Life in La Paz Hola family and friends, Ansa and ECHO are still in La Paz. We left here for points north about a month ago, but some difficulties ensued. We sailed up past Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida. On the way, a school of dolphins crossed our path and decided to play with us. See the dolphin clip. We were at Isla San Francisco when I discovered I couldn't start my engine. The starter was fried. Also my windlass, which I thought I had repaired in La Paz, wasn't working. We had no choice but to return to La Paz for repairs (see TOW clip for ECHO towing Ansa back to La Paz). Week by week something came up to keep us here. The last event was my having a crown fall off, necessitating ... read more

One evening a few years back, my friend Jovan told me about the best kept secret on the Baja. We were sitting around a campfire drinking cheap tequila and eating fish tacos. Jovan has lived in this part of the Baja all of his life, he is a fisherman - same as his father and his father before. It was only until recently, that he, along with the other panga fishermen who ply the waters in this area realized they could make almost triple the pesos in about half the time by taking tourists out to their secret island hideaway for a look-see. The place I'm talking about is called Isla Espíritu Santo in the Sea of Cortez. Actually the entire site is now protected under UNESCO as a biosphere and has remained remarkably unspoiled. The combination of working spring break and being sick has had me stuck on the ship this week. I’ve pretty much just been sleeping or working. Today however, I made it a priority to get off the ship. Otherwise, it will be another nine days before I’ll be on land again - next cruise we’re off to Hawaii! So, after a good sleep in, I got off the ship. We’re docked in La Paz, but the pier is actually quite a distance away from town. Thankfully, free shuttles operate from the pier. I took the one that went to the beach. Compared to the Caribbean beaches I’ve gotten used to seeing, the ones of the West Coast we’ve been going to have been rather underwhelming. Today’s beach was really nice though. The sand was quite rocky ... read more

Since we haven't left La Paz I could write a blog about my cleaning of the bilge or Dave pulling his hair out trying to get his new weather fax working, but I wouldn't even want to see that. So I thought I'd go for a walk on the Malecon and take some pictures. The Malecon is a seawall protecting the city. It runs for about 2.5 to 3 miles along the edge of the bay. When it was built it wasn't to be an ordinary ugly sea wall. It is about 20 feet wide in most places and is set back enough to provide for a beach. The top is tiled in tan and red in a swirling pattern. It is well lit at night and has a lot of palm trees. The city side ... read more

CARNAVAL! Tuesday, February 16 - Today is the last big day for Carnaval parades so Brian and I went into town in the afternoon to run around getting a better visa, and when we were done, we picked out a restaurant on the parade route so we could have a good view and a good dinner. We had Al Pastore, natch. The parade was supposed to start at 5, but it didn't until about 6:30. The nice thing about Mexican restaurants is they never rush you, so after dinner, we kept our primo seats on the parade route. Push carts were going by in the street with all kinds of goodies, so when we saw something interesting we bought it. Brian bought this reddish brown ball that we both thought was some kind of chocolate dusted ... read more

On the way to La Paz A little late on this entry but we've been busy. After Sarah left back to the States, Dave and I stayed in Los Cabos for another week so he could rinse the salt out and we would have a better weather window to get to La Paz. During the delay, we took time out to explore Puerto Los Cabos. We had heard about a cactus garden the developer had made, so we went to look at it. I was a lot larger and more elaborate than I had imagined. The landscape architect was really into repetition and rigid symmetry, as you'll see in the photos. After the cactus garden, we set out to walk to the beach and ran into a security guard on an ATV. We asked him if ... read more

There is no better place to visit in baja than LA PAZ, a bit hot, and himid, but still 1000 times better than Cabo, and you have better beaches in La Paz than you do in Cabo. I visited Pichilingi Beach, and Loalandra Beach it was blue water as far as you could see. The fishing was great, I had a great red snapper at one of the restaurant by the Malecon, visited the central marker which is great if you on a low budget, food is great, and not that expensive, the only bad thing is there are only 2 direct flights to La Paz from out home town airport which is LAX. I flew into Cabo, and drove from there to La paz. I would recommend to visit La Paz.... read more

We arrived at around 10PM, touching down right on time. I was ever so ready for a few days of doing nothing. Two friends were flying down from Seattle on the 29th, and that meant that we had several days to hang out. I put in a lot of time by the pool. A lot of time. It was fantastic. I did very little besides go to the coffee shop, and hang out by the pool. Two other residents invited us over for drinks on Tuesday. Gene and Tina float between Turkey, Taiwan, China and La Paz. It was great to meet them and chat. Other than the trip out to the municipal building to file a police report for the backpacks and the odd errand, I spent the vast majority of the several days before ... read more

The property manager for Justin's parents condo invited the 4 of us to head out and explore the Espiritos Santos Islands off of La Paz. The trip was not cheap, costing about $50 USD. However, it was a lot of fun. Heading over, we attracted the attention of a pod of dolphins, which then proceeded to swim along side the boat and playfully jump right next to us. I enjoyed being right next to (6ft away) the airborne mammals. Exploring some caves by boat were also on the itinerary. As we pulled out of the caves, we saw some 'flying rays' and went out to explore. These were really cool. I had no idea that rays could launch themselves out of the water like that. I had always envisioned 'flying' rays to be swimming along at ... read more

Again some majestic sceneries today. Riding though the Sierra La Giganta, with more than 100 consecutive curves on mountain sides. Pour les bikers du Lac Bowker: traverser la Sierra Giganta (chaine de montagnes) avec sa multitude de courbes est une experience de reve pour motocyclistes. Pour les golfeurs de Quebec, un p'tit 18?
