting our passports stamped, tourist permits, and the bikes imported. One of the Mexican customs officers spoke English and loved motorbikes, so he was happy to help and told us what we needed and where to go. It only took about 5 minutes at the border for us to begin regretting not learning ... read more
