During our drive to the campground located on Ile d'Orleans, we passed through Kamouraska. This place has some family history to it. Much of the family history will be found in the next blog with Ile d'Orleans, but this little town played a big part of it for one side of my family. If you clicked on that link for Kamouraska, you will see someone named Charles-Alfred Roy dit Desjardins. He's a relative of ours! He is my third cousin, five times removed....lol. He was a cousin to my third great-grandfather, Pierre Roy dit Desjardins. It was Pierre who was one of the many Desjardins who made the decision to leave their farms and livelihoods in Kamouraska to venture west to begin a new life for he and his family. He went as far as Manitoba ... read more

FRIDAY May 6, 2016 Charney to Cacouna (Levis - Riviere de Loup) The day began well with a good breakfast of clumpy scrambled eggs and bits of fruit lined up around perimeter of plate. All these breakies have too much sugar. Will be cooking for myself soon. The coffeewas delicious and the service was supreme! Driving thru Levis I was astonished to discover how many office towers were dedicated to Desjardins, the credit union and insurance company. “The Desjardins Group is the largest association of credit unions in North America. It was founded in 1900 in Lévis, Quebec by Alphonse Desjardins.” Wikipedia Further what should my eyes behold but a huge Doritos Nacho Truck suspended at an angle …being loaded?, getting rid of outdated bags? or recycling old Doritos into new bags? I will never know ... read more

I made sure to take advantage of the free breakfast and had the most wonderful waffle, juice, coffee and Tom had his usual cereal. Then it was back on the road, I wanted to stay and take one of the whale watching tours but with a cooler full of lobster it was add ice and get going. Very nice drive through Quebec, the Appellation Mountains are very pretty, people were nice, and the toll bridge around Montreal a great idea. But the one thing I found out with every hotel stay they charge a 3 dollar tourist fee. At first I was "what assholes" then I thought no they have it figured out why raise peoples taxes when you add a fee to those who don't live here, why not most people think oh week its ... read more

September 3, 2013 Guitta, our hostess at the Maison Historique James Thompson B&B, fixed a wonderful breakfast for the eight of us staying at her beautiful home in Old Quebec City. Omelets, French toast, croissants, bacon, big bowls of seven different fruits, chocolate muffins, juice, and coffee gave us a good start for another busy day. Guitta is a good person, very hard working and kind. We enjoyed talking with a nice family of four (two adult children) from Paris. We thought it was interesting that the Parisians said that they had difficulty understanding the Canadian French, that it is very "Americanized" with a heavy Canadian accent. They said that when films made in Quebec are shown in France, they often include French subtitles. I can relate...I have had trouble understanding the English language in Belize ... read more

It was the best of trails, it was the worst of trails. There were trails of fine gravel and rest stops, then there were trails destroyed by washouts and abuse. My route from Montreal followed the Route Verte due east towards Sherbrooke, then swung north to Quebec City. This portion of the Trans Canada Trail is a world class bike route that draws thousands of bicyclists of all ages each year, taking advantage of its carefully tended surface and immaculate picnic and rest stops along the way. Although it's not the most direct way of travelling between Montreal and Quebec, many retirees make the 600-odd kilometre journey during the summer, staying in the various Bed & Breakfasts along the way. Much of the trail has been converted from railway, so in addition to being straight and ... read more

(Photos courtesy of Michael Weinstein and John Carson: Many thanks) I sure wish I had been able to keep up better with this blog during the trip. It's so much easier to remember things that happened within a day or two rather than a week later. But our days were so long and I was so exhausted by the end of the day that I couldn't get to it. I would need all the sleep I could get before tackling another day on the trail. During dinner the night before, we all talked about getting an earlier start riding since we had somewhere near 200 miles to get back to Riviere du Loup from Matane. For a change, we had no mechanical issues to deal with and the trails should be well groomed. We started out ... read more

I arrived here in Riviere du Loup around 1:30 PM. It was about a 3-1/2 hour drive from Saint-Raymond, mainly because it was snowing the whole way. We're staying at a very nice hotel called the Hotel Universel. Really nice inside. Accommodations are very roomy and nice. The tour guide, Gary Pruitt, hasn't arrived yet. This place is really set up big time for motoneiges (snowmobiles). They have a fenced in lot for your truck and trailer and garages for your snowmachines. The truck and trailer will stay here for the 6 days we'll be touring the Gaspesie. I talked with 3 guys from the Toronto area and they just finished touring the Gaspe Peninsula and said it was fantastic. They said the scenery is unbelievable, better than their home province of Ontario!! I'm all settled ... read more

The french culture in Quebec is very evident in Riviere where english is little spoken. We had a most enjoyable stay with Carl et Lorraine who recommended a lovely french restaurant to us, overlooking the river which is 23km wide at this point. The next day we visited a Christmas museum that included nativity scenes from 24 countries and the biggest Xmas store in Canada. Then we drove along the river, enjoying several small villages including the town of Saint Jean Paul Joli, where there was a red roofed church dating back to 1779 and the Musee de Ancien Canadians, a museum dedicated to many skilled wood carvers located in the district. A fog or long white cloud was present over the river for the entire day.... read more

AHHHH lalala. ... read more
