And so another trip begins. It took not much time at all to cram bikes and gear into the car (well, at least to cram my stuff - the heavy lifting had already been done by the time Linda and Dave arrived at my place). Mind you, we did have to stop just outside Ottawa to secure the bike rack itself, which seemed in danger of falling off the car and taking my bike with it. Unlike last year where we encountered heavy rain just outside Montreal, this time it poured all the way from Ottawa. OTOH whereas in 2013 we hit lots of traffic and lineups at the airport, this time there were no crowds and check-in was quite relaxed ... read more

We left Fort Pierce about three weeks ago. Caribee's rudder was fixed and re-attached, the keel was sanded and repainted as was the saildrive and the prop, the antifouling was redone all over and the anodes all replaced. We got to our slip in Harbortown Marina and started the summerizing. This took close to a week. We stored our linens and clothes properly in sealed bags, we covered the windows, we added more water trapping sacks and we added an air conditioner. We are sure that this time we won't come back to mold and humidity- fingers crossed! When we got back to Montreal we were able to stay in the downstairs unit of our home, it was not rented until June 1st. We got right to the task of sorting through our personal things in ... read more

Our quick little trip back home has ended up being longer than a month. We have had some good times and bad times in this last month, and we have resolved some issues and closed some chapters in our life. While we were sick we had some time to reflect on things and go over our goals and plans. We have reassured ourselves of what we want to do here in Montreal for now and for the future. All that remains now is to learn where Caribee will finally fit in all of this. We have decided that even though a rest in the Bahamas along with all the practice that would go with it sounds great right now, we really want to get to Anguilla instead this spring. We need to get the boat there, ... read more

What a change in weather! This winter has been a terrible one all over I think: I have heard about ridiculous amounts of snow and the coldest days in almost 20 years from family in Montreal, record breaking cold in Toronto, terrible storms in the maritimes, horrific wind chills across the prairies, crazy low temperatures all over USA and even non stop rain for weeks in Mexico. It seems that in North America only Florida has had any semblance of normal weather in the last month or so, and even Florida saw some really cold days and more storms compared with what is normal for them. We are lucky to have been in Florida this past little while! Just as the weather dipped down again in Fort Pierce last week we hopped in the car and ... read more

OK! I understand now what they were referring to when they mentioned an ... read more

Had a lazy start to the day - Geoff said he couldn't get his legs moving...I didn't want to admit it but I felt the same. We had our complementary breakfast at the hotel - the breakfast room was down in the basement of the hotel. It's a strange feeling being down in the basements in some of these places. It's something we are not used to in Australia. The hotel has many hallways, ramps and steps that lead all over the place. I can't tell you how many times we got lost when we were looking for the laundry. It was ridiculous - we had to ask the receptionist several times for directions....well our excuse is that laundry in French is not spelt anything like it is in English. Buanderie - who would guess that ... read more

We have not written in a while. This has been the busiest summer I can ever remember. I think the last I wrote it was June and we were thinking we would be leaving Calgary soon to come to Montreal for the rest of the summer. I think our Canadian friends know what went wrong, but for the rest of you: Calgary, Alberta and other neighbouring cities along the river were badly flooded not long after my last blog. Very badly. As in what was probably Canada's worst disaster in history to date. Toronto, Ontario also flooded very badly, maybe not worse in volume of water per house but I think worse in dollar value of damage. Alberta had many more hail storms as well. The work just kept coming. Although it has been an exhausting ... read more

Beautiful sunny warm day here in Montreal - fantastic weather for Thanks Giving Weekend. Had a good breakfast down in the foyer of the hotel. The receptionist told us she got robbed last night as she was walking down the Main Street. Someone grabbed her handbag and took off. Nobody helped her and you could see she was distressed about the incident - and the police were not interested about it one bit! So here I was thinking that Montreal felt like a very safe city - but I guess it's no different to anywhere you travel -Geoff went and checked on our rental car - all good - sigh of relief! Then she tells us that 3 weeks ago a 72 year old lady was stabbed to death outside the IGA - that's it we ... read more
