Left Watertown,NY at 10AM and arrived at the Canadian border around 10:30. Drove past the 1000 island region and very pretty. Would like to come back and spend more time. Arrived in Quebec around noon and plenty of crazy drivers and saw quite a few accidents. Arrived at our hotel outside Quebec City around 4 and had a nice dinner at the Auberge La Camarine (sounds pretty fancy but we sat outside on a deck). Feels pretty strange with all signs in French, but enough people speak English for us to get by. Alot less humid up here but the locals are complaining of the hot weather. There's a firework display a mile up the road at 10PM and we have an excellent view from our hotel window. Alot of people on the road heading to ... read more

We had a difficult day yesterday and an inauspicious start to our time here in Montréal, but fortunately everything turned out fine. Our last evening out in Québec City, Wednesday night, was spent at the Moulin à Images, or Image Mill. This is a pretty slick multimedia 3-D slideshow. What makes it special is that the slides are projected onto the massive grain silos north of downtown – 600 meters wide and 30 meters tall, and the spectators are facing the silos from across the Bassin Louise, a marina. The slideshow reveals the history of Québec from before European explorers to the present day. Like the Cirque du Soleil, it’s free. You just show up with your blanket and find a place to sit, and there are speakers along the marina that play the accompanying music. ... read more

As usual, we were up fairly early for tourism activities - our biking schedule is not really in line with the rest of the world. We started the day off with some breakfast in our tiny residence room, scoped out the laundry facilities for later, taped up the blisters on Eric's feet, and headed to the bus stop. We took the bus to just outside of Old Quebec City, and walked the rest of the way in. There were some steep hills on that walk, but overall it was still enjoyable. Just before entering the fortifying walls of the old city, we stopped at a little cafe for some more breakfast - it was about 10 am by this point. On our way in to the city we attempted to take a picture, and promptly realized ... read more

Today was another long day of biking, but we have arrived in Quebec City, and are staying in the residences at the Universite Laval. Have you noticed a trend in our choices of accommodations? Like in Trois Rivieres, the residences here are really cheap (about $70 per night), but they are not nearly as nice, or as big. Actually, the room we're in seems to be a single residence room where they have added in an extra roll-out bed, but for the price and location, we're still happy with the choice. We even managed to fit our bikes in the room instead of using the special bike lock-up, though its a tight squeeze. This morning had a bit of a slow start. Trois Rivieres started to seem like Hotel California - you can check out any ... read more

It has been a while since we last posted; looking back at where we left off seems like ages ago. We spent two lovely nights just outside of Montreal, and spent a day taking in the sights of Old Montreal. The weather was incredible, hot and humid and the afternoon was filled with warm showers. We got a little wet, but thankfully we are not made of sugar and didn’t melt. Old Montreal has lots to offer both for the stomach and for the eyes. The area is shockingly European, with cobblestone streets and narrow and winding roads. The street life is active and abundant, with cafés and tables lining the street sides. We first took in the Notre-Dame Basilica, what a beautiful building! It is one of the largest churches in North America and is ... read more

In spite of the forecast calling for rain today, we decided to head down the St. Lawrence to the beautiful Chute Montmorency. Chute is French for fall (think: parachute), and these falls are higher than Niagara (the Quebecois won't let you not notice that...) but not as wide. The falls are on the Montmorency River, probably about a mile before it flows into the St. Lawrence. It is a lovely waterfall, and we climbed the stairs to the top, walked across the bridge that spans the top of the fall, and had a nice lunch at the Manoir Montmorency. I think our collective opinion was that while this waterfall was quite huge, it wasn't nearly as impressive as some we've seen in Yosemite. It was definitely worth visiting, and the mist at the bottom was so ... read more

After a prolonged and protracted journey, we arrived in Québec City late yesterday afternoon. Two uneventful flights brought us to Washington, DC, where we learned that the third leg of our cross-country travel had been cancelled. Many thanks to modern technology, though, we were able to reschedule our flight for the following day, make a hotel reservation, notify our hosts in Québec City, and change our rental car arrangements, all while we stood waiting in line. It was pretty sweet to be able to get out of line and go on our way, without so much as a wave to the grumpy United Airlines workers. And so we were forced to spend one night in Reston, Virginia, where the girls logged a new state and saw their first-ever fireflies, and we all decided that we should ... read more

Geo: 46.8266, -71.3024 Up Saturday morning and out the door. We started at the Museum fo the Fort.It had a multi media show about the French and British battle for Quebec. In the 1770's. Btitain won. Then on to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. This is an Anglican church in Quebec. While we were deciding what else to do, we noticed that the streets were blocked off near us. They were having a bicycle race today. We waited around for a while and soon here came about 150 riders powering up the hill. The did nine laps around old Quebec. We then walked to the Battlefield Park Discovery Museum. It had a show about the main battles for Quebec. On our walk back home we passed the old Quebec jail. They were having tours of ... read more
