Hi all, here are some photos from my camera that I´ve been unable to upload until now, and some more from Rob´s camera.
We are in La Paz for our 2nd night after a 5 hour bus ride from Loreto. We´ve decided to forego travelling 6 hours return to see Cabo San Lucas as it looks very touristy and full of high end hotels and golf courses - not quite on our budget and seems a bit cheesy.
Tomorrow morning we catch a bus to the ferry terminal at 5am, ouch. The ferry leaves for Topolobampo on the mainland at 8am and takes 6 hours. I´m really hoping we´ll see some dolphins as it´s the wrong time of year for the blue and grey whales, but even if we don´t I´m sure it will be an interesting and beautiful ferry trip. From Topolobampo it´s a short distance to Los Mochis where we spend 2 nights before boarding the Copper Canyon train. It´s about a 12 hour trip but we´re breaking it into 2 parts and overnighting in Creel, about halfway along the canyon, for 2 nights. Rob´s hoping to do some hiking there. I really don´t think I´m up to
it as I´ve noticed Í get out of breath quite easily and I think my blood pressure has gone up a bit, all fun pregnancy stuff but not a big deal. Still really excited to see the canyon and Creel though. My tummy has developed quite an interesting wobble/jiggle over the past couple of days too that can make negotiating the uneven footpaths a bit of a bumpy ride!
La Paz is OK, just a city really but we are staying in a really awesome hotel, it has more of a hostel vibe to it, very funky. La Paz hasn´t got the charm and beauty of Loreto but it does have a spectacular waterfront.
We ended up staying 3 nights in Loreto as we discovered some more nice beaches. People cruise up and down the ´strip´ with their music blaring just like I imagine they do in Miami or Santa Monica, it´s quite funny.
We saw some more of the wildlife in Loreto: puffer fish, gheckos and hummingbirds! So cool, have never seen hummingbirds before. I managed to photograph one but they are evasive little suckers and they came out blurry and not really worth posting.
We were a
little shocked when watching TV in our room to see that on Spanish Sesame Street, Big Bird isn´t yellow! It´s weird enought that the Dutch one is Blue, but this one was fluoro green with a pink neck, a red face and a short yellow beak. Freaks. No sense of tradition at all...
Now just some random bit and pieces:
1) Arlene, every single place we´ve stayed here has had really small plug holes in the sinks so my universal plug has been useless. But we´ve found that just stuffing a plastic bag in to wash clothes works fine.
2) Excellent movies we have been lucky enough to watch on buses: Cheaper by the Dozen II (TWICE, argh), Big Mama´s House II, Tristan and Isolde (particularly weird to watch Cornwallians speaking in Spanish), Wedding Crashers, Taxi and Air Force II. The last 2 were in English with Spanish subtitles which was pretty cool. Air Force II was absolute crap but it seems to have been filmed in the Waitakeres or similar and was funny to see Robbie Magasiva and Sam the ambulance driver from Shortland St.
3) Rob told me the other day that a guy
offered him weed in Guerrero Negro, and when he declined that, offered him his sister!
4) We thought this comment on a menu in Loreto summed up how friendly most Mexicans have been in Baja very well: ´We don´t speak English very well but we won´t laugh at your Spanish´
5) Forgot to mention that we saw everyone flocking to a big baseball game at the stadium in San Diego. That was a pretty cool slice of American life! LA vs San Diego.
6) My worst toilet experience so far, on the way from Loreto to La Paz yesterday (do not read if easily grossed out): Had to wait for 2 hours until the bus stopped as the one on the bus was locked for the entire trip. Saw that the tap was missing from the sink and one of the toilet cubicles was taped shut. A lady in front of me refused to use the other toilet as it had chunky poo all over the back of the toilet seat, underneath it and on the rim! But I had to go. I pointed at my shewee as she scurried out in the hope that she would
understand I wasn´t planning to sit on the poo, but she probably thought I was a tranny or something. The cubicle had some sort of liquid all over the floor that I stood in with my jandal and hope was just water. There was a bin next to it full of poo-covered toilet paper and the worst part was the big fluffly floating poo in the toilet that just wouldn´t flush. I had to hold the door shut with one hand and shewee with the other which made it really hard to aim, and then to get to the loo paper and hand sanitiser in my bag, all while trying not to breathe or look at any of the poo-covered surfaces. Really, really not cool.
So Kerry, and Elissa - maybe we´ll appreciate the loos at work a bit more now :-)

beautiful photos krista! Loreto looks lovely. And I'm stoked that the shewee is getting such a good workout! I think Mexico beats Mongolia for awesome toilets by the sound of things. infinite love, em.
