Well the last week has certainly been a busy one as we seem to have been moving around a fair bit. We started our move across to the east side of Canada, after leaving Lake Louise, Banff, on Monday the 13th, and after a 4 hour coach journey on the Greyhound bus we arrived in Calgary later that evening. Calgary itself is a fairly large city, famous of course for the Stampeed which occurs every July, however because we turned up in May there wasnt a whole lot happening and there's not much else to see really. We had only planed on staying at the hostel there for one night as we were just there to catch a plane out of Calgary airport heading to Toronto on wendesday (we planed to stay at the airport the ... read more

Hi Everyone! Welcome to our travel blog! Mike and I will post here throughout our trip and give you the lowdown on what we've been up to. We are still working out all the details of our travels, but here's the "3,000 ft" plan: May 29 - June 12: Bolivia (La Paz, Uyuni Salt Flats) June 13 - June 29: Peru (Machu Piccu, Lima, Iquitos for Amazon rainforest) June 30 - July 10: Ecuador (Quito, Mindo cloud forest, beaches at Canoa) July 11 - July 29: Colombia (Bogota, Coffee Plantations, Cartagena, beaches) In the meantime, in addition to wrapping up things professionally at work and personally in Toronto, we have been preparing other ways - vaccinations (see attached pic). Stay tuned - I assure you the posts will get more interesting! Mike and Jess (street cred ... read more

Well, this is the first blog post of hopefully many.. About a month ago, I left my corporate middle-management marketing job. I was ultimately over-worked, over-stressed and burned out. After 9 years busting my ass at the same company, I was tired. My personal life was nearly non-existent. (A large section of text on the realities of my work life-situation has been redacted)... As my tolerance and job satisfaction were dwindling, my father mentioned to me that I could always just take time off and not go right into finding another job. The prospect of no income had never occurred to me. I loved to travel, and every year saved up every single vacation day to take a big trip abroad. But it was always rushed and never enough. I had been in school/working or just ... read more

hello friends, i am sitting at a comupter station inside Shawn's parents house in a city called Thornhill in Markham outside Toronto. Nice drive but long. We drove it in two days. a little tired. we stayed in Sault Ste. Marie last night at the Algonquin Hotel. Two bands were playing at the bars that night. i enjoyed the music from the room until late in the night! but i did manage to get some sleep. the next morning i woke before sunrise to watch the sun come out over the horizon, the water all aglimmer. there was a large barge coming up the river tooting its low deep horn. near the shore were ducks that i could observe frolicking in the water and getting their morning meal. some ice flows near the shore were interstingly ... read more

Welcome! As many of you know, Steve and I have been planning our 3 month trip to Africa for a long time. Steve looked at me with some disdain when I suggested he make an Africa or Bust poster at our airport cafeteria table. Thankfully he's a good sport, and the french fry eating girl next to us snapped our pic. I thought about asking her a french fry, but decided against it. Geo: 43.6485, -79.3854Landing in at Pearson airport was a bit sad. It was nice to be home (although I'm not sure it feels like home anymore), but the screeching tires on the tarmac marked the official end to Part 1 of our world tour. We're going to try to stabilize the Canadian government by paying our taxes for the last couple of years, catch up with friends who long ago routed all of our emails to their spam filter (DH who??), and hit the nearest gym to see if we can rediscover well hidden six packs. That said, it does feel like the adventure is over (at least temporarily). It seems a good time to look back over the last couple of years with misty eyes and to try and list some of the highlights:The Top ... read more

Ik kwam enkele raampjes ... read more
